Any odds on how long his marriage will last if he goes or is that tasteless?

Being booed in public, in a very high-profile situation, which she was probably really looking forward to, must have been a watershed moment for Mrs Johnson. Her colossal oaf of a husband is a figure of scorn and contempt. That is very trying on any relationship. How many marriages survive, for example, a husband imprisoned for fraud or theft? Can you still respect and love someone after they have been publicly humiliated and exposed. Perhaps. But it would take enormous effort. Does Carrie have the stamina?

    Shame it's a secret ballot...
Quite the opposite. It gives ministers the chance to be loyal on the radio yet dish the clown what he deserves in the ballot.

Memo circulating amongst Tory MPs listing 13 reasons why Johnson should be ditched.

"One reason given for removing him is that he was booed outside the thanksgiving service for the Queen at St Paul’s Cathedral. The memo says this “tells us nothing that data does not”, citing polling that “no social group trusts him, with even 55 per cent of current Conservatives calling him untrustworthy”.

A Tory MP said: “A Conservative prime minister being booed by people who turned up to witness people arriving for a service in honour of the Queen is pretty dire. When you’ve lost the royalists, and a lot of them will be former service personnel, that’s our core vote.” Johnson was also booed while dining at Morito, a restaurant in east London where his son Theo worked. The Mail on Sunday said the prime minister responded with a “dismissive hand gesture and left”.

I've just seen the snippet that Johnson was booed at Morito.

I've been there, it's very good, but definitely a hangout of the liberal well-to-do. What possessed him to think of eating there? He was bound to come a cropper.
Did they refuse his credit card or something?
His son was working there - so I suspect he was making use of a friends and family discount...

Never mind Sunak shocking us by quitting today, is there the prospect of someone on the far right doing so? Perhaps because Brexit isn't being done hard and fast enough?

How about Rees-Mogg - he likes things hard and fast doesn't he? Or cosplay Thatcher Liz Truss? OK so they have been the cheerleaders for government policies they would then be resigning to condemn.

But why not? Raaaaaab resigned as Brexit Secretary in protest at his own work in the role...

It’s almost enough to get me to support Boris again, but…. Not quite enough. Not this time

Tho I do wonder what will happen to the blind rage of the Remoaners, when and if Boris goes. Will it finally dissipate, or will they simply move on to the next target for their angst?

I wonder what effect Ukraine has had on them.

For years they eulogised Germany's political leadership as the 'true leaders of the western world'.

And now Germany's political leadership is utterly discredited with Boris being shown to have been right.
The governments continuation and reinforcement of the long standing policy on Ukraine - arming them and backing them since 2014 - has earned a grudging respect. On that issue, alone. Even among some very anti-BJ people.

To put it another way - if he was merely muddling along in the middle in the rest of politics, his reputation and polls would probably be stratospheric from Ukraine.

However, he is toast stuck in the toaster.

Yes yes yes, whatever you need to say, whomever you need to blame to justify your support for Boris. We get it. It's not you, it's us. Thoughts and prayers for you at this difficult time. You'll get through it.
@Leon's had a difficult run tbf - in February he had to ditch his support for Putin.
Anyone else remember the short-lived account that appeared when the "Leon" account was temporarily banned? Went by the name of "Vlad". Still, mid-January. Who could possibly have known the hundreds of thousands of troops put on the Ukraine border by the real-life "Vlad" would be up to no good?

All Cabinet Members backed May openly according to wiki, even though their actions not helping her re the Brexit deal indicate they didnt really back her.

I presume its because they both have to show the leader they are loyal if they win, and because even some who want him gone would want serving cabinet members to show loyalty.
    I agree.

Certainly for non-leadership candidates, the phrase "a traitor to one king is a traitor to all" springs to mind.
Well the describes pretty well the entire cabinet including Johnson.

Brady will not say whether he has submitted a letter to himself calling a no confidence vote, but he says it would be an odd thing to do.

And he says that, while technically it would be possible to change the rules, as they stand now if Boris Johnson wins there will be a year-long “period of grace” during which a further leadership contest cannot take place."

Playing to the "It's now or never" vibe?

Ironic that, at the end of the Platinum Jubilee, the Conservatives might finish off the Queen's 16th Prime Minister.

