It looks like that Dom now has stronger story to back him no?

Can somebody explain the significance of the Police statement.

Why does the fact Cummings self-isolated in Durham help, he shouldn't have traveled at all. To me this seems like gaslighting. We're angry because he travelled when others were told not to. The Police stuff is just secondary.

What do people think this stuff about "security issues" is? Concern that word had got out that Cummings was there, and what to do if the press got wind of it?
Could have been perfectly routine stuff about window locks etc.
Worth noting that nowhere in that statement does it say that the police were told that Cummings, wife and child had come from London to self-isolate.

The police came to our property to speak to a representative of the owner to find out if he was breaching the rules on holiday lets. They left when they were told that this was a long-term tenancy. They did not ask where we had been beforehand.

It is possible that re the Cummings family and their interactions with the police the question of travel to the property did not arise at all.

The fact that they 'offered no specific advice' and decided that 'no further action was required' suggests they were quite happy with the explanation from Cummings Snr.

There are many fine things to see in or near Barnard Castle: the castle itself, the Bowes Museum, Egglestone Abbey, Raby Castle etc. Unfortunately all closed.

    So why was Cummings there?

You dont know that. Afaik it us only an allegation.
His car - or one he uses - was verified as having been there.
So what. You are not judge nor jury..
I have never claimed to be. I note though that there has been obfuscation around this aspect of the story.

This is potentially more significant, for 2 reasons:-

    1. There may well have been a reasonable excuse for the initial dash up home with sick family.
    2. But a wander around town some time later? What was the reason for that? No firm denial and no clear explanation either. He may well not have been doing anything criminal at all but doing something which, for whatever reason, the government does not want us to know about.

I am curious as to whether that might be what is happening here and why Boris is putting so much effort into fighting for his advisor. I am also curious about what this “something” might be and why it is being kept secret.

Of course I may be wrong.

I simply note the coincidence of there being a GSK plant at Barnard Castle, GSK’s public statements about the work they are doing on developing a vaccine and the fact that Sir Patrick Vallance, the government’s CSO, was a former president of R&D at GSK between 2012 - 2018.

Were there - possibly - meetings going on which for some reason the government does not want to admit to? If so, why?
You were hinting at his guilt.
No. I have said that it was arguable as to whether he breached the regulations as opposed to not complying with the guidance.

This explanation would have worked if it had been given immediately along with a bit of contrition, perhaps.

If he had stepped down, given this statement, he would have been back in 3-6 months, and probably got a fair bit of sympathy and Boris would have looked good for sticking to the rules being the same for everybody.

He's admitted to multiple breaches of law and guidance, so far as I can see. As you say, if he'd been contrite and explained the extenuating circumstances, he might have been forgiven.

As things stand, he's damaged the government hugely.
