You have to hand it to the ERG, they backed a Remainer, Truss over a Leaver, Sunak and ignored those who wanted to back Leaver Badenoch.

They now have a Remainer as PM and Remainer Hunt as Chancellor, Boris' opponent from 2019 of course and a staunch May loyalist.

One can't help but laugh at Mark Francois who is responsible for this!

There is only one person responsible and that is your toxic hero Johnson
No. Boris won the Tories this majority and ERG backers like Baker turning on him and Francois then ordering the ERG to back Truss has meant they have now seen a Leaver PM and Leaver Chancellor in Boris and Sunak replaced by Remainer Truss as PM and Remainer Hunt as Chancellor.

This now looks more like it could be more like the old May government than the Boris government
Boris toxic and irresponsible behaviour led us to today

And by the way you voted remain

Unless I'm being daft, the sign off line is from Kwarteng 'The Right Honourable Kwasi Kwarteng MP' (no idea about the actual signature). 'Senior moment' from whoever did the actual typing up at No 10?
No that’s the style of Downing Street letters I think. Addressee at bottom.

Ah, indeed -see e.g. Johnson's to Sunak:
    https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/rishi-sunaks-resignation-letter-and-the-prime-ministers-response

I'd never noticed that before. Looks odd (hasn't in the past normally appeared right under the signature, I think, which is why I noticed it this time)
Shhhh, don't let facts get in the way of The Narrative.

The funniest thing would be for Liz Truss, knowing her game's up, to say to herself 'fuck it', go to the Palace and call a General Election.

What would tory MPs be able to do about it?

Tell the King that her replacement has the Confidence of the Commons and can have a majority government.
The only way that doesn't work is if the Truss loyalists are determined to rally round her and crash the Parliament.

No idea how many there might be.

Any other parties that don't want an election right now to help with the numbers? DUP?

According to the Washington Post, the real boss of Number 10 is doing his job, quite well: " A London fox is just the latest to learn what many animals in central London already know: Don’t mess with Larry the Cat.

Larry, Downing Street’s “chief mouser,” made headlines in Britain this week when he chased off a fox prowling on his turf."
    source: https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/10/14/larry-cat-downing-street-fox/

I suppose Larry isn't qualified to be Prime Minister, but perhaps he can be even more of a power behind the scenes. And, were I a British citizen, I would take some pride in this competent civil servant.

At least Boris could organise a piss up and didnt even need the brewery.
For me this removes any last vestige of missing him. The one and only plus was he could be "entertaining" - well I'm sorry but this from Truss is entertainment par excellence. There'll be a blockbuster movie and maybe some oscars if they cast it well. Johnson was a great big tedious yawn of a bore by comparison.
    Who would play Truss ?

Has Liz played a blinder here? It's surely cemented in the public's mind that silly old Kwasi was responsible for the mayhem; Liz has simply done the sensible thing - remove her errant prodigy for the national good (albeit with a heavy heart) and install the striding messiah of Hunt. Liz revived!

    Council by-elections, 13th October

    Con GAIN from Green
    Con hold
    Lab hold
    Con GAIN from Lab
    Lab hold

    Good Week/Bad Week Index

    Con +65
    Grn +50
    LDm +48
    Lab +5

    Adjusted Seat Value

    Con +1.1
    Grn +0.8
    LDm +0.8
    Lab +0.1

Cons: The Epping Forest result is a bit of a headliner, but in the round it's a win in a very safe Con ward that was serendipitously won by the Green on one occasion, so there's not much value for the Cons there. All the positive value for them comes from Leicester, with a very small negative in Gloucester.
Lab: A bad loss in Leicester, but offset by reasonable result in Hartlepool and a mildly good one in Stockport.
LDm: pretty positive scores in Stockport and Gloucester
Grn: Although they lost the Epping Forest seat, because of the same factors that downplay the Con win they get a somewhat positive score, about the same as the score in Leicester.

Surely not? What about The Narrative?

