I hope that everyone has an enjoyable evening whatever your political views. I will be watching the BBC results show for as long as I can stay awake but I'll not be popping by PB as my personal preference is for the BBC results to be my one and only source of news on election nights... unfortunately they barely seem to both covering live declarations they are so busy speculating on what might happen with their guests if so and so happen and who'll do what with whom tomorrow - so you usually just get recorded results when they can tear themselves away from their 'fascinating' waffle.
The worst of it is when they break in to potentially interesting comments from Laura/Prof C because so and so is in his or her car on the way to their count, or walking in to their count etc etc. Helicopeters in the air all the way showing a car driving in the dark or early morning which is BORING as xxxx....
I may be going overboard too early.
There is a lot to be said for ITV's straightforward coverage. Results, results, results.
BBC is too preoccupied with Westminster village machinations (at least it was in 2015).
I thought ITV badly misjudged things last time - spending way to much time on the SNP rather than Con v Lab and whether Con would get a majority.
Mrs C, Yorkshire is a flourishing and bountiful land, nourished by the timely rain. Not a parched realm of nightmares, like Mordor.
Leave Derbyshire out of this.....
Derbyshire has been left out of everything since the dawn of civilisation.....
It is slowly creeping up on Sheffield though. It seems to get closer every time I go over Snake Pass.
It's a sneaky county, Derbyshire. You've got to watch it like a hawk....
It is so bleak up in the hills. If you car has a problem up there then you might as well be on the back of the moon as far as mobile phones are concerned.
My first car was an ex-National Rivers Authority Land Rover 110. It nearly killed me three times, including once when I was travelling over the tops between Chesterfield and Matlock on a foggy night and lost all electrics, including lights.
My brother had much more fun with his Land Rover, including the time he was on its roof and it rolled onto him. That's an impressive feat!
I regularly drive past the Land Rover factory in Liverpool. There are plenty more of them to go around so tell your brother not to worry too much
I don't think they make the classic Land Rover any more? It's all Freeloaders and Piscoverys now, isn't it.
I saw a figure somewhere for the percentage of Land Rovers made that are still in existence: it was remarkably high. You just can't kill them.
Just been watching Ch4 News about Trump. I have to say whatever anyone might think about 'Leavers' in Hartlipool or any voter for any of our mainstream parties there's no way a chancer like Trump would have got anywhere near high office in this country. Another vote, another opportunity to 'delurk' (and relurk afterwards)! Other delurkers have something useful when delurking, so this is my attempt! I have devised a strategy to receive the exit polls result as fast as possible to stop (or encourage) the cases of bed-wetting on PB.
1. The greatest time saving can be gained by choosing the correct broadcaster to receive the exit poll from. Looking back at 2015, I have come to the following conclusions about each one. BBC: It took 13 seconds of agony after Big Ben struck 10 o'clock for the BBC to reveal the actual seat numbers, this was not good enough. It is now clear that the BBC simply cannot be trusted to deliver the exit poll results to us in a timely matter. ITV: The predicted seat numbers appeared on screen instantly Sky: At 10:00pm exactly, they used a fancy graphic and it wasn't until the end of the first second of the hour, until you even saw a glimmer of how many seats the Conservatives were predicted. A further half second passed until the full graphic, with all parties, was displayed on screen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlZMORFyS7U I shall, therefore, be watching ITV for the Exit Polls results only.
2. It used to be a well-known fact that, if you watched something on live television, that you would hear the television program, before the people at the back of the auditorium or studio did. However, with the demise of analogue television this simply isn't the case anymore. It must be noted, that all digital decoders are not equal! Your different Freeview and Sky decoders will work at different rates. Now is the perfect opportunity to find the set which decodes fastest, this can be easily achieved by placing two televisions next to each other and seeing which one is marginally quicker than the other. There can be a delay of up to 10 seconds depending on which decoder you use. It must also be noted that the devils spawn, of delayed transmission, are the 'live' television services known as Iplayer, ITV Hub, Sky Go and YouTube. Do not use these unless you must, they can be over a minute behind the live broadcast.
3. Make sure to sit closer to the TV! The speed of light is 299,792,458m/s. Which means that if you sat 3m further away from the TV, you would see the results of the exit poll around 1/100,000,000 of a second after. Of course, this is based on the speed of light in a perfect vacuum, light travels slower through air, this just makes the problem worse!
My likely reactions to exit polls results: A. Con Majority > 50 = Sense of relief B. Con Majority > 10 < 50 = Sigh... (What was the point?) C. Con Majority < 10 = Where are those incontinence pads? D. Con Largest Party > 300 = Bedwetting E. Con Largest Party < 300 = Cold sweat F. Lab Largest Party or Maj = Evacuation of bowels Bonus: CASE WHEN POLL IN ("A","B") AND LD < 5 THEN "Dance, cheer and punch the air" ELSE "" END

