Ok thanks - apols for my terse post, if I'd been following the thread your post would have made sense. But I made the mistake of watching the football.

The last thing you want as an England player is to make a tackle of commitment that gets you injured for the finals.

That said, you'd still rather expect the quality of passing would be much better - and generate the odd shot on target,

Really? Penelope Kieth, Richard Bowles? Huge in the late 1970s.

I don’t know who they are. Before my time.

The 1970’s are half a century ago :open_mouth:

I know the phrase ‘to the manner born’
Been on TV many times since then. You are something of an Enigma. Kids that can be left while you write books in Norway, so adult, but doesn’t remember the late seventies (or re-runs in the eighties). Uses a stick to beat people off in supermarkets.
I guess we all have our knowledge gaps - music is mine. So often on PB reports that X or Y has died and I have no idea who they are.
Music used to be one of my specialist subjects, I just looked at the current top 20 singles and the only one I know (by artist/title) is Houdini by Eminem, that is a new entry at #1.

    https://www.officialcharts.com/charts/uk-top-40-singles-chart/
Other than Eminem, I heard #4 (A bar song (Tipsy)) for the first time earlier today, my wife asked me to play it while driving which was a challenge with the speech recognition as at first it just played a random bar song playlist instead.

Both my wife and I love #10 (Austin), that's a lot of fun and one I regularly play.

My wife likes #19 (Beautiful Things) so I listen to that a few times, I'm not too fussed with it.

The rest of the Top 20 I don't recognise. But then again a lot of the music I stream is new[ish] but may never have made the Top 20 in this country, music like other entertainment forms is a lot more diverse nowadays, we don't all listen to the same things.
    Interesting.

There’s probably a handful I’d know to listen to, but wouldn’t know artist and title - but I don’t listen to a lot of music radio any more, preferring talk stations and podcasts on long journeys, or doing down a random YouTube music rabbithole which tends to suggest older songs that I know anyway.

I’d love to know what the radio edit of the Eminem track sounds like, because the video edit is definitely not anywhere close to radio-friendly.

Farage’s stat on the number of people paying the 40p rate is remarkable if true.

I'm now in the 40p rate and I'm completely fine with it, I earn a decent wedge and happy to pay my fair share. I believe the old line "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs" is a good one to follow.
Don’t forget that your employer is paying 13.8% NI on top of your salary for the privilege of employing you. Real income tax rates on employment are punishingly high in this country, especially for those making student loan payments (effectively a graduate tax), for whom the marginal rate (assuming a higher rate tax payer & including employers NI) is approx 63%. Even more if you’re paying off a post-grad loan as well.

We have become a high tax country with shitty public services.
Since when does the employers NI reduce your disposable income?
Since always. Its a direct tax on wages, which means firms pay lower wages as a result as they budget the tax as part of their costs.

Tax on wages are far too high in this country.
Tax on unearned incomes are far too low.

Working for a living should never be taxed any higher than making a living through means other than working.
I appreciate your naïve assumption that employers wouldn't just trouser any tax savings. Employers pay people as little as they can get away with.
So why isn't everyone on minimum wage ?

Because the demand for workers forces employers to pay more.

Ultimately the demand for workers pushes up wage rates to the point where it no longer becomes profitable to employ them.

Employers NI merely reduces the amount that the employee gets not what the employer is willing to pay.
If someone is willing to work for £x, has there been a situation where the manager has said "You're doing great, we'll pay you more money for exactly the same job" Employers look at retention rates and what the competition is offering to decide what to pay their employees.
    Unless you're the government.
All jobs when advertised should have the total remuneration including the pension contribution advertised. It would make public sector jobs look a lot more competitive

private sector 30k+1.5k pension contribution vs
public sector 25k+ 5k pension contribution

