A Tory defected from one campaign to the other, a noteworthy thing to happen, although already moved on from.

Three Labour MPs declaring for Leave from undeclared should not be news, unless we are admitting Leave aren't appealing well to Labour and so any MPs declaring for leave at all is noteworthy.

Maybe. I'm sure I saw SeanT post it in relation to a Meeks thread header... But maybe Ali said is first in relation to Ms. Plato?

Not mentioned so far I think, but Eagles sole purpose in the debate was to focus on Labour supporters to vote Remain, hence her partisan attacks on the Tories, but saying that "giving them a bloody nose" by voting to Leave would be a huge error. Ditto to a lesser extent Sturgeon more widely to those on the left.

It obviously grates with Tories (like me!) but it may have been an agreed tactic beforehand.

Agree that Leadsom and Stuart did well and Boris above par.

This evening I had to stand in silence and listen to a Labour IN campaigner explain that prior to joining the EU, we were the sick man of Europe, but after we joined, we no longer were thanks to the EU.

I really wanted to say no, it was thanks to f*cking Thatcher, but this was a family of voters who hates the f*cking Tories.
Unfortunately there have been quite a few Tories repeating this nasty piece of leftist revisionism. You should have corrected him.

Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is to have heart surgery after an attack that could have killed him, his doctor says.

The 79-year-old will undergo surgery by the middle of next week to replace a defective aortic valve, Alberto Zangrillo told reporters in Rome.

Remain are panicking. Blair and Major say Leaving will "jeopardise" British unity. That sounds great, say many who voted for Scottish independence. Meanwhile, Sturgeon speaks for Remain against Johnson. Where's your Union Jack, Nicola?

    Leave say "reduce immigration".

    Who's got the clearest message?

Mandelson says Remain have "only" got immigration. Well? New Labour "only" had modernity in 1997.

Most in England and Wales couldn't care much whether Scotland goes independent or not. Just get Salmond and Sturgeon off their TV sets.

As for Johnson, at least he's not playing the English card. Imagine if he did! Right-wing Tories braying out the words of "Jerusalem", as they and their fathers and grandfathers before them did at boarding school. I hope nobody's reading this while they're eating.

St Helena. GDP is about £10m. And they managed to spend £285m on an airport.

That's quite an achievement. That would be like London spending £20trillion on an airport.
Nothing wrong with building the airport, slightly disappointed that they didn't think the middle of the South Atlantic was windy and check first.

No customs are levied on goods travelling within the EU customs union but, unlike a free trade area, a common external tariff is imposed on all goods entering.

When we joined the EEC most of our trade was with its members, so arguably it made sense for us to be a member, but that's no longer the case. Technological improvements and the relative decline of the EU compared with the rest of the world (both factors which are unlikely to be reversed) mean we now trade more with countries outside the EU than we do with countries inside. Since most of our trade is now with countries outside the EU it makes sense for us to leave.

This is a strong and easy to explain economics based argument for us to leave. Are there problems with it? Can it be improved? Wikipedia has a page about the EU Customs Union here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Union_Customs_Union

That's actually not true, most of our exports at the time we joined the EEC were to ex-empire nations which suddenly had to pay tariffs to import our goods.

It's the fact that it's built on a cliff that's causing the issues with wind shear.
I didn't realise it was £285 million when I first heard of the project it was a lot lot less.
I was about to make a joke about how you should just double or triple initial estimates of cost, to the point of wondering why they even pretend it will cost less, but apparently that rail tunnel under the alps was on time and on budget, at least according to the BBC write up - I nearly fell out of my chair, as I had no idea it was possible for such things to be on budget.

I've been doing a bit of research and found out (everyone else probably already knew this) that a percentage of Britain's DISTENDED overseas aid budget is called MULTILATERAL overseas development aid (as opposed to bilateral overseas development aid), and instead of being given to the needy, just gets bunged to big international organisations instead.

Guess what organisation takes the biggest cut of this multilateral overseas development aid? Correct - the European Commission. To be precise, in 2013, £813million to the European Commission, and £407million to the European Commission - European Development Fund. So that's well over a billion (I can't find 2015 figures, but international aid has gone up significantly since then) of British tax payers money going to the EU completely off the books. I suspect it's probably over £2 billion now, and potentially significant in this 'lying over the figures' debate.