This is definitely the highlight of the jubilee. It is The Biggie that everyone will remember. Just as the Sex Pistols hitting Number One was the clear highlight of the silver jubilee.

    God save the Queen
    A fascist regime
    They made you a moron
    Potential H-bomb

    God save the Queen
    She ain't no human being
    There is no future
    In England's dreaming

Don't be told about what you want
Don't be told about what you need
No future, no future, no future for you

    God save the Queen
    We mean it, man
    We love our Queen
    God saves

    God save the Queen
    Tourists are money
    But our figurehead
    Is not what she seems

    God save history
    God save your mad parade
    Oh Lord, have mercy!
    All crimes are paid

When there's no future, how can there be sin?
We're the flowers in the dustbin
We're the poison in the human machine
We're the future, we're the future

    God save the Queen
    We mean it, man
    We love our Queen
    God saves

    God save the Queen
    We mean it, man

It's just amazing how little the Tories learned from Labour's Corbyn years. The idea that the electorate will shrug its shoulders and forget that it detests Johnson because he has won a leadership vote of confidence is for the fairies.

    Corbyn VONC was 2016

In GE2017 Labour under Corbyn achieved the biggest increase in its vote share since WW2.

You as usual are mixing up your wish with the reality of what the electorate actually did.

No, it is not Brexit. It is Partygate wot dunnit. All over the country, people made sacrifices large and small in order to comply with regulations promulgated from 10 Downing Street. Celebrations were cancelled; dying relatives went unvisited. People might well feel personally insulted that those at the very top of government exempted themselves, and angered at Boris's apparent lack of contrition.

In the words of Aaron Bell, MP, Does the Prime Minister think I am a fool?

Sir Korma's job is harder if he's not facing Boris. The country would vote in a chicken Korma if it faced Boris at the next election such is the feverish mood against him. Against say HCunt (Or Wallace or whoever) Beer has to actually present an alternative plan for the country - it's a much higher bar.

Didn't think we would have a VoNC.

Still feel like Johnson survives, but am less certain.

Odds of us getting someone better than Johnson, I would guess at 75%+.

Probably the only people worse would be JRM, Priti Patel...? I suppose there are a few national security risks who would be worse too.

JRM and Patel have nil chance so I wouldn't worry. Many are concerned about Truss (maybe a tad unfairly) and I expect MPs to organise so that she isn't in the final two. My best guess, still, is Hunt and Wallace.
Don't share your optimism, JRM or someone like him may well stand on tax-cutting, do brexit properly, bonfire of red tape etc. There's a big market for that.

    It’s not a clutched straw. It’s a fact

If Starmer is completely exonerated, yes he’s fine

But if he gets a Dom Cummings-like ticking-off, minus a FNP, then the stench of hypocrisy will be real, if he clings on. And it will definitely be underlined by the fact he will then - if Boris quits - be facing a squeaky-clean new Tory PM

    Damaging comparison

Wouldn't be such a rush to be PM if the sacrifice of the PM was made the highlight. The Royalists are always, at their syrupiest, sayings oh look how the RF can invent 500 year old ceremonial overnight ... so just as well there won't be more jubilees.

Now we have an actual VONC, and before the by-elections, I'd expect to see some movement - particularly since there are strong rumours it could be close.

Sure. But the frothiest rage and fiercest glee can be found at Remoaner Central

Yes. It's the sort of people who follow rules even when they know nobody is watching who are most enraged by the failure to do so by Johnson and Number 10.

Brown's time in office includes the time after he lost the election but before he was replaced by Cameron.

When Iain Duncan Smith lost the VONC he remained Leader of the Opposition until his replacement, Howard, was chosen.

If Boris loses tonight, as he should, then he can and probably should remain in office until he is able to advise the Queen on who should replace him and that would take him past Brown and Wellington, and possibly Chamberlain too, but not May.

If he flounces immediately that would be going against precedent and shirking his responsibilities. I wouldn't put it past him.

That, I think is at the heart of it. Intelligent Brexiteers will recognize that the job now is to focus on un-fucking the things that Johnson's version of Brexit has fucked; and that will necessarily take the wind out of the sails of most Remainers. It's hard to look coherent if you are protesting someone doing more or less what you would recommend yourself; only the ultra-hard-line "pretend it never happened and imagine everyone will agree to us proceeding as if it were still 2016" fruit loops will be left on that particular island.