especially when the private sector contribution is to a defined contribution scheme which means they will likely get very little and the public sector contribution ends up with an indexed linked average final salary
Depends on the role. Prior to a regrading exercise my salary was something like 75% of the amount I'd have gotten for an equivalent role in industry even with the pension. Since then it's pretty much what I'd expect. The government still lives in a world where STEM roles are graded the same as clerical.
And teaching assistants the same as cleaners.
I am not saying its always the same, just mentioning that often public sector roles are not as underpaid as they seem due to the hidden pension contributions from the employer
Not much bloody use when you can't pay the bills right now.
No but was always the case the public sector got lower pay now for the expectations of better pensions later. My father is typical of this he complains how low his pay was when he was working but his public sector pension is 20 odd k a year
A CS pension is a genuinely good benefit but it has been eroded over the years (still better than my shitty DC pensions though) and the combined benefits package has become seriously uncompetitive. You can't expect senior software engineers to work for £30k, even if there's another £8k of pension contribution thrown in there. It's unreasonable to try to get an IP lawyer worth their chops with 10 years experience for £40k. I was a hair from leaving until someone in BEIS was uncharacteristically intelligent and introduced new grades for in-demand roles.
My father however wasnt in one of those high paying jobs he was just a general type maintenance guy, despite his claims of low pay he could still buy a house etc and afford to goto the pub every night throught his working life and take holidays. I on the other hand in real terms have probably earned more than him all my life, paid more pension contributions than him in real terms over my life. I still am renting an my dc pension will be half what he gets and non index linked

To the manor born could be "I didn't buy my own furniture".

That is more recent - 1980s .

TBF the BBC programme was 1979, so is really 1980s for most of it.

Sitcom, a Posh lady who's aristocratic husband died, and she moved to the gatehouse, and a nouveau riche business type who had made his money in supermarkets moved in. Their developing relationship and events.

A bit like the management at the Spectator or Telegraph rotating every few years, really.

Well, we shall see. But the denouement of the last European Championship - at home, not conceding a single goal for the whole tournament, and still managing to throw it in a penalty shootout - does not inspire confidence. For whatever reason, the men's team seems utterly incapable of winning anything.
Odd, I thought Italy scored in the final?
I get your point. Something not right in the killer instinct. In the WC against Croatia they needed the second goal and didn’t get it. Against Italy they needed the second goal and … we know the rest.
    My bad, I'm misremembering, 1-1 not 0-0.

I just find it mystifying. This is not a team bereft of talent. By any objective measure, Southgate has done better than any England manager since you-know-when. But the wheels always, always fall off.

Too Sweet by Hozier is very good but otherwise it’s a bit not on my radar. All I know about Sabrina Carpenter is she looks like a human lollipop, tiny body huge head, who is seeing the cum drinker from saltgate, can’t comment on her songs. Although Vampire or Drivers licence by the sainted Olivia Rodrigo is about her, Sabrina Carpenter, stealing her ex I believe.

I had a browse through. I recognised a few but I could only actually remember "Without Me" and the Disturbed cover of "Sound of Silence". Both of which are from my younger years. There's a good research paper I saw that graphed music score vs age you were when the music was released and there's a very clear filter effect from old music (slightly higher rating for stuff released 20 years before you were born), a big peak in your teens and then it falls off a cliff. I guess we all stay teenagers when it comes to music.

I know! Schoolboy error from me. Trying to wind up Heathener who is somehow about 70 and 17 at the same time. It’s not like To The Manor Born is an obscure TV series. It’s one from the classics of the age, and as has been said, both stands up well AND is an interesting social/historical commentary.

Richard De Vere was also in Pretty Woman.

Pretty Woman, by the way, was released closer to the time that Anthony Eden was PM than to today.
Well that at least makes sense.
    As MRD might have said.

But that's true of many jobs then and now.

The Treasury was always *very* careful to reduce civil service salaries to compensate for the pension scheme, set against general market comparators.

I don’t think England will win the Euros, but I don’t think this match bears any relation to how we will play in 9 days time.

But then alll but one team eventually loses in every tournament. Wining international football tournaments is HARD. Other teams get a vote.

Something interesting I spotted during the debate. A bit of a Molotov-Ribbentrop vibe between Rayner and Cooper.

Every other participant criticised Labour. Daisy didn’t. Rayner hit back at Flynn, Farage and (briefly) the green and the Plaid man, but not at Daisy.

Daisy said how we need more community police officers. When Angela said the same thing she looked over to Daisy in acknowledgement of who said it first.

