Japan's pension pivot puts Abe-era outpouring of capital in reverse
    ...
On Friday, Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama floated an idea to encourage the $1.8 trillion Government Pension Investment Fund (GPIF) and other retirement vehicles to increase their holdings of domestic assets.

    https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/takaichis-pension-pivot-seeks-reverse-abe-era-outpouring-japanese-capital-2026-07-10/ (£££)

Rachel Reeves has similarly been trying to encourage savings here, although if she (or her successor) is not careful, it will just mean more invested in US stocks rather than British shares.

These sorts of move might also increase pressure on government bonds which is not necessarily good news.

I'm currently on holiday but fel obliged to comment on Ann Widdicombe.

It is entirely possible to disagree with just about everything that someone says an believes in, yet to have the utmost respect for them.

Ann was a complete one - off.

She was utterly transparent, what you saw was what you got.

Her death in this way was a tragedy.

It would be a small crumb of comfort to find out that it was perpetrated by whoever on grounds that were nothing at all to do with Politics. That seems probably the case.

She lived in an area of great beauty and almost complete isolation.

She should be remembered fondly as a genuine person the like of which we will not see again.

Very good post. I think this shows you can fundamentally disagree with people’s politics and world view but can have respect for them . This reminds me a bit of what I’d call the old timers in the Commons who were for years pro Brexit even when it wasn’t fashionable. Whilst totally disagreeing with them on that I still respect that it was their principled position as opposed to some who jumped on the bandwagon for their political ambitions . No one deserves such a horrible fate that happened to poor Ann Widdecombe . It would seem very strange if this had a political motive as she wasn’t a high profile politician anymore .

Indeed, her politics were awful, however no one deserves to meet their maker on account of their politics which is why Tatchel's intervention was so unwelcome. It will be interesting to see whether Farage uses the tragedy to toxify the well.

Well said, and good that most people are willing to say the same regardless of political affiliation. Sadly not all people, but definitely most.

Sadly I logged off yesterday thinking that Miss Widdecome had succumbed to an illness, unaware that she had been murdered.

She may have had a high-profile career as a public servant, but in retirement she was quite literally the little old lady you know from church.

We don’t yet know the motive, perhaps it was a house robbery gone wrong rather than a targeted killing or politically motivated, but it seems unfathomable why someone would want to murder that little old lady.

I once saw some footage of Trump playing golf at Turnberry.

Every time he wanted to play a shot, his aide would carefully place the ball in front of wherever he'd pulled up his golf cart.

Now, that was a practice round, by himself. But he later tweeted about how well he'd played the course.

Or to put it another way - I'll believe stories about his brilliance on the golf course when I've actually seen hard evidence for them.

As I say, I'll believe it when I see it, and that's not from footage of somebody placing balls in front of him for him to play.

My grandfather at 86 could play a par 73 course in 90 shots, walking, playing as it lay. *That's* somebody who was a good player for his age. I see no evidence Trump is even in the same parish.

I hate to indulge in the trivial when the murder of Ann Widdecombe is still fresh, but I need to moan about a film. IMHO, there are/were three perfect films: Alien, Manhunter, Apocalypse Now. Recently they have been disfigured by "director's cuts": Alien has a variant (not too bad but entirely unnecessary and worse than the original) and Apocalypse Now was ruined by the "Final Cut" (it's just rubbish). Now Michael Mann did the Final Cut for Manhunter and the 4k version is now out, being rereleased in September. The person in the back row silently weeping salty tears will be me. Why can't they leave well enough alone?

I haven't seen the other two, but Manhunter (1986) is very close to being THE perfect film. Never get tired of watching it.
I can't think of a film to rival it in the serial killer genre. Unless you count Don't Look Now.
Holy Spider and Memories of a Murder are both better. IMO.
Agreed on both Memories of Murder* (for those who haven't seen it, the director and lead were Oscar winners for Parasite), and the lack of Mondial hate.

*Based on S Korea's most notorious serial murder case, which their directors are obsessed with.

    A former BBC colleague says:
"Of the hundreds of high profile politicians I dealt with as a floor manager Ann stood out as one who was unfailingly sweet and personable. In those high pressure moments of appearing on Newsnight to be interviewed by Jeremy, it was unremarkable if MPs were terse or barely noticed you were there, but she was a pleasure to bring into the studio, lovely to deal with.
    What absolute horror."