I'm not for a minute suggesting that there is such as a species as the Intelligent Brexiteer on the Tory benches, but you never know.

Boris Johnson is currently on 1,048.

The MPs turned to Boris only when things got very desperate and they felt he was the only option to recover position and win a GE. They were right.

It would be very on brand for them to then junk him unceremoniously once they felt he was no longer needed.

I dont expect it, but it has logic.

In GE2017 Labour under Corbyn achieved the biggest increase in its vote share since WW2.

You as usual are mixing up your wish with the reality of what the electorate actually did.
Corbyn lost and then went on to lose again.

Well there will be an undoubted honeymoon for whoever takes over, although I will suggest, that while Partygate has done for Johnson, unless they get a grip, the economy will do for the Conservatives. You saw how quickly Sunak's reputation was flushed down the toilet. It may all be circumstances out of their control, but those are the rules of incumbency, the rough with the smooth.

Is 'far right' the correct description for anyone in the Conservative party? Surely Nazism is far right. Simply being in favour of not being in Europe does not make one a Nazi.

The electorate told the Labour party for 18 months that it did not want Jeremy Corbyn anywhere near Downing Street. The Labour party refused to listen and ended up with its worst electoral result since 1935. The electorate is currently telling the Tories exactly the same thing about Boris Johnson. We'll see if the Tories also decide that they know better.

Corbyn lost and then went on to lose again.
Gained seats and votes in 2017

    SO says electorate detested him

Reality the electorate detested him so much an extra 4 million voted for his party than at the previous GE

    VERY unconvincing.
Read the first paragraph or two.
Now is the perfect time for a VoNC it seems to me. Ukraine can't be used as an excuse anymore (that war is going to run and run I'm afraid) and the two By-Elections are only going to deliver bad news if Johnson stays.
The Jubilee is over, half term over and people back to work. Time for a clear out before the summer recess!

William will very probably get at least a silver.
Charles was nearly 34 when William was born, who was 31 when George was born, so silver jubilees will be more likely than not with such a generation length.

Good point. The Ukes love BJ and it would have the benefit of his defenestration not being seen as a total rejection of his Govt's record, which it shoudn't be as it is quite defensible. Would also help to suppress some of the bitterness of the fall-out. However not sure Boris would go for it. Would depend on who the successor is.

The MPs turned to Boris only when things got very desperate and they felt he was the only option to recover position and win a GE. They were right.

It would be very on brand for them to then junk him unceremoniously once they felt he was no longer needed.

I dont expect it, but it has logic.
Boris did what he was put there to do.

But its done now. That's not a reason to keep him.

If a team fighting against relegation sacks the Manager and brings in a specialist Manager that knows how to win relegation scraps manages to avoid relegation, then that's job done - but if you then want to go on to do well in the League you might look to move on from that Manager and find a new one afterwards.

Johnny Rotten is now, apparently, a full time carer for his ailing wife

When I heard that it made me existentially sad, partly because it is sad for them, but also because it made me feel about 128 years old
There was a fantastic interview with Lydon on BBC Radio Scotland ‘Off the Ball’ last weekend (I think it was the Saturday show). He talked about Arsenal and Highbury obviously (it is after all a football show), but also very movingly about his wife and the role sport and music play for people suffering her illness. Huge respect to the man.

I noticed Dan Hannah - an intelligent Brexiteer - was talking about the Single Market at the weekend. He wasn’t suggesting we should rejoin, but the mere fact he used the words is intriguing

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2022/06/04/should-have-stayed-single-market-rejoining-now-would-madness/

With Boris gone it will be easier to have that much-delayed debate as to what Brexit should do, and what it can’t do. Tho whether the Tories are capable of that debate is a different matter

I dont get the 'moved too soon' argument. If someone is still for him the by elections wont change their minds. It might not succeed, but it's been rumbling for months, it was time to put up.

I don't see how a coronation is possible. After IDS a coronation was possible because Howard was the "old cardinal" who could be the Leader of the Opposition who'd take the forthcoming election defeat allowing the "young cardinals" to step forwards and have their own time afterwards.

Whoever replaces Boris is Prime Minister. No way will every contender step aside from that.