Very unlike the Lib-Lab relationship of 2010-2019.

Probably suits the Tory 'truthful' campaign in the Blue Wall - send proper opposition to Westminster not Labour's little helpers
If you were Tory, think the Party has gone the wrong direction, but can't bring yourself to vote Labour that would be precisely the message for you.

Yes absolutely that situation happens all the time, whenever that employers competitors are offering £x+y then the employer can't afford to only offer £x unless they want to lose all of their good employees.

    As you acknowledge, competition exists.

Currently the competition has to price in NI, which means they reduce wages proportionately as its a direct cost to them for employing someone. Remove employers NI and the competition can afford to pay more, which when we have full employment means only one thing.
I don't think the employment market works that effectively, at least it doesn't at the lower wage levels in my experience. I spent over a decade in one job at around £25k/year before realising that I was being underpaid, left for another job, my old employer advertised what was effectively my old job for £35k and within 3 years I was earning £50k.

As an employer I absolutely would take NI into account when determining what we could afford to pay.

If I did not, then HMRC would still demand their money and failing to pay it would not be an option.

Direct taxes affect prices, always have done, always will do. Suggesting Employers NI doesn't affect wages is as preposterous as saying fuel duty or alcohol duty doesn't affect fuel or alcohol prices.
Sure, but most businesses will group ER NICs along with other overheads such as pension contribution, healthcare, dental, optical, fertility, childcare, laptop & IT, rent etc. It's certainly a factor in determining whether it's profitable to do business in a particular location, but much less so for deciding whether it's profitable to employ a particular person.

I’d love to know what the radio edit of the Eminem track sounds like, becuase the video edit is definitely not anywhere close to radio-friendly.
I don't listen to any radio at all, I stream music while I'm driving.

The streaming app discovers new music for us based on what we play and what we skip etc - the funny thing with streaming is then a lot of music we discover is popular in eg America or Canada or Australia but not really made it here.

My wife discovers a lot more new music than I do, mainly from the fact she's on TikTok and I'm not. She really loves an American artist called Noah Kahan who seems to have recently made it here too.

My favourite new artists at the moment are all foreign female soloists oddly enough. Peach PRC, Jax, Taylor Acorn etc - all from abroad AFAIK and not even sure if any of them are played on the radio here or not.

I know! Schoolboy error from me. Trying to wind up Heathener who is somehow about 70 and 17 at the same time. It’s not like To The Manor Born is an obscure TV series. It’s one from the classics of the age, and as has been said, both stands up well AND is an interesting social/historical commentary.
I can't drag anyone for not knowing a series that is considered a classic. I'd never seen Seinfeld until recently. It was ok.

More and more teens and young adults are however going to older bands, went out with my father the other day to his local and the barmaid we both know had on a green day tshirt because she prefer the older bands and she is just 20, likewise my 30 year old son is into acdc, foofighters, motorhead, hawkwind, rush and pink floyd

It technically doesn't, but there is an argument to make that if (say) an employer wants to employ someone, and has a budget of £50,000 per year to spend, the logical choice is to build the Employers NI into that offer.

So the employee is offered £45k (or whatever) and then takes home about £30k.

From a purely financial point of view, £50k leaves the firm but the employee only gets 60% of that. A dishonest politician will then point to the employee only paying 20% tax, when in reality its more like 40%.

This situation gets worse the higher your salary goes, with some truly terrible marginal rates (like for myself) when you claim child benefit (which my wife gets - and I repay) where I'm probably losing around about 75% at the marginal between £50k to £60k. [1]

[1] Yes I'm an accountant, and no I haven't worked it out. And yes, as an accountant you'd think I bloody well should, but I'm just making a point.

Its absolutely a factor in determining wages and whether to employ someone, especially for smaller firms that have to concentrate on all costs.

A larger firm may lump it into overheads for accounting purposes but they'll factor it in when budgeting for how much they need to spend on overheads (to cover it) and how much they can spend on wages, again if they didn't then when HMRC came knocking they'd go out of business, so they have to.

I was being ever so serious. Heathener is suitably strong, apparently accomplished and confident to give it out and take it back - it would probs be more sexist to think anyone had to rein it in because she’s a she.
Yeah I don’t have a problem with you calling it out. But what is to the manor born?

