The risk was always that the amateurs would be crushed by the more experienced Sunak.

The sad thing is, he has no plan for the country whatsoever. The others are at least aware the country needs a reboot.

It's hardly inspiring, but being a competent manager would be better than a really crappy reboot.

IDK, there's something about Sunak that just doesn't sit right with me. Must be presentational, as what he says is usually well put together at least.

    Betfair since debate start.

    Penny stable at 2.08.

    Truss 4.1 (was 3.7)

    Sunak 4.3 (was 4.7)

    So Sunak winning, Truss losing.

Maybe after all that it will be a choice between Sunak and Badenoch.

That would be hilarious, given how it would require the others to drop quite a few MPs.

I'm up to Tom talking about pushing things out the regions. Please just stop - its in all parties manifestoes every election but either never happens or happens in half arsed fashion. You all will want to centralise, just do that and do it well.

This is a catastrofuck for the Tories. We are seeing just how drained the talent pool is. And they have spent this week going after various desperate bets - PENNIES FROM HEAVEN!!! And she's already demolished herself. Truss? A zombie and delusional when she coms out of her Thatcher seance.

So. Sunak. vs either Kemi or Tuggy.

Tugendhat isn't about to do a Lazarus, but if Truss is as transparently awful as the whole of PB is suggesting then Badenoch just might.

But most likely she goes as well, in which case I think she'll probably throw in her lot with Sunak.

I suspect there has been a sigh of relief in Chez Starmer today. Penny has been poor.

So on to the debate, Rishi has been very polished, I am impressed with his presentation. Tommy Tugs is doing well and saying it as it is, ocassionally floudering. Badenoch, a little nervous, but quite strident and impressive. Penny struggling and Truss, absolutely FOS.
Sunak is SUCH a phoney. I downmark every PBer who falls for his shtick

Sell Mordaunt: I think she’ll be disappointing her supporters. Sunak attacking her now very effectively.

Buy Badenoch as a trading bet. I still think she’s one for the future and will ultimately trade her success so far for a nice Cabinet position. She’s effective 2/3 of the time…

    Buy Sunak.

    Rishi - better than expected
    TT - solid
    Kemi - good
    Penny - disappointing
    Truss - dire.

I don’t think anyones going to be able to keep me voting Tory at the next election on these performances. Well, Kemi might, but she won’t get it.

So look, this is sooooo bad that the blue team really can't wait through the summer (as the government are on work to rule), or risk that the deviated old preverts that form the Tory membership choose one of the really awful candidates.

So can the MPs just do a Sunak pile on so we can have him PM by this time next week? Please?
  • GardenwalkerGardenwalker Posts: 21,295
    Rishi is very polished.
    He always has been.

I’ll never forget how well he delivered his fiscal statement as Covid started, which he had to revise about two seconds later.

He may be “across the detail” and “worried about the deficit”, but he has a born-to-rule arrogance and has been one of the less competent Chancellors - probably because he spent much of his time getting the right filters on his Instagram posts.

    He is a “hollow man”.
  • Penny I was a big fan of before tonight but I'm afraid she's proved the Mail right, she really is a complete lightweight.
  • Might be difficult to assess betting odds here as to how a reasonably normal, intelligent person might react to the candidates, vs a) Tory MPs, b) Tory party members. E.g. the latter, when offered a choice between Ken Clarke and Ian Duncan Smith, chose Smith.... (not exactly electoral dynamite).
  • LeonLeon Posts: 55,039
Sunak is the most polished, in a predictable way. His trouble is, Truss is so bad he will surely be facing Mordaunt or Badenoch (and probably Mordaunt). And I still think he loses that one

Based on what we've seen, Truss, who I've backed, and Penny, who I haven't, risk be an embarrassing choice for the party and the country. Rishi so much better than both of them. Kemi remains an interesting outsider. TiT has no path to number 10 - so is irrelevant.

I've had more on Rishi at 4.3 for next Tory leader.

I’ve finally realized my issue with Sunak. He reminds me of Blair too much. On the one hand a serial winner, on the old hand a slimy supercilious turd.

Close your eyes, he is Blair. You cannot unhear it
Fine. Blair is better than any of the hot garbage from the last 12 years.

    Lay Truss kids.

    She's hopeless in this format

Will Truss show up on Sunday night? Or send Boris as her stand in aka alter ego?

    Rishi
    Tom
    Kemi
    Penny

Truss has be the worst potential PM of the last fifty years.

You cannot be serious. Corbyn. And Labour put him up twice.

    But she’s still terrible.
There was no chance that Jezbollah become Prime Minister. Yet Truzz is in the running to be so in 2 months.

Penny and Liz doing a pincer movement against Rishi on tax and Tugendhat also said he would have voted against the NI rise

Yeah but he appears credible and they don't. Your party is out of its mind if he isn't Prime Minister by September.
Sunak isn't winning a GE IMO.
I don't think any of them are. But Sunak I think would probably avoid the culture wars and is vaguely competent.
Are you forgetting his performance as Chancellor? He has no answers to this cost of living crisis.

Rish annoying me with his hand movements. He's been studying old Tony Blair performances on YouTube hasn't he? ;)

Tom comes across as very knowledgable but rather world weary. Like an Oxford don who has seen it all and despairs that none of their ideas have ever been taken up.

I quite like it, but I doubt I am typical.

Biggest loser given her position in the betting is Penny.

Probably inevitable because she had nothing to gain and a huge amount to lose. She was popular by being an unknown quantity that people could project their hopes onto. Inevitable that if she doesn't smash it out of the park that bubble would pop.
