On sea/ water rescues I was reminded that when I was 14 and canoeing on the Tweed at Berwick just by the old bridge, a youngster fell/was pushed off the quay into the river. I managed to get to him as he was disappearing under the water, lift him onto my canopy, and paddle to the ladder at the quay and carry him up to the safety on the quayside, where an ambulance arrived
I was so relieved he suffered no adverse consequences though an investigation by the police followed into how he had ended up in the water
Rescues in water are instinctive and never a thought to personal danger
"Streets around Piccadilly Circus & Leicester Square are busy with fans. We have officers on hand.
"We'd urge everyone to keep themselves safe and look out for each other. We've seen people jumping off street lamps or hoardings, this could easily end in injury."
I've realised that we just have to roll with this. It is a one-off. It is England's first final in half a century, the nation with the most passionate (and inebriate) fans, the same nation that invented the game, it is at Wembley, it's against a great opponent, and - most of all - it is the end of 16 months of lockdown hell and bleakness
It is going to be mayhem, a bacchanal, a saturnalia, the Lord of Misrule is abroad. Just got to go with the flow

Hmmm. This is the sort of thing that could put the game in jeopardy.
And no successful World Cup bid
I don't think this sort of thing registers when a world cup is awarded, compared to what drives the decisions. I also think we'd have little shot for all sorts of reasons.
But it is depressing it still happens, even if things are not generally as bad as they once were.

You know who I feel sorry for today? Prince Harry. He’d have been there at Wembley giving it large. Instead it’ll be a kale salad with the Mrs discussing the importance of supporting CRT in schools.

Greece has high levels of vaccine scepticism, and is waaaaaaayyyy behind Western Europe in terms of roll-out - they could well have a pretty awful Delta wave.

I'm beginning to worry about the spectators being put in jeopardy, actually.
Surely this would be Cressida Dick's final f*ck up if it turns out not enough police?

EXCL. Cruise ships wd be used to quarantine thousands of students from red-list countries under plans explored by Scottish Govt. Critics warn of petri dish like conditions. 1st UK Covid death was someone infected while quarantined on a cruise ship
Jackie Baillie, the Scottish Labour health spokeswoman, said: “It looks like the Scottish government is making things up as they go along. Having banned people from cruises and banned cruise ship passengers coming ashore in Scotland, they now appear intent on housing thousands of students in close quarters in petri dish-like conditions which risk a huge spread of the virus.”
Scenes like this remind me why I no longer give a fuck about football and haven't for many years. Absolutely pathetic.
I was in Russia for the Semi-Final and Final of the World Cup. All I saw was good spirits, and at worst a bit of banter. That was with my boys, all in England shirts and flags, in a crowd with numbers of Croat supporters.
Say what you like about Putin, but he knew how to run a good tournament, with no trouble.

The drama was going on elsewhere. As it has been in the UK for many years. Civilians have long been left alone at the footie. Father and sons with scarves/flags/shirts? Would get a free pass by any mob if perhaps a bit of joshing.

Italian trains are in fact still very good. The original Roman road makers in London would have been proud.
In particular, I don't see how Saka doesn't get a start.
Because its 5 at the back, and Saka can play left wing back, but Shaw has been very good at left back / left wing back all tournament.
This is the downside to Southgate 2 systems, there are very limited number of positions for flair players. There is basically 1-2 "free" roles, from which there is Sterling, Sancho, Foden, Grealish, Saka, and Rashford all vying for them.
And Southgate totally trusts Sterling, so realistically at most 1 free role, and 5 players all who could play there.

I think it’s worse than lack of flair. With this formation, if your wing backs get pegged back you don’t function.
I’m not a big fan of going to back five in this era believing you are more secure. If you concede a midfield presser and midfield pass option to your opponents, you will concede too much possession and territory, leaving opponents with the possession playing too close to your defensive line, ie free kicks, your passer will be pressed too quickly by their spare man, and it leaves you looking like you are playing crap and without passion out manned in midfield.
It’s the first really big mistake Southgate has made in a tournament, and it’s pretty fatal really, going back five and leaving his midfield and forwards running round like headless chickens. 🤬
I would have Henderson for Mount, overload midfield press ourselves for at least 60 mins, I would play a long ball game. We have people who intuitively know where they should be, we should use that and their pace rather than a wing back game.
You know who I feel sorry for today? Prince Harry. He’d have been there at Wembley giving it large. Instead it’ll be a kale salad with the Mrs discussing the importance of supporting CRT in schools.

No doubt she was in this mysterious trial that Gove and other ministers all seem to know about but no one else does. See Dan Hodges in today's Mail.

It also gives the aging slow Italian defence, who don't really want to do a lot of running, only 1 speed merchant to worry about. If you had Trent Alexander- Arnold and Saka as your wing back, then that is a different kettle of fish.
Foden is a huge loss today. If they get pinned back, he is the man who has the world class ability to work through organized tight defences. Grealish potentially can, but he will also give the ball away a lot, which the Italians will then keep for 5 mins.

I guess you are joking, but just in case: you have to prove you haven't got Covid (by test prior to departure), or have evidence of vaccination +14 days, or evidence of prior Covid infection before you are allowed to travel to Greece. Greeks are far more likely to contract Covid from their fellow Greeks than international travellers.

No, because it isn’t true. It is however a famous putdown and deserved an airing
What he did was spend large sums of money on the main line networks, used by tourists and journalists. Then, he demanded realistic timetables. Previously the rail managers had been running timetables predicated on a running speed of around 120kph in stretches, where the realistic top speed on the railways of that time and place was around 110 kph. Moreover, no pathing allowances had been left to let them regain time. So, naturally, they were frequently late.
So he made the prestigious trains appear to be running much more reliably. Hence the myth of ‘he made the trains run on time.’
People on quiet branch lines didn’t get a look in, of course, but the Italian railway network was so chaotic that didn’t make much difference. There were numerous stations built so far from the villages they were meant to serve that they were actually further away than most inhabitants had ever travelled.

I agree. Our Speed testing their defence, and matched up in the middle was by far better option.