I’d love to know what the radio edit of the Eminem track sounds like, becuase the video edit is definitely not anywhere close to radio-friendly.
I think that's probably not a representative sample. I used to think that when I listened to Bruce Springsteen, ABBA and The Rolling Stones when I was a kid but turns out I was the odd one out there. I also used to think the 80s was a bad time for music; which outranks libertarianism as my number one cringe teenage belief.

It was ok.
But the point is you had heard of it.

Richard De Vere was also in Pretty Woman.

Pretty Woman, by the way, was released closer to the time that Anthony Eden was PM than to today.
I don’t care if that is true. It’s wonderful like the fact that on a time basis it’s more accurate to depict a human to being mauled by a T-Rex than a stegosaurus.
    Alas, it's actually true
    Eden 1957 -> Pretty Woman 1990 -> Now 2024
    33 years, 34 years.

The "debates" are completely useless. You're not going to get a proper discussion save in a format that has a small number of participants and a lot of time, more than modern attention spans will tolerate.

You might learn slightly more from the Question Time specials, but not that much more.

I like how all the OnlyFans references were ok but "ghastly woman" was somehow noteworthy
I was being ever so serious. Heathener is suitably strong, apparently accomplished and confident to give it out and take it back - it would probs be more sexist to think anyone had to rein it in because she’s a she.
Yeah I don’t have a problem with you calling it out. But what is to the manor born?
Really? Penelope Kieth, Richard Bowles? Huge in the late 1970s.
Peter Bowles was in TTMB with Penelope
Richard Briars was in the Good Life with Penelope
It was ok.
But the point is you had heard of it.
Sure, but I'd also argue that Seinfeld was a bigger phenomenon than TTMB.

    My take on the debate.

    Daisy Cooper was good.

Mordaunt did ok with what she was working with. Hard to make a silk purse of a sows ear. Struggled at times but still one of the better Tory performers.

Farage - par. Not a terrible performance , but didn’t knock it out of the park.

Rayner played less of a role than I expected, but won’t have caused any problems, so advantage Labour.

All the others - a bit nondescript and crap really.

    This made me laugh.

President Biden did not mention Trump once. He did, however, speak about the dangers of fascism and the importance of protecting democracy.

    Trumpers are telling on themselves.

    Also LOL.

On tonight’s showing I’m rather surprised Penny Mordaunt didn’t keep interrupting the King when he was doing the coronation oath.

Do you only know about things that have happened in your lifetime?
Most people know things that happened in their lifetime better, yes.

I know To the Manor Born as it was still getting repeated in the 90s when I was a teen, but I wouldn't expect anyone younger than me to know it.
It's sometimes shown on BBC2 on Tuesday evenings along with Yes Minister.
Yes, but how many young people watch BBC on Tuesday evenings?

I haven't watched live TV in years. My kids pretty much never have and probably never will.
    You never watch live sport?
Sky Sports was the last live TV I watched about two years ago.

Cancelled my Sky subscription when we moved a couple of years ago, I got pissed off that about half the games I wanted to watch with my subscription weren't available to watch with it and an alternative method of streaming them was required so eventually just started streaming all rather than half.

Now I just stream sport. Probably best not to say how.

I’d love to know what the radio edit of the Eminem track sounds like, becuase the video edit is definitely not anywhere close to radio-friendly.
When I was a kid it was an oddity, we all knew one, according to most young people I know there is a large percentage of them that prefer the golden oldies
For example I have an american friend and her 14 year old daughter often jumps on skype with us and she is always asking for music recommendations and the other night the three of us did jethro tull, hawkwind, faun and damh the bard for an hour or two according to her mother she is digging into their bibliography ever since as she was blown away

Useless. The team, not the supporters.

Anyone who thought this lot had a chance of winning that tournament should take note of this limp surrender at home to a nation with a population approximately equal to that of Coventry.

    Not a bloody prayer.
It’s a soddingvwarm up game. It’s like pre season friendlies. Someone commented on Monday that they really should be played behind closed doors.

