As predicted the victory by the 18 year old from Bromley, Emma Raducanu, has seen her shoot up in December’s election for the 2021 BBC Sports Personality of the Year and is now rated as a 90% chance by Betfair punters, Her victory late last night led to Tweets from the Palace, Number 10 and even Vote Leave and no doubt this is a young lady whom we are going to hear a lot more about.

    Lay her.

I'm as confident about this lay as I was when I was laying Donald Trump for the GOP nomination in 2016.

Labour has warned that there is “more work to do” to build tolerance in Scotland after a poll found more than twice as many voters would regard increased immigration from Muslim countries as bad for the country rather than a good thing.

The latest Panelbase survey for The Sunday Times found that about one in five (19 per cent) believe that the possibility of about 10,000 people from majority Muslim countries into Scotland each year for the next five years would be a positive development. However, 44 per cent said they would view it negatively while 37 per cent would consider it to be neither negative nor positive.

It turns out jacking up taxes and squeezing wages may not be a smart idea. Funny that.

Just been shopping and the price of petrol has now hit the highest I've ever seen. Just as lots of families are famously losing £20 per week. Now is the moment that Boris thought it a great idea to take more money out of our wages.

He doesn't deserve our vote and neither do the Tories, until they realise that wages are for people to keep to spend on what they need and not simply due to the Treasury to pay for those who aren't working.

Well, I might not put it quite that way, but if we take Covid then if the government had just done what the public wanted we'd not have unlocked in August, and and yet the outcome, far from the disaster some predicted, shows the government was right and voters were wrong.

I'm starting to think all political 'advisers' these days spend far too much time on Twitter and not enough time in the real world. Both the Government's and Labour's advisers are pretty crap.
I think they may spend their time going round in circles pontificating, when things usually are pretty simple. And 'tax rises are unpopular, as is government generally mid term' is a simple thing that they overreact to.

It was a good Olympics and very good para Olympics for the UK but I can't help feeling that the breadth of our success and medals made it much more difficult for individuals to stand out in the way than an Olympic gold medallist would have in the past.

To me this looks as nailed on as anything can be. We have a new superstar in our midst. Young, very smart, articulate, pretty and a winner. What's not to like?

Not just standing out, there is also an expectations issue for the Olympic athletes. People have become used to seeing us win 20-30 gold medals every 4 years. In the aftermath of 1996 it was a much, much bigger deal seeing a Team GB athlete on the top step. In 2021 after huge success in Beijing, London and Rio it's much less of a big deal.

Expectations for women's tennis are extremely low in this country. We haven't had a truly world class female tennis player since Virginia Wade. Ending that 44 year wait will be a huge factor and Emma Raducanu is odds on favourite for this reason IMO.

I know, it’s terrible. I just bought a new car too, and it has a 75 litre tank. Cost me the best part of £40 to fill it up! (Including a tip to the attendant). ;)

A pint of beer is a tenner out here though, so swings and roundabouts…
  • i also think with covid there was an element of the restrictions causing the fear...ie seeing everyhting closed and masks all over made things seem apocolyptic and increased the publics fear. It is amazing how fear levels have declined with everything open even though objectively there is a lot of covid still around

Ways for Raducanu not to win SPoTY, in order of increasing certainty:
    - publicly renounce her British citizenship
    - say something outrageously racist/homophobic

Still sitting this one out though. Closest I got to a bet was on Daley just after he won gold as I thought he'd likely come in as it reached the news reports and papers with a view to laying later (he did, I should have, but nevermind)

What did they expect ? Surely they have advisers who would have been able to foresee this.
I honestly don't think they did see it, the Tory party just seems to have forgotten how difficult it is to be a young worker on £18-40k all over the country. They've become the party of the comfortable and wealthy (people like me, ostensibly) who have no social conscience (so really only people like HYFUD). No one at the top table has any insight into the life of a 20 or 30 something living in a shared house paying shit loads in rent from income that is taxed far too much and is therefore unable to get on the property ladder.

  • Alex Salmond is telling Alba delegates about all of the things that the SNP haven't done while in power such as reducing poverty or gaining a foothold in the renewable energy sector.

It may come as a shock to him who exactly was First Minister between 2007 and 2014

    https://twitter.com/conor_matchett/status/1437079743220830209?s=20

In a dig at Nicola Sturgeon, Alex Salmond says the record of the SNP/Green government on education, health, the economy and local government is “at its very kindest mediocre”.

He adds: “So is it’s record on the pandemic.”

This new Alex Salmond seems to have a very low opinion of the party led by the old Alex Salmond #Alba21

The problem with focus groups is that I suspect they are great at getting people aged 40+ willing to talk for an hour for £40 or so.

What they can't do is find people younger than that as they are either hiding, working or can't see any reason why they need to do it in person.

Saying that it wouldn't surprise me if they recruitment uses Facebook or Twitter neither of which are significant sites for younger people..

What they do understand is electoral dynamics, and a coalition centred on the old and comfortable that reaches out into the old and precarious (by culture war) and the younger and comfortable (don't worry, you'll still get your inheritance) is pretty damn formidable.

Is that new? There are echoes of Theresa May's complaints about the trustafarians around David Cameron having lost touch with the parties JAM (just about managing) supporters in the country, and also with New Labour losing touch with its roots (what we would now call the red wall seats).

By and large the people running the country are from a very narrow clique who know each other socially or from school or even old romantic entanglements. It is like 1960 or even 1910 in some ways.

Seems a bit theatrical for a planned reshuffle or even trouble with the vote this week. It smells more like heading off a story that is about to break.