Don't see how anyone who reads the Times can think that they are going to be anything but for Remain.

I read it every weekday (we get it in work).I was discussing the Times last night on this very board. The commentariat before the middle page are mostly for LEAVE, with some obvious exceptions (Fink, Parris, etc). The business writers after the middle page are mostly for REMAIN, with some exceptions. I think it'll go LEAVE because Murdoch, but it is genuinely conflicted.

The reactions of the business press embedded in sceptic papers is interesting. In the Telegraph Jeremy Warner has worked out that Vote Leave is pursuing an anti-economic strategy and is beginning to worry. Ambrose Evans-Pritchard also I think realises it, but (true to his persona) will simply blame Europe instead of taking responsibility. Everybody else is Pollyanna, tbh.

Conversely, Larry Elliot, the economics editor of the Guardian is almost certainly LEAVE, and was single currency sceptic
    Good point

Just checked facebook, which is home to many, many lefties in my circle of friends. All of them had praise for Andrea, Boris, Gisella and Angela, less impressed by Sturgeon, completely unimpressed by Rudd.

    Consensus:

Boris - finally being serious, speaking with passion
Andrea - who is she, why haven't we seen more from her
    Gisella - same as above
Angela - wish she had a more prominent role in the Labour party
Sturgeon - why is she talking about climate change, it's important but irrelevant right now
Rudd - typically Tory, no soul

St Helena. GDP is about £10m. And they managed to spend £285m on an airport.

That's quite an achievement. That would be like London spending £20trillion on an airport.
Nothing wrong with building the airport, slightly disappointed that they didn't think the middle of the South Atlantic was windy and check first.

    Oh dear.
    £285m.

That's a staggering amount of money for a country with 4,000 people.

    That's £500,000 per person.
It is part of a country of 65 million.

This my cue to get a plug in for the RidgeView estate at Ditchling. Superb sparkling wines (beat the Frog champagne on a blind taste), served at state banquets (including one for Obama) and fantastic value for money. Not only that, but even Mr. AlanBrooke, gent of this parish, conceded, after I had nagged him into trying one, that it was quite nice! Praise like that from an Ulsterman, almost unheard of.

Just to be clear, although the estate is only a couple of miles away I have absolutely no financial interest or other in the place. Its just that having discovered the family's products I want share the good news.

I'm not sure a great deal has changed really. 'The sick man of Europe' wasn't a comparison with Spain or Poland, it was with the original 6 members and maybe Scandanavia. How do we fare now? Well better than Italy I suppose but that's about it. For all the talk about job creation if you measure things in per capita income we aren't doing that well. France seems to be having a bit of a turbulent time mind.

I was merely commenting about the suicide note and remarking that it doesn't, on its own, prove a miscarriage of justice. The recent TV dramatization of the Colin Howell case depicted a double murder which was treated as a suicide in part due to the existence of a suicide note.

Two weeks today, I'm going to be eating a curry and drinking a pint.

    What about you guys?

I was thinking I might throw an EURef Party (like a Eurovision party only for geeks) with the champagne firmly on ice.
    Champagne???

England does some fantastic sparkling wines.

(Says the man drinking Italian wine.)

Thank you very much. I will put an order in for 23 June.

I am really struggling to believe this. I think it will be close like 52/48 Remain on a 60% turnout.

Izzard is toxic for remain, exactly the sort of person they should avoid putting on television. completely off message too.

You're right about that - Farage/Grayling playing a solid game, Benn quite good I think but all his work being undone by the manic Izzard and then some.

£285 million pounds on an airport that can't open.

    The German one? No.

    Some EU nonsense? No.

It seems we're capable of screwing up all by ourselves...

St Helena. GDP is about £10m. And they managed to spend £285m on an airport.

That's quite an achievement. That would be like London spending £20trillion on an airport.
Not "they" - the British Government paid for the airport!
I just want to remind you that St Helena is British.

I'll believe it when phone polls start showing it as 50:50.

He does seem to like putting the cat amongst the pigeons.
Indeed but political forecasts are not his forte