I don’t think England will win the Euros, but I don’t think this match bears any relation to how we will play in 9 days time.
Well, we shall see. But the denouement of the last European Championship - at home, not conceding a single goal for the whole tournament, and still managing to throw it in a penalty shootout - does not inspire confidence. For whatever reason, the men's team seems utterly incapable of winning anything.
Basic problem is that while the attack has improved hugely, the defence has declined due to injuries and age. Not overly Southgate's fault a raft of promising defenders have got injured or gone backwards. And it's easier to thwart a strong attack with negativity than it is to keep teams out with a substandard defence when you're having to play on the front foot.

Does anyone agree with me that it will slightly take the shine off a big Labour win if the Tories and RefUK combined get more votes than Labour? For example if it's Lab 40%, Con 25%, Ref 16%.

It was ok.
But the point is you had heard of it.
Sure, but I'd also argue that Seinfeld was a bigger phenomenon than TTMB.
Not in the U.K. The final episode was watched by 27 million viewers. Twenty-seven million.
27 million viewers for one of merely 20 episodes half a century ago doesn't trump millions of viewers week in, week out, for years when it was on over 180 episodes.

I'd definitely say Seinfeld was a far bigger phenomenon.

That's the problem with British TV over American TV, the American TV becomes a much bigger phenomenon not just because its American but because it goes on for much longer.

You were asking about Camberwell & Peckham, it's just Peckham now and Southwark Council were a bit tardy with the SOPN but there's a choice of 10 (TEN).

In terms of accuracy. that’s pretty marginal.
Though at least T-Rex was carnivorous.
OTOH stegosaurs had thagomizers. Not to be pissed off.

Does anyone agree with me that it will slightly take the shine off a big Labour win if the Tories and RefUK combined get more votes than Labour? For example if it's Lab 40%, Con 25%, Ref 16%.

Labour would probably have the biggest majority in living memory, or dead memory come to that. That will be the story nobody will much care about vote share, apart from nerds and wonks.

I’d love to know what the radio edit of the Eminem track sounds like, becuase the video edit is definitely not anywhere close to radio-friendly.
That's a fine set of music.
to be fair she plays an instrument and tull will always generally interest musicians

The information revolution has made the scene so much wider than what's on the shelf in a record store or Woolworths. It's easy to listen to 1930s dance bands or 1950s Congolese rumba, and to find out enough about them to become a fan. And to expose you to them in the first place, there are musicians like Leyland Kirby ("The Caretaker") and Bob Stanley (off Saint Etienne, turned historical pop music ephemerist par excellence).

No more than the shine is taken off a big Tory win if the Labour and Lib Dem votes combined are more than the Tory vote.

Tory 40%, Lab 25%, LD 16% is still a landslide Tory victory.

I remember the hype in the US around the last episodes of both MASH and Friends. There were parties and the whole weekend national news was dominated by the fact that a sitcom was ending.

That last episode of MASH is still the most watched episode of any TV series in US history. 121 Million people watched it.

In the largest town in traditionally Tory East Wiltshire (it's a new seat, the old (Michael Ancram) Devizes seat, but without Devizes and with a bit more of the army on Salisbury Plain), Marlborough, I have seen one big "Winning Here" sign, outside the LibDem candidate's house, and two Labour posters in windows

I have not seen a single thing promoting the Tories or Danny Kruger, even at the two Tory town councillor ladies' houses on my route. They did have a stall at the market last week, but it seemed rather quiet

The Lib Dem candidate, David Kinnaird, is ex-Army. He might well be able to win over the new Salisbury Plain bits of the constituency. I haven't talked to enough people to elevate my knowledge above anecdata, but I haven't spoken to anyone who has met met him who wasn't impressed by him

The consensus in my little focus group is that he'd be a fine representative for the constituency in Parliament

I don't think it's likely that he'll win, but he might be value. What are the odds for East Wiltshire (or is it Wiltshire East)?

Pretty sure we've got East Wiltshire, SW Wiltshire, and Salisbury covered on here, let's see if we can get posters to cover all Wiltshire.
    @Malmesbury ?
Haven't been back there in the last couple of years. So I don't know the local mood. My guess would be the same split is there - the locals are looking Reform'y, the incomers very Lib Dem.

