It is always said that the Tory Party is the most ruthless when it comes to dealing with failing leaders. That reputation will be reinforced by the events of 2022 during which so far has seen Johnson and Truss pushed aside when it became clear they had become electoral liabilities.

However, Sunak has come under fire because his wife owns a stake in Insofys - an Indian IT company that has operations in Moscow and reportedly has links to a major Russian bank. He denied accusations that his family is profiting from Russian dictator Vladimir Putin's regime.

    OK...

Infosys is an enormous company. It has over 250,000 employees, and is one of the world's largest computing services companies.

It will enter into multi-year outsourcing contracts, particularly with entities such as banks. (Twenty year terms to run old applications on AS400/S360 systems are far from uncommon.)

Statistically, the chances of it not having a contract with at least one Russian bank are close to zero. But, do Russian banks make up a meaningful percentage of revenues and profits (i.e. more than 1%)? I would be staggered if they did.

That was a lot of deadwood cleared out of cabinet. Lots remaining, of course, but probably about as much as he could dare to do whilst professing to be a unifier.

Let’s see who gets the jobs…
  • That first speech was a bit of a clunker. However, I'll take Mr Sunak at his word and judge him on his actions rather than his words.

First up - Appoint a Cabinet. Dumping the woeful Mogg and the serial-sycophant Lewis are good starts. Demoting Sharma is not so encouraging. Neither Smith or Morton were up to handling their positions and so that's good too. Berry, Buckland and Malthouse weren't up to being PPS to Smith or Morton so that's even better. Now he just needs to appoint talented newbies to replace the old tired rubbish.

    Who's that - Suella Braverm...

It was all going so well.

Media are visiting the pharmacy where Rishi Sunak grew up in Southampton. I know the area fairly well. It is the "Bassett Pharmacy" now but thanks to the wonders of Google StreetView and its history you can see it when it was the "Sunak Pharmacy":

He's done very well for himself.

His parents sacrifice will have been enormous to afford those school fees.
Back in the 80s, school fees at the top private schools were low enough that teachers, university lecturers and nurses could send their children to them, with some sacrifice and hoping for a bursary.

My old school is now £40k a year.
I don't want to upset you, but Rishi Rich is only 42. He went to public school in the 1990s.
Not upset. The mad inflation in school fees really took hold post 2000, I think.

Interestingly, some schools are pushing back. My youngest daughters school is near to getting 25% of the intake on full scholarships. They’ve created a massive foundation, American style, to pay for it. The explicit reason for this is to broaden the intake again.

A friend sending children to Harrow remarked that most of the parents in their class have their own Wikipedia pages. And not on a good way, very often.

Whoever you support, Rees-Mogg really is the depths.

It's all kicking off in the Commons as Jacob Rees-Mogg accuses fellow Tory MP Richard Graham of never having accepted the result of the Brexit referendum.
Graham made point of order objecting to that characterisation.

Yes, massive variations in number of visits. Obviously the busier areas get more. Quiet residential streets in the village I live in were last visited by Street View in 2008!

I also find it fun if you see people you know on Street View. As far as I'm aware I've never been caught by one. My daughter was captured once on the way to her bus stop. My father-in-law has managed to be included on 3 separate occasions in 2 different locations!
Disappointingly, though, you can't check the date of the aerial ("satellite") views, but perhaps that is cos they are composites anyway, or I have simply not found the bit to twiddle.
Fairly sure there is that option in Google Earth. Can't check currently.
Ah, thanks - I failed to upgrade to GE when I last changed PC. Must do that.

Look in the top left corner of the image. There's a drop down under the word google.
Oh yeah. Is that new or has that been there all the time and I have never noticed?
It's probably been there some time and I've never noticed. It's useful for looking at how areas change. Look at how my home town of Woking has changed since 2008:

It's rubbish though: nowhere has images older than about twenty years ago. I want to see how a place looked in Victorian times, or Roman times, or when dinosaurs roamed the earth.
I would love Google to license the old OS and Tithe maps. Not least because archaeologists would love them.
Have a look at nls.uk/maps if you haven't - emphasis on Scotland but quite a lot of rUK maps, incl. OS, Admiralty etc.
Yes - they are great. One thing I think google could do is the hard yards of registration; getting them all scaled and aligned.

