Thinks it will avoid need for PM to quit if she loses the meaningful vote."

If May wants to gamble, maybe she hopes this forces Labour to offer a free vote.

Actually, if she thinks she's going to lose the vote anyway, she might as well offer a free vote.
On an issue this important how could anyone not vote their conscience even if it were not a free vote?
Well, for a John McDonnell the lack of a conscience may make things easier.

I had a hunch that Brexit would be the Gammon Waterloo.

    What does that even mean?
A last gasp mobilization for the outdated reactionary attitudes exemplified by ruddy-complexioned well-upholstered boomer males, before they are utterly crushed.
There will always be more coming along behind them. The attitudes may change, but the physical characteristics won't. Assuming no ethnic cleansing, of course.

Have checked out for 4 hours. Has anything exciting happened?

I logged off last night whilst PBers were reporting snippets from the text of the deal and finding unusual common ground that it would be OK for most of the country.

I logged on again this afternoon to find a foreign land where everyone was berating the Leavers.

Hopefully the common ground will eventually gain recognition & acceptance.

    Good evening, everyone.
It is strange that most on here saw the deal as a reasonable compromise but the ERG and DUP have thrown their toys out of the pram and Labour are cynically pursuing the chance of a GE.

I wonder if over the next couple of weeks saner voices will be heard in Westminster. I think TMay was right to say that people justwant this done.
Good grief. Corbyn really has misplayed this.
How so? Politically he is now well placed because his rebels do not appear to be keen to vote for the government, and a GE has risen in likelihood.
I was commenting on a fervent Labour supporter criticising him for 'cynicism.'

    Why has Grayling not resigned?

Grayling, I think, is an actual friend of May. He hates this deal and everything it represents, but he also won't want to hurt May more than he has to.

Let Gove wield the killing blow, he can just slipstream out in the murder-peloton.

Because he's a cock who should have resigned years ago over something else.

    Fine by me.

I did once tell Gove to his face that he should be embarrassed at his shameful pandering to the bigoted during the referendum.

One little thing to keep an eye on: just as Labour are very keen to act so that whatever happens they are not to blame for any possible bad outcome, in the same way both the EU and the UK government are very reluctant to be the body responsible for any new border issues between Ireland and N Ireland. The EU, so far as I know, do not have a plan for keeping an open border if there is no WA on 29th March, or if they have they are keeping quiet about it. Despite all current protestations therefore it may be more likely than people think that the EU will be open to extending the Article 50 period if they are asked to by the UK in order to avoid that dilemma. In reality therefore there may be more time that people expect for negotiations if (when) it is clear that the current ones are dead.

I wish they'd get on with it - while I believe them that May does not have the support of the party, if you are still struggling to pull together 48 measly letters I will have to assume that she does have their support.

Away from all this play-acting, we have the real fight for power and influence. There are 4 local by-elections today - 2 Labour defences in Bassetlaw and Stroud, a Con defence in Kent, and a LD defence in Oxfordshire

    I’ve figured out Brexit. Seriously!

Replace the unloved backstop with reentry.

That will get the Remainers on board, which should pass the bill

There are benefits for the ERG too. Why? Because we know membership of the EU can be terminated. In that scenario we could still leave with no deal.

    There is no Ireland issue.

Yeah, their focus on the letters has always seemed counterproductive. Much easier to torpedo the meaningful vote than win the vonc. So their constant state of 47.9 letters had turned into a running joke. "We're going to strengthen your position" is hardly an effective threat
  • TheoTheo Posts: 325
So May is battling on and the ERG have overplayed their hand. They only have about 30 votes against.

The question now is whether Labour have about 15% of decent people in their parliamentary ranks that care more about their constituents and country than upsetting Momentum.

May has delivered a deal that gets almost all the benefits of Leaving while protecting jobs and maintaining JIT supply chains. Everyone said that couldn't be done yet she achieved it.

The question is whether there are enough MPs in parliament that show similar fortitude.

TMay will try and keep going because of her faith in God and herself. She believes she is annoited while too many others consider her arrointed. Mad, possibly, but on a scale of some of the world's present leaders, a mild but significant condition .

I would like those opposed to this agreement to specifically and clearly state what they object to and to indicate how a better agreement could have been reached. I think that official Labour is proposing 100% BINO no advantages over memebership but clear disadvantages. Clearly not honouring the vote. From EMG it appears to be fantasy negotiations or WTO and negotiate like hell to try and reduce damage. Even a "normal" FT agreement would play merry hell with supply chains. She's actually done a good job and all the arrogant self-serving and deluded bastards who think they are moving in for the kill deserve to fail.

There's also the point that, if the deal were agreed (no laughter at the back) there's nothing to renegotiate right now anyway, so it isn't crucial even if the various joint committees and arbitration stuff and future prep will indeed be complex to react or respond to.

    This seems to have legs.

How about 'arrogant know-nothing treacherous pissflap?'
It’s better to keep it simple - “performing to expectations “.

Can anyone explain Raab's resignation to me.

Is he making some push for the leadership in a plan with the Mogg ?

Or is he a complete fecking moron ?

When considering conspiracy versus cock-up it's nearly always cock-up in my experience.
In order of likelyhood - it’s incompetency first, cock-up second, conspiracy falls well below the first 2

The thing that beats me about all this is how Mogg is a mover and shaker of any note.

The man is not guy of principle, he is an idealogue and that type should never get their puritanical hands on any levers..

It’s hard to say but I’d go with psychopath.

Someone who hears one of his cabinet colleagues say, “I cannot guarantee essential medicine availability” and thinks, “the anvil of my Europhobia is more important” is someone I wouldn’t want to rely on.

He's a reasonably articulate representative of a significant strand of opinion within his party, and he's very willing to be on hand to provide quotes. Were he not there it would just be someone else since the opinion is still there in the party.
  • If you think the rebels are all mouth no trousers, or even if you think they’re not but May can still find 159+ MPs to vote for her in a confidence vote, then laying her to go before 31st Dec at near enough evens looks like value on Betfair.

I wish they'd get on with it - while I believe them that May does not have the support of the party, if you are still struggling to pull together 48 measly letters I will have to assume that she does have their support.
The ERG are making May look competent.
May has delivered a deal that gets almost all the benefits of Leaving while protecting jobs and maintaining JIT supply chains. Everyone said that couldn't be done yet she achieved it.

The question is whether there are enough MPs in parliament that show similar fortitude.</blockquote

There was hardly any MPs from all of the parties today in parliament agreeing with Mays deal.

So the answer to your question is no.

I think there are about 40MPs who won't vote for, 10 will be persuaded to abstain which means we need 30 Labour rebels to get it through. I think it's possible

Best not be an equality of votes, I think if Bercow were to stick to convention that would be to vote against in this instance.

I haven't seen BR yet, but I think there's a lot in that for many films: too often, critics forget what audiences want.

I think Bercow would find an excuse to vote for it on the basis it maintained the status quo while voting it down would precipitate a major change.

This argument would of course also royally piss off the ERG, but I am sure that would have no bearing on his decision...

Judging by the absolute state of the pricks, jokers, liars, dullards and clowns who have resigned or sent in bloody letters in the last 24 hours, this is a decent deal. A twat who doesn’t know where France is, a congenital scouse liar, a sinister Etonian who looks like a striped pencil, and a bunch of utter nobodies. Gove would complete the set - presumably he is waiting for his wife to give the green light. Here’s hoping.

    SNP/Greens/PC against
