As I said earlier today, I wonder if it was all part of the big clubs attempt to hard ball UEFA into a different champions league format, given the new CL announcement was set for the monday, but UEFA wouldn't budge and it either got leaked / they thought they throwing it out there as a threat that look we have done more than just claim we could do it....

One thing that suggests things weren't quite right, the announcement, weird leak on a Sunday afternoon and then delayed official announcement, with just a written statement and inconsistent briefing about the money etc. And the uncertainty of who was actually in and out.

You expect the announcement of a new super league to be all glitz and glamour and all the owners sitting their proudly signing on the dotted line. Yes there is COVID, but it wasn't what you expect from the announcement of what they were trying to say was going to be the biggest competition in world football.

Without starting this argument up again, PIF has not killed anyone. it's a corporate entity.

Regardless we all know Saudi Arabia is going to buy one of Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs, or Manchester United and it will be totally fine.
But PIF's top people helped violate the Premier League's TV rights in MENA.

Can you show me any other owners who have done that?

    It won't be.

The PL will not let the value of their rights be diminished.

Anyone who does that will not be able to buy a PL club.

Remember the WTO published a report which showed the Saudis had been launching all sorts of IP violations and rights violations and what did the Saudis do?

Published a fake report with WTO logos on it saying the WTO says the Saudis had done nothing wrong.

This was during the time they were trying to prove to the PL that they were fit and proper owners.
The PL's big 6 have seriously diminished the PL's rights all on their own and will likely face no sanctions.

I maintain that this whole thing is b*llocks and is just an attempt to avoid competition. Of course you as a Liverpool fan have a vested interest in reducing competition.

JJJ - a godawful self-promoting shyster. Told Progress that she was their candidate, then told Momentum she was their candidate. Was rejected as potential candidate for Stockton South in 2017 because shite. Imposed as mayoral candidate thanks to Unite backing and their team telling CLPs an incorrect version of selection rules to only shortlist her. When CLPs decided to follow the rules they simply had the other candidate disbarred for something written in support of a non-Labour candidate before he was a party member. She celebrates her "selection" by doing the same crime without penalty. So many of the local activists loathe her and the campaign materials put out are hilariously bad.
She’s a dreadful candidate., many in the party seem to openly mock her. Her only support seems to come from the Northern Echo Facebook feed with friendly articles receiving mostly criticism. One of her recent wheezes was to campaign with Jet from Gladiators to save the blast furnace in Redcar as a tourist attraction. Her main role seems to be running a quango promoting small producers of local food.

They march them up the hill and cause huge damage to them, they make them waste time thinking there is a golden ticket financially to fill their black hole. Pull out leaving them high and dry. Sure, the six get bad press but if it all goes back to before then they are in strongest league financially and all ok. Rest of premier league know the money from overseas is to watch them not Leicester etc. Kiss and make up. Force UEFA to change payments, job done. But Barcelona, real, Juventus are screwed. Though these are just face saving resignations for the cabals that run the clubs, it is encouraging that they believe they need to save face. Whatever else they might say about legitimate concerns and good intentions, it shows you are right that this was a serious plan not just a negotiating ploy, as they would not feel such a need to toss some chum to the sharks over something going to plan.

German ownership model would be a stupid move.....it would kill what is special about the EPL.

All the stuff about dreaming your club can do it, you can't under the German model, its why Bayern have won basically every year for 20 years, as there is no way you can get from low to high without spending the money, which you won't have without rich ownership.

I’m annoyed it’s fallen apart to be honest. My mates will pressure me to go back, but I can’t whilst Kroenke owns Arsenal.

These clubs deserve to suffer. To quote Mark Corrigan: I want compensation. I want reparations. I want the Rhineland. It’s going to be 1919 all over again. Fuck the inevitable backlash!
The govt introducing the German model of football ownership would be a fitting end to this shambles. Pretty sure at least one party will be proposing that as it is an electoral free hit and it will cost the owners several billion.
If it doesn’t, then it’s an idea which might be very attractive indeed to Labour. Starmer’s first real policy...
Which no doubt will occur to the govt.

Corbyn pushed this and I think it was like Commie Cable Company, on the surface it sounds good, then people think about it a bit more.

Man City would still be shit, Leicester would have never won the EPL, Leeds wouldn't be beating Chelsea and giving Liverpool a good game. And it is why every year every EPL team who qualify is in the running for the Champions League.

Bayern will be there next year in the hunt, Dortmund will be selling all their best players and no other German team will be in with a shot.

