Can somebody explain the significance of the Police statement.
Why does the fact Cummings self-isolated in Durham help, he shouldn't have traveled at all. To me this seems like gaslighting. We're angry because he travelled when others were told not to. The Police stuff is just secondary.3 -

Maybe the abdication scene from Richard II is being re-enacted behind the scenes.0

Worth noting that nowhere in that statement does it say that the police were told that Cummings, wife and child had come from London to self-isolate.Richard_Nabavi said:
Could have been perfectly routine stuff about window locks etc.Chris said:
What do people think this stuff about "security issues" is? Concern that word had got out that Cummings was there, and what to do if the press got wind of it?CarlottaVance said:
The police came to our property to speak to a representative of the owner to find out if he was breaching the rules on holiday lets. They left when they were told that this was a long-term tenancy. They did not ask where we had been beforehand.
It is possible that re the Cummings family and their interactions with the police the question of travel to the property did not arise at all.0 -
"I told the Prime Minister what I did and he's asked me to reiterate this directly to you". Wow, it really is Fuck You I won't do what you tell me0

The fact that they 'offered no specific advice' and decided that 'no further action was required' suggests they were quite happy with the explanation from Cummings Snr.CorrectHorseBattery said:Can somebody explain the significance of the Police statement.

He’s trying to explain himself. Almost certainly not resigning.0

No. I have said that it was arguable as to whether he breached the regulations as opposed to not complying with the guidance.squareroot2 said:
You were hinting at his guilt.Cyclefree said:
I have never claimed to be. I note though that there has been obfuscation around this aspect of the story.squareroot2 said:
So what. You are not judge nor jury..Cyclefree said:
His car - or one he uses - was verified as having been there.squareroot2 said:
You dont know that. Afaik it us only an allegation.Cyclefree said:There are many fine things to see in or near Barnard Castle: the castle itself, the Bowes Museum, Egglestone Abbey, Raby Castle etc. Unfortunately all closed.
So why was Cummings there?
This is potentially more significant, for 2 reasons:-
1. There may well have been a reasonable excuse for the initial dash up home with sick family.
2. But a wander around town some time later? What was the reason for that? No firm denial and no clear explanation either. He may well not have been doing anything criminal at all but doing something which, for whatever reason, the government does not want us to know about.
I am curious as to whether that might be what is happening here and why Boris is putting so much effort into fighting for his advisor. I am also curious about what this “something” might be and why it is being kept secret.
Of course I may be wrong.
I simply note the coincidence of there being a GSK plant at Barnard Castle, GSK’s public statements about the work they are doing on developing a vaccine and the fact that Sir Patrick Vallance, the government’s CSO, was a former president of R&D at GSK between 2012 - 2018.
Were there - possibly - meetings going on which for some reason the government does not want to admit to? If so, why?0 -

It doesn’t deal with the question of travel to the property at all. And it is the travel which is the issue under the regulations.MikeL said:BBC Daniel Sandford saying Durham police statement helpful to Govt.
Whatever happens now, the government has been wounded. How much and how long for is another question.0 -
This doesn't sound very convincing.

Already admitted one breach of quarantine.0
-
Claiming Boris didn't know then.0
-
But he's already admitted he broke the rules...0
-
None of this is new and none of this exculpates him. Literally thousands of people have bene through this and had to stay put. He genuinely seems to think his judgement overrides the rules.0
-
Dom doing much, much better than Boris did yesterday.
I almost believe him.1 -
Amazing how this story didn't get out before given his family ended up in hospital.0
-
I can't help but think this shows an unbelievable level of arrogance.
What is unique about his situation?0 -
This is all boo hoo look at me. Millions of people have had to deal with this.0
-
I'm afraid he's broken quarantine clear as the sun rises in the east.0

His wife and son did, he entered hospital at no point.FrancisUrquhart said:Amazing how this story didn't get out before given his family ended up in hospital.

My Tory wife keeps saying 'what a load of bollocks'!0
-
I have sympathy for him and the situation his son has been in, I really do.
But I just don't think that excludes him.0 -
So they made a non-essential journey to Barnard Castle. Fascinating.0
-
It's very honest but he's certainly broken quarantine.0

TBH it's the first time heard him speak.Mexicanpete said:Dom doing much, much better than Boris did yesterday.

So they did go for a walk in the woods.0
-
So he went to Barnard Castle but only for the drive.0
-
Now he’s admitting visiting Barnard Castle while still ill.
This is a disaster, what the fuck is he thinking?0 -
He has sabotaged himself...0

It was just to see if he could see properly!Gallowgate said:So they made a non-essential journey to Barnard Castle. Fascinating.

I could claim this level of isolation on any of my runs. This is all fine for isolation, but not quarantine ><0
-
He did not return and he can prove it is false
Not looking good for the Guardian and Mirror2 -
So the kid doesn't need a piss for 5 hours on A1, but did need a piss after a quick run down to Barnard Castle.
Crock of shit.0 -

This explanation would have worked if it had been given immediately along with a bit of contrition, perhaps.6
-
If he had stepped down, given this statement, he would have been back in 3-6 months, and probably got a fair bit of sympathy and Boris would have looked good for sticking to the rules being the same for everybody.Richard_Nabavi said:This explanation would have worked if it had been given immediately along with a bit of contrition, perhaps.

"I respectfully disagree"
Okay Dom I wish I had an estate I could drive to0 -
Now he’s accusing his mother of lying.
Good grief.
This is a disaster.
Yes, many people say you should have stayed at home. Starting with the government’s own guidance.0 -
He's coming across as terribly reasonable.3

He's broken quarantine. Undoubtedly.Richard_Nabavi said:This explanation would have worked if it had been given immediately along with a bit of contrition, perhaps.

He'll keep his job but this will not repair any damage done already to the Govt.0
-
He's admitted to multiple breaches of law and guidance, so far as I can see. As you say, if he'd been contrite and explained the extenuating circumstances, he might have been forgiven.Richard_Nabavi said:This explanation would have worked if it had been given immediately along with a bit of contrition, perhaps.
As things stand, he's damaged the government hugely.0 -
If he’s prosecuted, he’d better hope this ain’t played in court. That comment on accountability would send a jury round the twist.AlastairMeeks said:
