A group of senior Tories have been holding discussions + have decided the following: the sacking of @KwasiKwarteng will prompt them to come out publicly next week + call on @trussliz to resign. My source: “These are serious people. The PM will find it difficult to survive.”

Liz Truss has nothing to commend her as Prime Minister.

    Nothing.

Just get gone, lass. You'll never be remotely happy while you are in Downing Street.

Remember - this is number of times markets forced a change in PM in Greece since 2009 debt crisis

    Papandreou
    Papademos
    Samaras
    Pikrammenos
    Tsipras
    Thanou
    Tsipras again
    Mitsotakis

    In Italy

    Berlusconi
    Monti
    Letta

Of course @trussliz isn't safe. This is the start, not the end

There is no argument for sacking Kwarteng that doesn't equally apply to the Prime Minister.

The buck stops in 10, Downing Street, not 11.
  • I've never understood the appeal of Jeremy Hunt, except that he sort of looks the part. He also has a paternalistic authoritarian streak and always argued for longer and harder lockdowns, and various other nanny state meddling.

He argued for less drastic action on covid sooner. If the UK had done that instead of futzing around for 2 weeks making up theories about how maybe it wasn't very dangerous and you should just let everyone get it they may not even have needed the lockdowns.

I think that Truss will stay PM for as long as she can, she seems to be have little self awareness about how terrible the situation is for her. She could go on for quite some time if the chancellor is effectively running the whole show. The appointment of someone like Hunt to chancellor could change everything, in this respect. And it is hard to see the polls getting worse for the tories, they are more likely to improve.

The question is do the Tory MPs act? I suspect when it comes down to it they won't be able to agree on a successor and there are MP's who will throw a spanner in the works on any coronation - this could be either from the Boris Johnson loyalist wing or the Suella Braverman/ERG wing.

Just because the tories need to remove Truss doesn't mean it will actually happen.

If only Keir Starmer could make that point, and as succinctly as you do.
My feeling is Truss will limp on for at least 10 days, possibly longer. But anything could happen. Interesting that there are now two former foreign secretaries in Nos 10 and 11. When did that last happen?

Yeah, it's all over. Think they will move against her next week and try to have a coronation of Sunak. The question is will the ERG and Tory members let it happen? Or will they find another candidate to challenge? Maybe Penny or Kemi?

If they do have a coronation of Sunak after he was rejected by the membership it's not totally impossible the party could split... In which case another winter crisis election could rapidly start to become likely?

Hold on to your hats it's gonna be a bumpy few weeks...

Not sure why Hunt is taking the job. Does he want to be tied to Liz Truss? Not sure it will do his re-election chances any good. Or maybe he knows he's toast and just wants a big job on his CV for his future career.

That's an Interesting angle. If the centre/left aren't prepared to let it go to the members, she doesn't have to satisfy the majority of the party. She just has to make sure her opponents are in two mutually antagonistic camps so they can't get together around a unity candidate. That shouldn't be too hard since they're predisposed to feuding.
  • Also got matched on Truss 2025 or later @ 46. That is just as silly a price as the 7 was for 2022, not impossible to reach 25 without a GE.

It's possible surely? I mean otherwise the MPs have to just decide themselves.

British politics has got the feeling of the 1988 England cricket team about it: four captains in one summer, followed by a thrashing the next year and 16 years in the wilderness, despite a huge triumph in the Ashes only two years earlier. (Boris plays Mike Gatting naturally)

    Nelson's view this morning:

"Of course, there could be an even worse option: that Ms Truss caves, gives up on her agenda, increases taxes and then just staggers on anyway. In doing so she’d become pointless, an emblem of a Conservative Party drained of ideas and personnel, unable to enact its own agenda and regarding its principles as politically unsellable."

He'll be announced shortly at Liz Truss's press conference https://twitter.com/Steven_Swinford/status/1580890171213766656

    Don't understand this decision.
He’s comptent, which is what the country needs.

You don’t last as Health Secretary for six years without having competence, nous, and steel.

My God. She has to go; we literally have an imbecile as PM.

I think the signature reads "Diz Lust". Or maybe "Liz Dust". Or something like that. Does it really make much difference?

No that’s the style of Downing Street letters I think. Addressee at bottom.

Ah, indeed -see e.g. Johnson's to Sunak:
    https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/rishi-sunaks-resignation-letter-and-the-prime-ministers-response

I'd never noticed that before. Looks odd (hasn't in the past normally appeared right under the signature, I think, which is why I noticed it this time)

What The Actual Fuck is she doing writing that letter?
    1. "We share the same vision" - so having sacked him you say you remain handcuffed to him and the ideas you had to sack him for
    2. "I deeply respect the decision you have made today" - she *sacked* him. What decision - to not go down fighting?
    3. "I know you will continue to support the mission" which is such a disaster that she has just sacked both the Chancellor and the Chief Secretary

She has completely fucked this. You sack both senior ministers in the Treasury when you are blaming them for a disaster, not because you still back them and the policies.
She isn’t cut out for this job.

