Terrible goal kick there with only 4 minutes of regular time left, to just kick it straight out of play giving them the ball back.

I know nobody else much cares, but... first set Tsitsipas, on the tie break.

That lasted nearly 70 minutes. Could be in for a long evening in Paris.

    Hope Tsitsipas wins :)
That would be nice. He's currently 7-6, 3-2 up, still the one break ahead in the second.

This is a group to come second in.
I disagree, we want to avoid having to play France and then one of Belgium or Italy before the final.

More chance of losing in the last 16, but winning the group is the easier route to the final.
If you want to be the best you have to beat the best.
Portugal showed the benefit of getting on the easier side of the draw. Perhaps second would be better if France also look like coming second.
Win the group we play all but one game at Wembley. People get too hung up on opponents in the last 16. If you can get home advantage you should take it.

Yes, Tsitsipas is a force on clay. He could do it. Djoko can't play better than in his semi. Indeed nobody can.
Djokovic is not playing nearly that well, and is running out of time. Tsitsipas is now 5-2 ahead in the second.

I was toying with adding Siwa to an Egypt itinerary for when the new Phaoronic museum opens.
I spent a few days there a while back. Had fun clinging on for dear life to the roof rack of a 4x4 as we went driving up and down the dunes.

Otherwise, nice and relaxing - a bit out of the way, though.
4 hours by bus from Marsa Matrouh, apparently, which is just past El Alamein. So doable. Would be a quiet few days escape from Alex and Cairo and the tourists in Aswan and Luxor.

    Better off out then….

Yeah, why would we want to be part of a powerful grouping that protects the interests of its members? Whinging from the sidelines is so much better.
You mean like Ireland a couple of months ago over the NI issue, or Greece a few years ago when the money ran out, or Italy when the migrants flooded in......

Third set in Paris is still on serve, but Djokovic continues to be outplayed by Tsitsipas. No sign of a momentum shift - although it is now deuce on Tsitsipas' serve...

    3-1 to Djokovic.

Good start. Long way to go. 👍

They might as well give us the trophy now.
Good win but they'll surely need to be more adventurous if they want to win the thing.

Out of interest how tall is Sunak?
5 ft 6 inches but that's a self declaration and with flats.
Is that like WWE wrestler heights?
    WWE isn't really my thing.

I was shocked to find it is all staged rather than proper wrestling.
Performers worthy of respect that lot. Maintaining kayfabe whilst performing some dangerous manuevres, even when they go wrong, is impressive.

7-6, 6-2 in Paris. Tsitsipas is one set away. Djokovic looks beaten - but you'd be nuts to write him off.

    him off

As best I can work out, Sunak is at around the 15th percentile in height, whereas Johnson is around 50th.

The biggest problematic aspect is that indicated by the thread header. The 90th percentile is a whopping 6 inches taller than Sunak, so 1-in-10 other men will be at least half a foot taller than him.

It shouldn't matter, but we know it does.

That said, if the next Conservative leadership election happens while there are in government it will matter a lot less than if they were in Opposition.

Congratulations again to England. Excellent performance against the World Cup runners up.

Away from football, is the COVID cases curve flattening out a bit?

    Joffrey was my favourite character.
I hadn’t noticed his footwear, but figures, I guess.

Just needs a sex change. That would give a whole different complexion on the contest.

Sorry for being off-topic but hopefully no-one will mind. What ancient building is this, shown in Dominic Cummings's main profile photo on his new Substack account? I thought at first that might be Petra but it's probably somewhere else.

    Aegina?
I think it might be Siwa.
Great work. Many thanks, @Black_Rook. It's the Temple of Amun, also known as the Temple of the Oracle, at Siwa.
Cummings has even started a company called Siwah Limited. As Giles Turner writes at Bloomberg.com, "It is unclear what Cummings’s new project will entail. Wāḥat Sīwah is the site of a legendary oracle that proclaimed Alexander the Great as the Pharaoh of Egypt."

    Love it. Watch this space.

On topic: sounds like an argument for not electing women to high office. Hasn't got in the way of Nicola Sturgeon, for example.

Besides, if a quick Google is to be believed, Sunak is only 5cm shorter than Johnson.

    He really isn't.

    He wears platforms.
So did Abba, didn't stop them from going down a storm in this country.
    Rishi is no ABBA.
Particularly when he sings Gimmie, Gimmie, Gimmie...
I suppose When All is Said and Done is out, as it would imply he’ll ‘pay the bill.’

There was a times a huge amount of booing during the game, what was that all about? Just random large boos, not after a bad foul or anything.

Home fans at most of the games so far seem to be quick to whistle/boo when the opposition have the ball - is that what you mean, or was it more random?
I can't claim I understand but I worry present trends are renormalising bad behaviour and disrespect in the game towards players of either side.
    Oh, come on.

Booing and jeering opposing players is a good part of the football pantomime. Half of the enjoyment of going to the football is that it is one of the few places permitted to shout at other people in public.

The Oracle allegedly declared Alexander to be the son of the god Zeus-Ammon, and therefore divine. Does Cummings now aspire to similar status?

I thought it was an excellent start. A solid 1-0 win is exactly what you want in the opener. I wasn't that confident about us for the tournament but I am now. I think it could be coming home. ⚽ 💃

You should go to an England v. Wales match in the rugger, especially the ones in Cardiff.

The sheep botherers are quite rude and vulgar about what we English should do, particularly when it comes to where we should put the sweet chariot.

I was raised on proper wrestling, growing up I used to watch with my grandfather the likes of Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks.

They were proper wrestlers, not like these fancy dan WWE lot.

Congratulations again to England. Excellent performance against the World Cup runners up.

Away from football, is the COVID cases curve flattening out a bit?

If you look at the percentage change in the 7-day case rate then today's rate of increase is lower than yesterday's for the first time in a while. Maybe it's an inflection point. We'll see.

It'll keep escalating for a while.

Of course, we knew it would keep escalating for a while, even without the latest variant panic.

None of this means that the wheels are falling off.
