Southgate's going to get that a lot from now on. Holding them back until then just seemed strange, were they really that much better at taking penalties on paper? Might not have mattered, but that's life.

Result is kind of poetic - we are very very good but not quite good enough to win a tournament like this.

It wasn't exactly the 1966 cup final, was it?
  • another_richardanother_richard Posts: 24,967

Smart move with the subs, not

Thought - have Rashford and Sancho had a kick while they were on ?

I know they're good at penalties but you'd still want to kick the ball a bit before you took a penalty.
  • I love Italy, love Italians, love the way they play under Mancini. They deserved it.

But we had a very good run. Far too defensive at times: that was our undoing. Sitting back. Not playing adventurously. We can take a leaf out of the Italians' book on that.

    Boris' luck ran out?

  • kle4kle4 Posts: 91,392

Have to feel for Pickford there

    Did his job.

Not good penalty taking, despite all the practice. A lot of 'great' saves in shootouts are anything but, it's players not getting it far enough in the corner or high enough.

The alternative would be take the penalties after 90 minutes and then play extra time - the team which lost the shootout then has to win in the 30 minutes.

If that had happened today I think Italy would have got another goal in extra time.

Good japes, except of course the people making preparations for a win have nothing to do with pitch performance - who doesn't do preparation in the event you win? Lot of 'Italy 2020 Champion' scarves in production could equally have been for naught.

Stuttering has never seemed worth it to me. Ok, the keeper may move too soon if you do, but if you hit it well them guessing the right way won't matter. And if you do it too often they will start to wait for you, and if your placement and power aren't great (many 'great' penalties are not, they would be easily savable if the keeper guesses right) now they have a chance.

What, we have to accept that the multiculturalism of the team is why it’s the best English team ever because of all the backgrounds of the players, but now we have to ignore that because we’ve lost?
  • Philip_ThompsonPhilip_Thompson Posts: 65,826
Its been said that our country needed this cup run after going through Covid and the lads have done well and its been great to have the Final.

Italy are the country that probably needed the cup more than we did, that have been hit hardest this past year and a half. As disappointed as I am to lose, happy for them that they've got this.

Roll on 2022 World Cup now. Hopefully it can be like 2018 and 2019 Champions League finals.
  • CookieCookie Posts: 11,182

No negative comments to make, the lads have done us proud.

Fair play and well done to the Italians.

Yes, it was actually the best England performance in my lifetime. They didn't win. But they might have done; and if they had, it wouldn't be because they had fluked it.

Still. That is the best England will ever do in my lifetime. All downhill from here, sadly.
