How many minutes before the pundits call for Southgate's head? After all, he knows how important penalties are. He has had them practising. And they were shite. Must be his fault.

Also, can I predict that Twitter will now attack taking the knee and how wonderfully multicultural the team is. "The ones who look English scored. The migrants missed" etc etc.

The criticism I've seen on Twitter and online is that they were young kids who hadn't kicked the ball all game and put under too much pressure with just a couple of minutes on the field.

Don't project your own prejudices onto others.
My prejudices? They're all giants however shit their penalty ended up being. To step up and take responsibility is a massive thing. What they need is what Southgate has given them - his handling of the players on the pitch after the end has been a study in good people management.

Rashford totally cocked that up, what on Earth happened there

He sent the keeper the wrong way, just scuffed it a bit. Not even a foot, by the look of it.

Leicesters new winger took a nice penalty. A bit anonymous otherwise though.

Weirdly, in the long run England scoring so early was probably a negative on balance in terms of how it affected how they approached the game after that.

As happened in 2018 against Croatia

He tried to fool the keeper and only fooled himself.

There's no need for a forward to try the clever dick stuff, that should be left for players who can't score goals.
Presumably that's how he was taking them in training. In which case Southgate is an idiot for thinking that it was a good idea. Even Jorginho who takes them like that regularly messed his up tonight.

What, we have to accept that the multiculturalism of the team is why it’s the best English team ever because of all the backgrounds of the players, but now we have to ignore that because we’ve lost?

People making fatuous political comments because of the backgrounds of players was something I criticised. But your riposte overshoots those comments considerably.

X being wrong doesn't make harsher thing Y ok or even equivalent. If you stand on my toe deliberately that's wrong, but I am more in the wrong if I respond by punching you.

One of the good things about when England play football is that, regardless of the result, there'll always be part of Britain delighted by it. Scenes of jubilation in Scotland tonight. Very loud singing of, "It's coming Rome."

I guess you take your pleasures where you can find them.

England looked like worthy champions in the first half. So credit to Italy for turning that around.

We won that 4-2 in play. If we were that good and deserved to win we would have scored 2-1 or 3-1 against Italy.

The team did not play fantastically, but the only obvious call that can be put on his shoulders is bringing on penalty specialists who unfortunately did not work out. There'll be armchair analysis, that's part of the game, but I think most people can see we did well to get so far in the first place, his place is assured.

Basically what's needed is a higher scoring sport which doesn't end in a draw, and where the rules are designed to discourage cheating. Rugby, perhaps. Or cricket.
5 yellow cards… perhaps there should be some system where (say) 5 yellow cards = 1 bonus goal for the other side

It has been a great tournament which has lifted people's spirits across the Continent. Hopefully there won't be any moronic trouble now.

    Next year Qatar!

Can’t wait for 50,000 pissed up footy fans to experience Qatari policing... ;)
I hope the stadiums have the best air conditioning systems money can buy and that they don't break down.
That was their original plan, but in the end it worked out cheaper to bribe FIFA to stage the tournament in December rather than summer.

Qatar in June would have been hilarious!

On the plus side, we didn't lose to France.

    Or Germany.

It's hard to hate the Italians. Such a lovely country.

Rashford's will hurt the most. Poor penalties being saved is one thing, you can think how maybe you were unlucky the keeper guessed correctly, but missing is all on you.

Actually, I don't have a problem with a player hitting the woodwork if they are shooting properly. The Sancho and Saka misses were pretty poor in my opinion as they were safe kicks. But Rashford's was the worse.

    I do feel for Southgate.

For the rest of his life he'll be wondering about the Rashford and Sancho substitutions.

Yes, arguably he just lost his second penalty shootout for England

You should hope nobody screenshots that and lets the media know.

    You'd be resigning your seat.
No I most certainly would not it is what many were thinking and I got several likes for it on twitter.

There was nothing remotely racist about it, if Rashford had spent as much time practising his football as he had campaigning against government policy who knows what might have happened.

He is a highly paid professional footballer at the end of the day, if he wants to be a full time political campaigner he should do so and give up the football
You have absolutely no awareness and to be honest best advice is to have an early night, though it is not early
Yes the usual anti Johnson crowd on here (including you) and PB thought police will pile on but tough it was an entirely reasonable comment
Does it not cut both ways, that the PM should stop fucking about getting involved in football photo ops and get on with governing the country?

Anyone think Rashford or Saka or Sancho would have the bottle to have done this (or been broke enough!)

Did he? He sent the goalie the wrong way.
A foot from being the perfect penalty.
Pickford had a good tournament. Arguably Man of The Tournament.
    He did.
But I wouldn't go that far.
    Probably Chiesa

Slab head Maguire was the best penalty of the whole lot. Fired at pace right into the top corner.

If you stand on my toe deliberately that's wrong, but I am more in the wrong if I respond by punching you.
how little English white it has.

I just find it mildly amusing that it was the whites that scored.

Reasonable or not it was rather obvious trolling attempt, unless you genuinely think his performances on the pitch, which have been fine up to now, have been affected only for penalty taking and only tonight, despite him presumably not spending time campaigning during the tournament. And since many who dislike his campaigning like to make a big thing of all the real work being done by his PR people.

I know you'll insist you were entirely serious, you always do, but come on, I'm supposed to believe you actually think Rashford's penalty taking skills were in any way affected by his past campaigning? Pull the other one. As trolling goes its so blatant there's no way I could be outraged.

Weirdly, in the long run England scoring so early was probably a negative on balance in terms of how it affected how they approached the game after that.

    That's a good point imo.

    Two teams managed 35.

Penalties are a strange thing. I wasn't a huge fan of Mesut Ozil, but he was always fairly composed in good situations. Except penalties.

So he should. He brought them on, almost certainly for the penalties, and then we get some silly tricksy stuff which fails, just after watching Kane and Maguire show how it should be done. The KISS principle applies to penalties. Why England of all teams would do anything else given our history is utterly beyond me.