It's much less formidable than they think, without working people aged between 30 and 50 a majority is out of reach and people in this age category aren't inheriting anything for another 10-30 years at least.

At least 3 members I know personally who campaigned for Leave in 2016 and Boris in 2019 have cancelled their membership and won't vote for the Tories until Boris is gone and the scope of this tax is widened to include retired people and unearned income. That's people who paid to campaign for the Tories for many years abandoning the party. Voters will be even less forgiving.

Lap 1 - Verstappen leaves Hamilton no space, so Hamilton takes to the runoff. Hamilton does leave Verstappen space and the **** decides to ram into the side of Hamilton.

As it did at-sea replenishment a few days ago, it's probably out at sea. Don't know if that's in service, training, or trials:

edit: a couple of years ago I was at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard whilst PoW was in dock. Even from a distance, the scale of the thing was amazing. Those two ships are impressive in scale.

As an aside, 11 years ago we got married on HMS Warrior. My dad asked to drive the bride to the ship, as it meant driving his car through the proper naval dockyard, for which he had an armed escort. He enjoyed that immensely!
  • I think it would result in better politics if certain things were more openly presented. Here are two suggestions:

    1. All salaries (inc. adverts and payslips) expressed as both cash and total benefit with the pension contribution value set using a standard formula prescribed by independent body and varying as required to give accurate representation. The real cost and benefit of defined benefit pensions would be stated NOT the contributions. Employer's NI also shown clearly.

    2. Hypothicate NHS, pension and social security parts of personal taxation. NHS totally funded from the personal tax elements apart from relevant sin taxes so that payslip show £XX to NHS as part of ZZ% funding from personal taxes.

The main thing is to make things more apparent and to educate the electorate in the realities of life.
  • The announcement Campbell was editing the book was greeted by a cheer almost as loud as the one that welcomed Salmond.

No one at the top table has any insight into the life of a 20 or 30 something living in a shared house paying shit loads in rent from income that is taxed far too much and is therefore unable to get on the property ladder.
Just thinking about my time as a graduate student and young professional in rented accommodation ranging from good to cold & damp (though I got out of that last shared house before the loo fell into the kitchen). 3-4 years of work but with some luxuries* meant accumulating a deposit with a little help from M&D and buying a house on my own admittedly in a not very expensive area - but not a bad one at all: quite trendy.

How on earth would I have felt freezing in the winters if I had 30+ more years of the same?

    *Not avocado.

In terms of the key people, Rishi doesn't understand black of money and Boris doesn't understand money at all.

What they do understand is electoral dynamics, and a coalition centred on the old and comfortable that reaches out into the old and precarious (by culture war) and the younger and comfortable (don't worry, you'll still get your inheritance) is pretty damn formidable.

Retired people who are giving up a 5.5% rise in pensions? So a contribution of about £393 so equivalent to the 1.25% on someone earning just over £31k

    Seems pretty fair to me
    Grotesque.

They're 'giving up' a notional rise which is more or less proportional to the economic misery younger people have suffered to protect them.
    Economic misery.. laughable.

    True this and on topic.

Given the contempt most people on here have for the US judicial system, this is a surprising post.
  • F1: worth recalling that the stewards have previously said that the outcome of an incident (referring to Silverstone) does not have an impact on any ruling regarding the incident itself.

This is an Iran vs. Iraq moment for me.

I'm utterly outraged by the defence being espoused by Prince Andrew and his defenders.

Prince Andrew's legal team could try to get sex abuse allegations against him by a victim of Jeffrey Epstein thrown out of court by saying he had diplomatic immunity because he was a trade envoy at the time, it has been claimed.

Top US lawyer Spencer Kuvin suggested that Andrew's legal team may claim the Duke of York - who was a trade envoy in 2001, when Virginia Giuffre alleges that he raped and sexually abused her - had immunity in America.

Yes, I'd hate to be facing a UK court - I'm not a lawyer, and it's not an environment I'm used to. I'd be sh*t-scared of a US court, even for a minor charge. My knowledge of the US laws and court system is essentially non-existent, and that would just add to the fear factor.

That's the rich pensioners. Look at the poor ones and for them this is like (not precisely the same as) cancelling the UC uplift. The state pension pays less than £10,000 a year and for those who depend on it as their only source of income, who aren't staying on in a cushy £60,000 office job or supplementing a private pension, the triple lock matters.

Everyone has the right to be considered innocent until proven guilty. And as much as we might not like it, lots of bad people get off on technicalities. Everyone has the right to use the law to their advantage.

True. But the intended effect of the Triple Lock remains, keeping pace with inflation or average earnings rises. Pensioners will get a rise. We have one-off statistical weirdness for a year thanks to pandemic and lockdown and so on.
  • Mr. 86, pressure on Prince Andrew would be significantly higher if it weren't for the Anne Sacoolas case. It's completely unfair that that matters, for some, but the obvious comparison is there to be made.

    But think of the optics.

Rather than rebut the allegations he's arguing you cannot charge him.

It is reminiscent of those MPs who were charged for fraud over their expenses trying to have the charged dismissed because only Parliament can take action against them.

I wonder if Raducanu might suffer from people thinking "she'll have plenty of changes to win SPoTY in years to come, let's give it to Tom Daley this year"?

I think her big problem is a lack of visibility.

She's not been on the TV as much of the other contenders.

Hang on, were those MPs in the right? And is Andrew in the right? If you're not in the right, then you look pretty stupid, but no one is obliged to prove their innocence.

Tell me, how do you feel about Cristiano Ronaldo? I thought that banner at OT yesterday was utterly despicable.