They have a habit of talking over the numbers too.
Going to flick between the channels again, especially when the BBC does loads of interviews instead of you know announcing results (the actual point of the broadcast).
Will check out Balls and Osborne a little on ITV, and if Labour are in for a pasting got to check Owen Jones's reaction of course. Actually Osborne's reaction might be interesting considering some of the attacks on May since he went to the Evening Standard. Of course I will be checking here as well
Snacks and drinks all ready, I think I can make it until at least 4 am, though the last two GE's it was like 8 am I went to bed.
I found the BBC coverage of the 2015 election very poor. As you say, there were far too many talking heads and far too few declarations and news reports from the counts. Amidst all the windy speculation, the Beeb completely failed to capture the historic, unfolding drama of the night. My recollection is that they barely even covered the extraordinary results in places like Warwickshire South, Plymouth Moor View, Telford and Southampton Itchen.

Also the potential sight of Owen Jones windmilling and blaming the electorate or claiming a false victory will be immensely satisfying

Sadly, not so. They made the last proper Defender in January 2016, it's just ridiculous Discos and Ewoks now.
@JamesP.. hah! Thanks for spending time on that. DD did go on a bit before saying what the seat numbers were, and there was an almighty pause after he said tories most seats.

He says that at every election since he has been a commentator. In 2010 he said the tory campaign was all wrong despite the fact the Tories would have to win more seats than at any post war election and then again in 2015, he doubled down on the mistake. In international politics he said Trump could never win the Republican nomination and then after that the General Election. I don't think he understands how political parties work which is surprising as he worked for the Tories. He is more of an ideology person compared to a person who understands the machine required to win a election.
His problem is that he desperately wants to be in the Tories inner circle but no-one else wants him, and his attention-seeking behaviour only ever makes it worse.

Joking aside, no. 1 is useful info for a quick buy/sell on Betfair if the same holds this time
Befitting my orphan status, I have spoiled my ballot paper. Sympathetic to the Conservatives but their failings on border security were too much.
I have to be in work at 8am in the morning. Should I stay up and then get 4 hours sleep later, or try to get some shuteye earlier and be up by the very early hours?
Funny seeing that graphic of that exit poll from last time. The LDs were aghast back then that they would be down to 10 seats; I bet they'd be over the moon if they achieved that tonight.
Really boring day on the IG seat spread market - they dropped a bit on opening, but basically haven't moved since noon. Either nothing useful is leaking out, or the prices & polling averages are already accurate (con low 360s)

My friend is in a similar bind, I told him to stay up until 10pm for the exit poll, go to bed, then wake up at 3am

I actually think this is quite a cool celeb endorsement. Obviously runs in the family.
I would agree. Her grandfather was Labour leader no? I have a lot more respect for her than your Lily Allens or Ruby Tandohs.
Ruby Tandoh is constantly furious. This week she has called out fellow celebrity chefs for failing to speak out during the election. Of course she only wants them to speak out one way.

If we had a nationwide Presidential election in the period 2011ish - EUref then I think that Farage would have done really quite well.
You could describe Farage as Trump without the spelling mistakes.
He's more Nutall than Farage. It's the sleazy dishonesty that the UK electorate wouldn't buy....

Ken Hom is frantically canvassing in Nuneaton as we speak
"The Electoral Services Department here in Newcastle is a shambles and there is chaos, which is denying people votes on a scale unprecedented in my 30 years fighting and organising elections."

If that is right, then I will quote Michael Heseltine from the 1987 election results program who said "Labour have not just lost this election but the next one as well."
I think the Tories will win but the thing that puzzles me is where Labour have been targeting, they are all usually safe Labour seats. I think Labour are going to do far worse than the polls (Not that I believe them).

I heard that the Momentum types were out in Chingford trying to topple IDS.
That is true virtue signalling campaigning.
I can think of dozens of seats more likely to go Red than Chingford and Woodford Green.

Nothing about non-registrations, just apparently a low turnout on campus (which is still in term).
Why would anybody choose the BBC over Sky. Why curtice was still saying too close to call in the EU referendum and 2015 GE, Thrasher had already calculated the results and gone home.
For me it depends on the graphics, best graphics get on the TV, second best on the laptop, ITV off.
I love watching BBC just to see the disappointment on their faces. Andrew Marr was practically in tears after the exit poll 2015.
Anecdote - I was called up by someone at a Conservative phonebank today asking if I had voted in Edinburgh North and Leith - which is my constituency. I had and asked him how it was going. He said the Tories were getting their vote out but that it would be close. Of course he would say that anyway, but interesting that the Tories are throwing resources at EN&L at this stage.
Just had first megaphone candidate passing by in a car now - safe seat so pretty much no campaigning at all here (he probably just drove over the consituency border by mistake).