I’d love to know what the radio edit of the Eminem track sounds like, becuase the video edit is definitely not anywhere close to radio-friendly.
When I was a kid it was an oddity, we all knew one, according to most young people I know there is a large percentage of them that prefer the golden oldies
Oh I agree a lot of what I listen to now I would never have found as a kid, my only source of alternative music was either john peel or taking a risk and buying an album that looked interesting in meat whiplash

Penny Mordaunt is hectoring and constantly interrupting. Really hope she loses her seat. Ghastly woman.

Less of the misogyny please, referring to her sex as a derogatory point is beneath you. You could have said “ghastly person” but ghastly woman is so loaded with some retro sexist memories of “to the manor born” and all that.

In the U.K. I’d definitely argue TTMB was bigger. Seinfeld was shown on Ch4, what were its audiences like in the U.K.? Globally yes Seinfeld is bigger, but that wasn’t my point. My point was that I cannot believe the Heathener character (aged 17/70) has not even heard of it.
TTMB was bigger in the 70s.

I'd say Seinfeld was bigger in the 90s in the UK. Just a guess, be curious to see the data.

For anyone under 30 I'd expect to have heard of Seinfeld being more probable than TTMB, but it would be close as Seinfeld itself is also pretty niche nowadays.

Now if you said Friends or TTMB it wouldn't even be close. Friends all day, every day for anyone under 30.

    Also LOL.

On tonight’s showing I’m rather surprised Penny Mordaunt didn’t keep interrupting the King when he was doing the coronation oath.

Going on the Sunak performance it’s clearly a tactic. Some American GOP apparatchik has been hired by the Tories to strategise the debates, and they’ve convincingly explained how you need to disrupt the opposition with constant interruptions to deny them the flow. It probably has a name, a bit like the Gish Gallop.

Are Reclaim standing anywhere? I saw that they are offering £5k to any candidate of any party that will agree to their 4 key policies.

I get confused between them all. Reform, Reclaim, Rebound, Resuscitate, Regurgitate, Repatriate.

    Repeat ad infinitum
Is that the conspiracy brigade that Lawrence Fox fronts?
I know it is Fox's mob but I honestly don't know what they stand for. Have they ever made that clear or is it just another vanity project?
I think it's basically conspiracy twitter copy-pasted into a pdf. Gay nazi communists are putting sex-change chemicals in the vaccines sort of unhinged drivel.
    No no no.

Nazi gay islamic jewish communists are putting the sex-change chemicals in the *water*. The vaccines make you magnetic.

I have certainly pulled more since my Moderna.

Same age as me pretty much, so would definitely know TTMB…

I remember the hype in the US around the last episodes of both MASH and Friends. There were parties and the whole weekend natinal news was dominated by the fact that a sitcom was ending.

That last episode of MASH is still the most watched episode of any TV series in US history. 121 Million people watched it.
The last episode of MASH is haunting, it deserves its ratings. Like the last episode of Blackadder Goes Forth.

The "chicken" on the bus has to be one of the most chilling moments of TV I've ever seen.

Having seen one or two clips, and from the seeming 'it was all crap' annoyance from our more left-inclined posters, can we chalk this up to a victory for the Faragegasm?

Tories looking like value in Leicester East - area is getting more Hindu, which as a demographic is going Conservative, Hindu candidate, Hindu PM, 3* unknown Indies, Labour (living in London), Webbe, Vaz, Lab, LD, and Greens all standing. Floor of 35 odd percent should be enough.

Does anyone agree with me that it will slightly take the shine off a big Labour win if the Tories and RefUK combined get more votes than Labour? For example if it's Lab 40%, Con 25%, Ref 16%.

No, of course it would not.

No more than the shine is taken off a big Tory win if the Labour and Lib Dem votes combined are more than the Tory vote.

Tory 40%, Lab 25%, LD 16% is still a landslide Tory victory.
Lab 40%, Tory 25%, Refuk 16% is still a landslide Labour victory.
Yes we have FPTP so voteshares are irrelevant, it is the lead of first placed party over the second that determines the majority of seats.

If we had PR then minor parties voteshares would matter too and they would get seats accordingly but we don't
