The FA will now give Gareth "the Loser" Southgate another 748 year contract lasting until the heat death of the universe, or longer, if we get to penalties next time

Whatever. I’ve watched England since 1982. I remember all the failure. Southgate has delivered three semis and two finals in four tournaments. Remember the Wolly with the brolly. Remember Kevin ‘Keep believing Scholsey’ Keegan. Remember struggling to reach the World Cup. Fuck it remember Brazil.
Yet he is the second best England manager of all time, 2 Euros finals and 1 World Cup semi final and a quarter final. Only Sir Alf Ramsey has a better record
People just casually walking around SF with Trump hats.
Something has changed.
The fact that people in that city felt in danger if they publicly supported the elected president of the country between 2016 and 2020 sort of illustrates the problem in the United States in recent years.
When does the traditional call for the public execution of Southgate start?
I expect the poor man will quit now. He's certainly suffered enough. I doubt anyone else would've done as well, let alone better. Some other poor sap can take the brickbats for the inevitable failures in 2026, 2028 and 2030.

only Sir Alf Ramsay had a better team to pick from as well

If Biden remains the candidate Trump wins. I doubt whether yesterday's incident has any lasting effect.
Your team is 6.0 up at half time. Watkins and Palmer could be on the Dem bench.
No evidence for that, no alternative candidate does any better than Biden in polls, most do worse. Plenty more to play for including Trump's VP pick and sentencing and the convention bounces
Most surprising thing is that we got it back to 1-1 after being behind.
And so close to equalising again. Sick as a parrot - but that making finals of major tournaments now feels like failure shows how things have improved.
Disappointing but Spain are a class team. England outperformed expectations by getting to the final tbh.
Kane's England days are over imo.
They started the tournament as favourites and had the easiest draw possible to get to the final.
Favourites in the U.K. betting market, I assume you mean?
In the FIFA rankings England were fourth behind only France and Belgium (of European teams), at the outset of the tournament. So England being ONE of the favourites is entirely fair, but maybe not THE favourites, but after the draw then yes they were even bigger faves
Given the depth of talent, Southgate should have won something in his seventy trillion years of managing the side, but in the end, he just hasn't got it
I'm not sure what "it" is. Some kind of life-career version of "noom". It's a bit more than "luck", it's a weird human quality which turns talent into success. We need a word for it. And it is not just "luck"

Like in war, your opponents get a say too. This Spanish have been excellent. We lost 2-1 in the final to an excellent side who beat Germany, France etc.
I notice the King of Spain is in the trophy presentation team along with the Prince of Wales but the King of England (and the UK) is not.
I have never seen Charles at a football match ever, although he sent the obligatory good luck message I expect he couldn't care less who wins and didn't even watch it and has been eating organic asparagus and drinking Pimms and reading in his garden in Highgrove

Do you actually follow football? They started the tournament off the back of a defeat to the mighty Iceland. I thought they'd do well to get to the quarter-finals. Spain and France are clearly better sides. England are in the same second tier group as Germany, Portugal, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands.

Evidence provided below...Opta computer model. You know the people whose whole business is football stats and modelling. University of Liverpool model they were predicted to get to final and come second.

Another depressing post mortem coming, to add to all the others.
Almost stopped countin'
"We either won, or nearly won"
Oh well, at least all 36 readers of the Nat Onal will be happy.
Best team won the tournament.
Let’s not excuse mediocrity and second place.
It's the sound of telepathy being ticked I'm afraid.

England did OK but again were defeated by a Latin side in a Euros final it seems
yes would have bene compulsory to treat them as Gods
lol

But when you're up against a better team a bit of luck is often needed.
And England had already had their share of that in earlier games.
Spain deserved winners . Southgate needs to go and we need a manager who wants to play attacking football .
Perhaps, against the best team in the world, a close 2-1 is a rather respectable result?

I don't care if he "has a great record". He LOSES because he's a LOSER
He has phenomenal players and probably the 2nd best squad behind France. He's lost, AGAIN
His big chance was the last euros, and his timidity cost us, this time we lucked out due to an incredibly easy draw, we were never that good
F off Gareth, and take your stupid waistcoat with you
OTOH I am relatively serene. I think this has happened so often in my life, I've stopped especially caring
If panic stations is better than the plan then the plan is wrong.

A gallant loser is a loser. Keep doing what you’ve always done and you’ll,keep, getting what you’ve always got.
According to Opta's probability rating, England have a 44.7% chance of winning Euro 2024.
And favourites with US bookmarkers...

The asparagus season is over.
