@carrieapples: Conservative GAIN Taunton Deane0
-
Do not understand Con Maj on betfair at all - 1.83!
Must be profit takers but it's basically free money.0 -
By the way, things will be a whole load more comfortable with 230 Lab + 50 SNP than if it was 280 Lab because there's no way SNP MPs will show up in Westminster all the time.0

Wake up to George Osborne's speech. I'm surprised the BBC aren't showing black framed testcards and playing classical music on all channels.
Cable and Hughes gone! The latter deservedly so.
Another recount in Morley? Come on, come on, come on...0 -
Tories 259 (+22) vs Lab 212 - another 100ish safe-ish Tory seats to go. Only 67 needed.0

Please can we be 100 seats more than Labour. That'd be just lovely.0

Norman Lamb holds on to N Norfolk with reduced majority and can begin his leadership bid.0

Is it a standard betting rule? Or have Betfair just added it and are completely out of whack with the rest of the industry? If the latter they are going to get a lot of bad publicity with the way this is shaping up.stjohn said:
That would be a huge betting story if the Tories just miss out on Betfair but actually get their majority.0 -
Unless there are Con losses still to come, there is a Con Maj even without Speaker.0

Just woken up. Gutted about UKIP, delighted about the failure of Ed is crap and about the election of so many Tory MPs, let's hope they're up to what the next 5 years is going to throw at them.0

Who has intelligence on Balls' result/recount... which way is it shading?0

Morning all. Well, I can honestly say I didn't expect that!
I always quite liked the Lib Dems, so I'm sorry that they did so utterly poorly. Some of the results were unlucky. But it indicates that their base didn't have much substance. Perhaps Labour's weakness amid a Conservative government is their next opportunity to rebuild for, what, the fourth time in a hundred years. They have already had many of their lives.
Congratulations to the Conservatives and SNP, and hard luck to all others. As an Irishman, I see great opportunity in the next five years: we may soon become more familiar with your banks and gain a Celtic ally in Europe! But remember that a few hours ago, this was the election no-one wanted to win.
The electoral system works unusually, if you don't mind a mildly-critical comment from abroad. Three parties with nationally-minded agendas win nearly 25 per cent votes and nine out of 650 seats. One party with a narrow separatist agenda wins 5 per cent of votes and 56 seats. Really, this is regrettable. I'm not a huge fan of Ukip or the Greens, but their exclusion doesn't mean parliament is more representative.
As for the substance of this site, this was my first major political betting event. I return home from an election party to see my book in very healthy profit. I thank the gods of betting that I stayed away from Ashcroft polls, after one minor dalliance in Sutton and Cheam. I hope people took my tip to back the DUP in Belfast North at 4/9; they won as handily as the unionist pact ordained. In turn, I took antifrank's long-shot tips on the SNP in their least winnable Central Belt seats.
Sadly, it's not all wins: I got 2/1 on Mr Galloway, but it seems one term is always enough dis-Respect from George for any constituency. And that Maidstone tip didn't transpire true. I was interested in Labour in many marginals, but somehow managed to only back them in Wirral West! I admit that was luck, not skill. And I'm still awaiting pay-outs on the Tories in the West Country, and my biggest bet, on the Tories in Blackpool North.
We learn from each other here, and I will pay part of my profits in tithe to the good maintainers of this blog, if the time comes. My thanks to you all, and I hope to continue contributing to this blog as the inevitable mess of this fixed-term parliament proceeds!0 -
@jameschappers: BBC now predicting Tories 329 Lab 233: a majority Conservative government. Bigger disaster for pollsters than 92?0
-
I repeat SNP MPs won't show up all the time, or even often. It will be a lot more comfortable than it might look.0

Is looking very much like the old adage on the polls take, the best Tory score and the worst Labour. Off top of my head best Tory was 36% and worst Labour was 31%....not far off that now with national vote share (35/31)0

LAB GAIN CITY OF CHESTER AND DEWSBURY from Cons0

BBC has Con +22.
Mid Dorset not recorded - that makes +23
That means 330 inc Speaker WITH NO MORE GAINS/LOSSES0 -
Goodbye Sir Robert Edward Russell, it takes a very special type of MP to tell your constituents to "get a life and stop whinging", so you are a very special man.
Duw genowgh hwi Dan Rogerson! Your proposal to make St Piran's Day a national holiday of Cornwall would have given a couple of hundred thousand people an extra day off work per year, which would have been nice.
Hail Sir Robert Smith, 3rd Baronet, best wishes for your fight with Parkinson's.0 -
Apparently Lib Dem rules mean leader needs 10% of MPs. They don't have 10 MPs...0

Labour gain Dewsbury and Chester.0

Labour fightback!0

Cons LOSE Dewsbury and Chester.0
-
In the air for Balls.

My suggestion for UKIP: elect Nuttal as leader. De-emphasis immigration and Europe and go hell for leather to target Labour's WWC vote in the North/Kent

It seems that when Tories have lost to Labour, they have often increased their vote, but the collapse in Lib Dem have added even more to Labour.0

Those two Labour gains are not good for the Tory overall majority.0

Lab win Chester by 93 votes:

Gavin Barwell holds Croydon Central for the Conservatives by 165 votes:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/politics/constituencies/E140006540 -
The Tories massively outspent the other parties in the year running up to polling day and this is a major factor in what has happened. Also I don't think it helped the SNP looking like they would be supporting Labour in government, so English voters have voted to stop that.0
-
Don't forget that every 1 LibDem loss in E&W means 2 in … oh, wait ;-)0

Come on, give us Balls!!!!0