I'm guessing the list of those who would take the job while she's still in office is pretty short.
And Hunt was the least incredible.

I don't think it saves her.

I've never understood the appeal of Jeremy Hunt, except that he sort of looks the part. He also has a paternalistic authoritarian streak and always argued for longer and harder lockdowns, and various other nanny state meddling.

He doesn't look the part at all; all he has to commend him is that when I met him at a party nearly 20 years ago he could keep up with my drinking
Unless you're Leon's latest incarnation, that doesn't tell us much.
Oh I can drink! I was on martinis.

About two hours in I asked I what he did for a living. Oh I'm in the Shadow Cabinet he said. Oops

One irony of Brexit is that its made our politics more European. We appear to have become Italy.

At least it means that the people in charge can be replaced. As we have seen.

Agreed. Unless Hunt's going to use his platform as Chancellor to call on Truss to resign, I don't really see why Hunt would tie himself to a dying government like this.
Zahawi being the recent precedent for doing exactly that.
Exactly, would be wild if it happened twice! I have revised my assessment slightly. Essentially being PM in all but name, throwing the mask (or human shield) in the bin at the best opportunity and assuming the role yourself when it suits, is probably not a bad position to be in.

Either way, he's behind her as Sir Humphrey might note.

Has Truss signed off her letter to Kwarteng as..err.. Kwarteng himself?

    https://twitter.com/shippersunbound/status/1580901215722143744?s=46&t=s_ViaGSYR4mS1xWYRHGmAw

Am genuinely howling laughing here. I know that sometimes No10 writes both letters. But FFS don't forget to change the name on the bottom. What a fucking brilliant effort they have made
I wonder if it was deliberate.

    me
I can see 2023, but surely in the next 10 weeks is just too short
If there's a leadership contest, presumably that stretches things out until Christmas.
There can't possibly be a leadership contest
The contest is responsible for this in a way. Truss spent the summer performing for the activists, rolling out the phrases and sentiments they love to hear, basking in the warm glow of it, and she mistook that bubble for the real world, entered number 10 all pumped up and under the impression she was a winner with great ideas, that to know her was to love her and the country would soon come to see what the Tory members saw. Not a good prep for the job of PM at a challenging complex time. Should never happen again.

The letter would have almost certainly been written by an advisor or civil servant; someone made an embarrassing error.
"Just sign it, Kwasi. I'll do the rest."

"Oh - on second thoughts, don't bother even to sign it. Trust me to take care of everything."

Not an unforeseen irony, but an obvious inevitability given the disparate Brexit coalition and the lies that were sold.

    Oh hello, more incoming:

NASUWT TO BALLOT MEMBERS FOR INDUSTRIAL ACTION OVER PAY

The NASUWT-The Teachers’ Union is today announcing it will be balloting its members for industrial action over the failure by Government and employers to guarantee teachers and headteachers a fully-funded real-terms pay award of 12%.

The NASUWT is recommending that members vote Yes to taking strike action and Yes to support action short of strike action.

Today’s announcement comes after Ministers failed to engage in negotiations with the NASUWT, despite repeated calls to do so.

Ballot papers will be issued to members from 27 October and the ballot will close on 9 January with the result to be announced immediately.

The NASUWT’s campaign for a 12% pay award for teachers will include ballots of members in schools and sixth form colleges in England, Scotland and Wales.

Dr Patrick Roach, NASUWT General Secretary said:

“The NASUWT has done everything possible to seek a resolution to this dispute and to avoid escalation of industrial action in schools and colleges.

“The Government has failed to recognise the damaging impact of years of real terms pay cuts on the morale of teachers and which is fuelling the teacher recruitment and retention crisis.

“The 5% pay award for teachers and headteachers is unacceptable at a time when inflation is running at more than 10% and it will result in even more financial misery for hard working teachers.

“The Government must ensure additional money is provided to schools and colleges to ensure that this year’s pay award does not become a lottery for teachers.

“Teaching is at the bottom of the graduate pay league table. Teachers need and deserve a fully funded pay award which will begin the process of restoring the real terms value of teachers’ pay.

“Ministers will be entirely responsible for industrial action unless they act immediately to deliver a better pay deal for teachers.”

    ENDS

If MPs (correctly) decide that it's a matter of self preservation, then some of the factional division becomes irrelevant.

If they haven't worked that out now, then they might as well go down with her at the next election.

Certainly puts him right back in the game.

One might say in 'the thick of it' even.