If you use the Internet Wayback Machine, you can look at the old Google Maps and see it before it was there...
Showed a GenZ student Wayback Machine a couple of weeks ago. Blew her mind (I remember being similarly in awe of it around fifteen years earlier, when I discovered it, if I remember correctly). She described it as 'sick' which is probably the first time I've heard anyone use that term in a non-ironic (and non-literal) way.

I was going through a script in which I'd referenced, in comments, a formula to a website, the page for which no longer existed, but was archived. IBM developer website, which I'd thought would be a fairly safe link.

ETA: Reminds me, another student a couple of years before, on making a silly logic/coding mistake said, of herself "I'm such a nonce". Cue those of us in the room of my age or above doing te whole "I don't think that word means what you think it means routine". Turns out it has a different meaning for the GenZers to that understood by those of us that are older.

Kit Malthouse left the Cabinet rather than accept a demotion, The Telegraph understands.

The former education secretary was offered a minister of state role by Rishi Sunak but turned it down, opting instead to return to the backbenchers.

I think he’s good, talented. Impressive when interviewed, knows his onions. I would have him in my cabinet.

Should have sanctions placed on them for supporting Russia and Russian companies. Typical Tories, always money first.
    (1) Infosys is a publicly traded company (worth $75bn), and Ms Sunak owns a minority position. She - I'm sure - receives multimillion dividend cheques every year. But she has no control. Indeed, the board of Infosys is legally and morally obliged to run the business for the benefit of shareholders.

    (2) It's an Indian company. India has imposed no sanctions on Russia.

    (3) Infosys's Russian contracts may well predate even the 2014 invasion of Crimea and annexation of parts of Ukraine. It may well have no right to unilaterally terminate the contract.

Have a look at nls.uk/maps if you haven't - emphasis on Scotland but quite a lot of rUK maps, incl. OS, Admiralty etc.
Yes - they are great. One thing I think google could do is the hard yards of registration; getting them all scaled and aligned.
NLS do do that as well (now with lidar as well).
I need to have a proper look. Thanks!
I think #'georeferenced' is what you want - eg

    https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=16.1&lat=55.91338&lon=-2.13965&layers=168&b=1

Edit: twiddle the transparency knob (no wish to return to yesterday's discussion intended).

Off to sort some boring stuff ...
  • I do wonder just why journalists not least Rigby think it is professional to shout out at politicians

This morning Penny Mordaunt was walking towards no 10 and she had a number of journalists near screaming at her in an act of straightforward bullying

It is not just politicians who are poor, journalists also need to be held far more responsible for their own behaviour
  • Coming to PB party today rather late (though it's not yet 8am my time).

Has Rishi Sunak announced any Cabinet or other ministerial-level appointments yet?

NOT speculation, but actually announced? And if so, who to do what (to whom)? Thanks!

Just caught up on Sunak's inaugural speech outside No.10.

Why can I hear some sort of loud rock/metal music in the background throughout?

    Steve Bray being a dickhead.
    Oh FFS.

Why can't we pass a specific law just to ban Steve Bray?
What does the guy do for a living? Nothing I assume?
    I think he's a professional wanker.
You can get paid for that? Asking for a friend natch.

It's not bullying, it isn't abusing them (usually), it's just annoying and I don't see the point of it. They're not going to respond, so who is it being done for?

    "I predict a Riot" I think.

    Fifth education secretary since July...

    Quite the stat.

I'm imagining one of those early years maths books where instead of pictures of chickens, houses, cakes and the like, you get to learn all your basic addition and subtraction with pictures of 2022 education secretaries.
