If UKIP wins a seat in Scotland that would be the coping stone that cements UKIPs victory.

Con down only 3% in Newark & Sherwood but behind UKIP.

How does that area compare to Newark parliamentary seat?

UKIP probably did better in the Sherwood area which is a traditional Labour mining area, so the Tories were probably slightly ahead in Newark, but still all to play for in the by-election as long as UKIP weren't miles behind.

That UKIP have won Doncaster shows how significant their win in Newark is, in truth. It's a boost for them, but does anyone think EdM is at risk from a purple decapitation? No.

Doncaster - where Ed Miliband has his Doncaster North constituency - goes purple: Ukip 24,240; Labour 23,743; Tories 9,747 and the LD 1,869.

Remember David Herdson's post a week or so back?

If Labour now does come 3rd that result will be an absolute killer for Ed, even though he'll walk it at the GE.

They stood in national elections, winning 4.7%, lower than the 5% quota required. Other than being Eurosceptic, centre-right, fairly liberal (not been tested, of course). "It is anti-euro, but not anti-EU, and not against European unity" by choice. Wikipedia doesn't mention if their grouping has been decided, only that the Conservatives have courted them for the ECR.

1-2 is essentially no less pathetic than getting none, it's sheer luck in holding on just enough despite such a plummenting total. On the other hand, if they do manage to hold onto one in the SW, as apparently looks unlikely, for the first time my vote in an election, in sympathy, may actually have had an impact given how tight the margins might be.

Labour on the way to third place nationally after that result...

    How do you calculate?
Tories were 12% ahead of Lab in 2009. Looks like 1% now after 2 results. Lab need a 6% con-Lab swing to beat the Tories.

    Sky have voteshare C -2.8, Lab 8.2.

    Not enough.
Cheers Rod. So Labour around 24% nationally?
Lab on 24.3% based on Sky's +/- ticker.
    Con on 25.3%
Kellner reckons Labour are getting 2nd due to metropolitan strength.
We'll see about that. Labour could do very badly in places like Kent and Southampton.

Why wouldn't I? UKIP taking sizable votes in the Labour heartlands will not cost Labour as many seats as UKIP taking masses of votes in the Shires will prevent the Tories from taking the LD seat numbers they need to retain a plurality.

It really does look as though the Lib-Dems might actually come behind the Greens, LOL!!!!!

Being "the Party of In" and advertising it too! No-one wants the EU so Nick Clegg can sod off with his lies and distortions to justify it. The Great British public, at best, tolerate it, with a good half wanting to ditch it all together. How I love democracy, and how the wisdom of crowds triumphs over the vested interests ultimately. Mssrs Clegg, Cameron and Miliband, you can fool some of the people all the time and all the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time and you've been found out tonight.

The story of the evening is the rise of the far right and the threat of returning Europe to the politics of the 1930s.

Kipper apologists will claim the threat is mitigated in the UK: all they want to do is return us to the social values and demography of the 1950s.

Nope. Kippers will say you are a tw*t whose party has been hammered and who can now only fall back on smear as a last resort.

You lost. All your claims and smears about UKIP were ignored by the electorate and despite your best efforts UKIP have won handsomely.
Just as FN have won handsomely. Or Denmark's Peoples Party. Or Beppe Grillo's 5 Star party. Or Greece's Syriza and Golden Dawn parties.

Not one of the above parties, including UKIP, will ever form a national government.

You know that. I know that. Everyone knows that.

That is why the EP elections have become the Eurovision Comedian Competition.

    Who cares who loses?

    You lost.

    F** king get over it.

Grant Shapps falling over himself on BBC: 'people want us to re-double our efforts in doing what we're currently doing.'

Um... not quite, Grant. Have a think.

Has anyone heard of this Alternative in Germany? I have never heard of them. Where are they likely to sit in the Euro Parliament? Are they likely to form a group with UKIP? Are they more appropriate to sit with than the Front National?

The BBC had a little article about them a couple of weeks ago.
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-27341876

I thought they sounded quite sensible.
AfD are pro EU reform, anti exit. Opposed to Euro. Closer to the Conservatives than UKIP.

Yeah, but Germany actually have influence in the EU, so staying in might be more sensible to them.

Big wins for populist and eurosceptic parties across the EU, Syriza in Greece, Front National in France

I can hear the sound of marching jackboots already.

Of course, in the UK, given Farage's moderation, it will be marching carpet slippers.

If it were just UKIP then it would be ignored, but the success of other anti-centrist parties across Europe may well do so.

The rise of UKIP shows how European we are!

Hands-up who thinks the EU will listen to this verdict?

Well of course they'll listen to it. They just won't act on what is being said, because the problem is clearly people don't understand what is good for them, hence their little tantrum. The answer is clearly more Europe, when isn't it?