Four anecdotes from telling in Norwich South [New Costessey Ward - LV1] for 10 hours today...
1 The polling station Inspector tells me that the queues at the University of East Anglia polling station were transitory and caused by a whole load of students leaving a big exam at the same time and all going off to the polling station before retiring to the pub. Treat twitter pix with caution.
2 I met a charming lady with two poll cards asking me what to do with the other - her husband died on Tuesday. I just hugged her tightly and then the presiding officer helped her in her grief and looked after the card for her. Lump in the throat time.
3 Turnout v high at about 75pc - that is about 1100 in the polling station and an additional 500+ postals.
4 Labour phoned someone who lived 3 doors from the polling station asking him whether he wanted a taxi. He was a committed Tory voter so was perplexed by the offer.
The key for me in the campaign is where JC has been going. They clearly have been on the defensive throughout. Their internal polling must have been telling something which the published polling has not picked up
I talked to a senior Tory this morning who thinks we are on for 100 plus.
reckon the tories on around 48% c395 seats labour on about 31% in the 170-180 seat range. but who knows, I think a lot of shy tories out there, Jezza is still toxic
A steady supply of Earl Grey, accompanied by my own reconstructed Pimms No.10 (Irish whiskey, fruit & randomish herbs) I expect to be quite ill by the end of the night, which given the potential administrations on offer seems entirely appropriate.
The key for me in the campaign is where JC has been going. They clearly have been on the defensive throughout. Their internal polling must have been telling something which the published polling has not picked up
BMG sneaking that poll out yesterday told us where Labour are at.
Anecdote, or rather amusing tale. My partner is over the road having a drink and she's texted to say the table next to her are strong corbynistas who are convinced the polls are wrong and it's Corbyn by a mile. She voted Tory and is enjoying winding me up about not doing so.
I heard that the Momentum types were out in Chingford trying to topple IDS.
That is true virtue signalling campaigning.

Indeed you are correct, I can only put it down to lack of experience and insight by the people who are organising it. They really don't understand the ground game vs the national campaign. They think doing well in the national debate translates to the ground game but I know from a distinguished expert who kindly told me when I was bedwetting a few campaigns ago that it does not translate and the person was correct! The person was not even on my side of the political argument but the Labour leader was Gordon Brown! Even they thought he was not up to the job and could understand my anxiety.

Is the high turnout only in your ward which is one of the more Conservative parts of the constituency ?
And is the university area having much lower turnout ?
Surely there's no chance that Labour might not win Norwich South.
Comments
I saw a figure somewhere for the percentage of Land Rovers made that are still in existence: it was remarkably high. You just can't kill them.
ITV: The predicted seat numbers appeared on screen instantly
Sky: At 10:00pm exactly, they used a fancy graphic and it wasn't until the end of the first second of the hour, until you even saw a glimmer of how many seats the Conservatives were predicted. A further half second passed until the full graphic, with all parties, was displayed on screen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlZMORFyS7U
I shall, therefore, be watching ITV for the Exit Polls results only.
My likely reactions to exit polls results:
A. Con Majority > 50 = Sense of relief
B. Con Majority > 10 < 50 = Sigh... (What was the point?)
C. Con Majority < 10 = Where are those incontinence pads?
D. Con Largest Party > 300 = Bedwetting
E. Con Largest Party < 300 = Cold sweat
F. Lab Largest Party or Maj = Evacuation of bowels
Bonus:
CASE WHEN POLL IN ("A","B") AND LD < 5 THEN "Dance, cheer and punch the air" ELSE "" END
Anyway, I am off now. I plan on returning just ahead of 10pm, but if I don't, best of luck to everyone whose bets coincide with mine.
everywhere she goes there are dead bodies
But this is my prediction for tonight

I have to be in work at 8am in the morning. Should I stay up and then get 4 hours sleep later, or try to get some shuteye earlier and be up by the very early hours?
Somebody get Antony Wirral Thompson on the phone!
A good night for Theresa May!

My Facebook feed was full of complaints after a slew of (mostly) students voting registrations were lost:
"The Electoral Services Department here in Newcastle is a shambles and there is chaos, which is denying people votes on a scale unprecedented in my 30 years fighting and organising elections."
Snap general election causing problems? Replicated elsewhere? Any anecdotes?
I think the Tories will win but the thing that puzzles me is where Labour have been targeting, they are all usually safe Labour seats. I think Labour are going to do far worse than the polls (Not that I believe them).

That is true virtue signalling campaigning.
I can think of dozens of seats more likely to go Red than Chingford and Woodford Green.
Didn't have my waterballoons ready unfortunately.
"A terrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiibbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbblllllllllllllllleeeeeeeeeeeee" night for Labour" thank you very much.

A steady supply of Earl Grey, accompanied by my own reconstructed Pimms No.10 (Irish whiskey, fruit & randomish herbs)
I expect to be quite ill by the end of the night, which given the potential administrations on offer seems entirely appropriate.
Edit: nunu saying he has been unbanned.. my bad!
