That's hopeless, I think. They are not both going to see the sun rise in 2024. From the liberal point of view the Democrats simply have to win.

Indeed, the next President could end up appointing three or four justices.
OTOH Scalia and Kennedy are both 79 too...
Yes, but as Kennedy swings both ways you are really looking at 1.5 conservatives and 2.5 liberals on the glide path.
Some of these Justices should think seriously about retiring before Obama becomes even more ineffectual (we will notice when he has actually left office won't we?)
Would Obama be able to get a confirmation through the Senate in time though? The GOP could stall until after the election and if they win then just continue stalling until it is too late.
He's still got 11 months. But he should be working on it now.

There were some willing to take the 15/2 on Andy Burnham as next Labour leader on Betfair sportsbook when he was close to 65s on the exchange

(This was the Thursday evening before the Saturday Corbyn was announced as Labour leader)

There are some clueless/deluded punters out there.

He's got 11 months in an election year. No chance, time is out for that sort of thing already. Maybe if the Democrats controlled the Senate but even then the GOP could likely stall long enough. But with a Republican Senate? More chance of Corbyn being PM than a liberal being confirmed by a GOP senate in an election year.

Reading AC's diaries again at the moment - he makes a fantastic point that at the beginning of a term of govt, ministerial organisation, rather than communication/messaging, is more important. I'm guessing that is why Hunt and Gove were in their positions in the beginning of terms.

Time value of money. Tying up £1,000 to make £10 in six months is a money loser because money costs me more than 2% per year.

Something like that. There's an explanation right at the bottom of the blog page:

1/9/16: Morton Blackwell -- national committeeman from Virginia -- endorses Ted Cruz. The Republican Party of Virginia rules explicitly leave the three automatic delegates -- including Mr. Blackwell -- unbound. The RNC, however, is considering the party delegates bound, but with little guidance as to how to treat delegates left unbound by state rules. One interpretation is that a pledged like Mr. Blackwell's binds him to Cruz (though perhaps not indefinitely).

Time value of money. Tying up £1,000 to make £10 in six months is a money loser because money costs me more than 2% per year.
My strategy is to bet large amounts on near certainties, at generous odds around evens. Obama, Corbyn, etc.

Chasing small amounts over long periods just isn't worth my time.

I can get 10%+ from other investments elsewhere.

    And your point?
That they combined the most benign Green Party policies (of which I thoroughly approve, as it happens) with a calm desire for brutal genocide.

The political mind is much more complex than some basic left-right spectrum. We easily forget this.

    Shit Sean, you're developing nuance.

Not if you lay that bet 6000 times and only pay out once.

Most of the long-odds laying on betfair is done by people who understand statistics and have large bankrolls.

Those who don't, learn their lesson pretty quickly.

So (for example) placing £1000 on "Conservative most seats" five hours after the 2015 GE exit poll at odds of 1.01, risking £1000 for a profit of £10, would be characterised as "picking up pennies in front of the bulldozer"?

    Good to know, thank you.

Just read "Look Who's Back", a satirical novel about modern life and the mass media told through the eyes of Hitler who has just woken up to find himself in modern Germany. Amusing in parts, if disappointing overall.
Hitler turns out to be a big fan of the Green Party.