Conspiracy theory re ESL...... the premier league clubs know Real Madrid and Barcelona are fcked financially. You either love or hate in England Man Utd, Liverpool etc. As a Liverpool fan of 40 years who hates idea of ESL I hope this was floated as an upside. Disrupt the status quo and get all the presents or at worst screw the enemies...ll

    Nah.
Greedy bastards. Three of the 6 are heavily indebted too.
Even if you buy the idea of the clubs being stupid or greedy, JP Morgan were on board for the finance, and DAZN were rumoured to do the TV. So I think it was for real, rather than a stunt, but boy did they misjudge the response it would receive.
    DAZN denied all knowledge yesterday

Agriculture is a sizable carbon emitter & a big chunk of that goes on raising meat. Grass fed stuff is not so bad - that’s just an inefficient use of land (from the POV of max food production) it’s the US factory farm approach that’s incrediably carbon intensive: cattle kept in small lots & fed on soy beans & maize grown with the aid of fertilisers manufactured via the Haber process, which emits a lot of CO2. Plus cattle & sheep are themselves methane emitters, both directly & via breakdown of manure (this alone is ~6% of annual emissions according to my nearest source.)

But the big emitters are transport & energy production. Fix those & we’ll be a long, long way towards getting where we need to be.
It's about 10-12% so not that big and the "problem", such as it is, is overwhelmingly mass industrialised production of beef where it isn't appropriate. Eating sustainable grass-fed beef, in areas where grasslands naturally occur, actually makes sense.

Most British farmland consists of grass uplands and the most efficient way to turn this into high-quality, nutritious protein is to graze livestock - sheep and beef. The uplands also act as a store of carbon, and generating our protein here reduces fuel miles, and provides a habitat for floral and fauna diversity.

We need to differentiate between animals that are part of the problem - intensively produced poultry, pork and dairy - and those that are part of the solution, which are grass-fed ruminants in modest numbers. At the root of the climate change problem is burning billions of tons of fossil fuels - meat was around long before that - and that's where attention needs to be focussed. Don't let the ideologues piggy back on it.

Anyone preaching a religion of abstinence or veganism to me out of ideology is going to get a thick ear from me. If they try to make it policy, it will up-end British politics.

Completely o/t, but someone here will no the answer: I just got within an inch of being scammed by a fake e-commerce site, to the point where I had typed in my credit card details. Luckily I realised straightaway and cancelled the card.

The fake website exists in various forms under multiple domain names, such as:

    egospeedy.com
    tyresplusd.com
    mudpumpsm.top

with what looks like fake WHOIS information and no proper contact information.

However, they do have valid https certificates (Cloudflare).

Is there somewhere where I can report this to get the certificates revoked?

I have seen it many times when senior people responsible for a multi billion dollar decision bullshit their way through it; with not just no grasp of the nuance but sometimes the basic facts. But because everyone else in the room is also blagging it, they get away with it.

I had a couple of instances early in my career that taught me that even esteemed organisations that should be gatekeepers for certain info are making it all up too.

And that's the nagging doubt in the background of this. Because whilst this evening's news is good for football (and damn funny to boot), the underlying factors haven't gone away.

English football has become so good because it's so rich. But to a larger extent than we like to admit, that's depended on Other People's money- whether that's US Sports Entrepreneurs, Asian fans who will never see a live game or Dodgy Plutocrats.

Drive the questionable money out and you get a different type of sport; probably more wholesome, but with less money, fewer global superstars. It's Pompey Supporters Trust building quietly in League Two, not the gallery of rogues who preceded them in the Premiership and subsequent collapse.

Probably better for us, but are we collectively ready for that?

Most British farmland consists of grass uplands and the most efficient way to turn this into high-quality, nutritious protein is to graze livestock - sheep and beef.

With all due respect, do you actually know that for a fact?

I eat meat, and I love eating meat, but I am under no illusion about it being efficient or sustainable in any way.
Yes, some source for you that you might find more convincing:

    Institute for Global Food Security
    Sustainable Food Trust
Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB)
    University of Oxford

    https://www.oxfordmartin.ox.ac.uk/news/2018-news-climate-pollutants-gwp/

    https://sustainablefoodtrust.org/key-issues/sustainable-livestock/
But just because meat can be sustainable doesn't mean it is the most efficient use of British farmland in terms of the production of nutritious protein.

I'm not saying you're wrong but I would be surprised if it is.

Are you sure the WHOIS isn't simply anonymized? My registrar does that by default.

    https://www.cloudflare.com/abuse/form
It is an interesting question as to what https certificates are for. Originally they confirmed the site was what it claimed to be but arguably Google and Let's Encrypt have changed that so now it is just a way of establishing secure communication. This makes it harder for external scammers to get you but perhaps easier for scammers who own the site.

Still, you know who's smiling tonight? Ursula von der Leyen. She's no longer in charge of the worst organization with 'European' in the title...

I wouldn't go as far as that !!!