Hunt is of course now unsackable, holds the purse strings, and is by a country mile the most experienced minister in the government. He's also ruthless, tough, and someone who really masters detail. The PM, in contrast, is the most busted of all flushes. This will be an interesting dynamic, but I think it's likely that he will fulfil the role Lod Mandelson fulfilled when Gordon Brown swallowed his pride and brought him back into the cabinet to effectively run the government.

Tory MPs should accept this ugly mess as probably less ugly than any of the alternatives.

There's a satisfying amount of bitterness in this post that La Truss has survived. Hunt is no leadership threat, we saw how much support he has from MPs in the leadership election. He's been given a lifeline from obscurity; he won't run the Government and it'll probably be quite a few months before he even tries to run the Exchequer. He will in time develop his owm power base and leadership ambitions again, but for now, job's a good 'un.

    Don't understand this decision.
The penny has finally dropped that they need to get the sensible remainers back in to sort out the mess. I am relieved, was dreading it being Redwood or Rees-Mogg. Truss is back-tracking so fast you can see the sparks flying.
This has absolutely nothing to do with Brexit.

This now looks more like it could be more like the old May government than the Boris government
Well that's no bad thing is it? Let's get rid of Braverman and JRM before we get too carried away though HY.

    Shelley Duvall in The Shining?

News: Sweden has called off a „Joint Investigation Team“ with Germany and Denmark into the attacks on the Nordstream pipelines, referring to information too highly classified to share.

Americans. If it were the Russians, they'd be squealing it from the rooftops.

At some point, people need to start having serious conversations (preferably in non-bugged rooms) about US overreach. Destroying European infrastructure (if that's what has happened) is not cool.
The Russian attempt to start selling gas via Nordstream 2 points to another possibility.

This line is gloriously badly thought through:

Larry has also seen off several members of the animal kingdom. He’s currently on his fourth prime minister.

Wow. Truss leaves the stage after taking just FOUR questions.
Sharp intake of breath as she walks off.
'Aren't you going to say sorry?!' hack shouted as she left. https://twitter.com/paulwaugh/status/1580917874540978176/photo/1

As I say, we all make mistakes (I did on Putin not being stupid enough to invade).

But @Leon you do get it badly wrong a lot of the time. It's not helped by being so acerbic to anyone who disagrees with you.

    A learning experience for you.

We live in peculiar times when even I am slightly wrong on occasion. That is the scale of the meltdown we face

No change of direction. No mention of what she did wrong. Nothing about the principles of her economic base.

Just leave it to Hunt....and run away

Pathetic. I'm genuinely fed up with her.

    Fuxsake that was brilliant.

Shit statement off a piece of paper read in a dazed monotone.

    "I'll take questions. Errrrrrrrrrr....."

3 questions of how the fuck can you stay in your job.

And she pulls the plug and walks off stage.

She is the worst person I have ever seen in a senior political job. Even worse than Jeremy.

    Worse than Estelle Morris ?

It was an utterly abysmal performance. She read from a script and did not look to camera. I appreciate most read from scripts but it is not usually that obvious.

Who wants to own up to liking the pictured post? And who wants to go back and unlike asap?

Can't be bothered to go and find it, but I'd guess maybe LG and our piratical friend on current form, struggling for the third to be honest. Liz Truss fans please [come forward and] explain?
I don't recall the post, but I'd happily like it now. I find it funny how everyone's predictions about winning the next election are being held up to ridicule; unless I miss my guess, we haven't had the election.

Brutal question from Harry Cole - these are your policies from your campaign and you and Kwazi were in lockstep. How can you stay?

She was expecting a nicer question from what would normally be one of the Tory arse licking journalists and Cole stuck the knife in ! Lol
Remember that Harry Cole practically used to toss off Boris Johnson at press events. Perhaps she isn't to his taste.

I predicted it back in July. What I don't get is how someone so terrible doesn't realize their own limitations? What on earth made her think she has what it takes to be PM? And even more ludicrously how did she get so many people on the Conservative Party voting for her?

    Last week I said:

"This is quite comfortably our largest ever Labour vote share and largest ever Labour lead - even back in the ComRes days, don't think @PigsAndPolling saw anything like this."

    And repeat. https://twitter.com/SavantaComRes/status/1580917172310003712