It's not quite the same thing because the killer isn't serial but the Argentinian film, El secreto de sus ojos is an excellent treatment of similar themes.

"I think Kane is a great player," Trump said. "I played golf with him and I like him a lot. He's a good golfer. He's really great."

Trump is a good player for his age
As I say, I'll believe it when I see it, and that's not from footage of somebody placing balls in front of him for him to play.

My grandfather at 86 could play a par 73 course in 90 shots, walking, playing as it lay. *That's* somebody who was a good player for his age. I see no evidence Trump is even in the same parish.

Medical here. If this video is real, there's a couple things that stand out to me after watching at 0.25x speed. 1) they have a sally transfer sheet underneath of him, which means he was not assisting or mobile at all.
    2) they have like no equipment with them; I don't see a bag mask, a LUCAS, intubation. Nothing. This is consistent with the transfer of a dead body...

I spoke on the phone for 30 minutes with Mitch this morning, and he categorically denied being dead.

Trump is good but he’s not a patch on Kim Jong Ils abilities. Eleven holes in one on his first ever round. He stopped playing to give others a chance…

I've had my breakfast outdoors this morning. And I have to say that it is a bit on the chilly side.

    Wonderful.

The trouble is that the cool air that has now had the chance to enter the house will get heated up by the fabric of the building.

But the forecast is *only* 27C here today, so we shouldn't get a repeat of the 28.9C we had in the living room yesterday.

Ridiculous odds for Reform. They're surely value at that price given they must be 1/20 in the real world.
Bookies might be running scared after a few shrewdies backed Count Binface at 3-figure prices before it became evident the major parties were not taking part.

Betfair's history shows £3 was traded at 1,000 on Count Binface, with £200 at 60.

    Correct.

You probably have a table called USERS with fields ID USERNAME PASSWORD (hash) DATE_CREATED DATE_UPDATED etc.

You then have a table called COMMENTS with fields COMMENT_ID DATE_TIME USER_ID COMMENT_TEXT.

You have a join between the field ID in the USERS table, and the field USER_ID in the COMMENTS table, which is how you associate each comment with the user.

Given the apparent state he is in, it’s unlikely that the situation is being caused by McConnell himself.

The politicking is coming from those around him.

I (half) wrote a scraper that would automatically go through the comments, going back to before vanilla, and save them into a NoSql DB.

It’s not very difficult in the age of Claude.

Yes, that reportedly happened earlier in the war too. China undoubtedly believes that the day Russia uses a nuke in support of a war of conquest against a non-nuclear country is the day that Taiwan, South Korea and Japan acquire nuclear weapons, and they really don't want that.

And Russia also knows what a hole it will be in without Chinese support.

New footage reportedly shows Sen. Mitch McConnell being loaded onto a stretcher and taken by ambulance after collapsing. EMS audio reportedly references an unconscious patient in cardiac arrest with CPR in progress, according to CNN.

Schrödinger's Senator. Both dead and alive until he is observed. Then he will collapse into a single state.
It's going to have its own Weekend at Mich's meme isn't it?
If it doesn’t already, then the entire internet is composed of slackers.
There’s plenty of memes already. When Scott Jennings said he’d spoken to McConnell for 20 minutes, about 500 other accounts posted almost exactly the same.
I've no time at all for Mitch McConnell, for all sorts of reasons, but he's still a long serving and senior Senator. He deserves a great deal better than the politicking he's getting from all sides at the moment, whatever the truth of the matter.
If he were looking down on all this, he'd likely be nodding with approval at the political shithousery.

In any event, his wife is unconcerned.

    https://www.livenowfox.com/news/mitch-mcconnells-hospital-latest-wife-releases-statement.amp
..According to WLKY, McConnell’s wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, was in China when McConnell was first hospitalized. She released the following statement on Wednesday:

"The secretary was on a long-planned trip in China to support her family's philanthropic endeavors. During the trip, she met with a number of people, including the US ambassador. The Senator's health did not warrant an immediate return to the US."..

This is very different to Widdecombe/Tatchell.

Nothing's been announced and people speculate in the vacuum. Plus there's the undercurrent that it actually seems viable they'd pull a Weekend at Mitch's stunt if they could - and its what he would have wanted.
There is some difference, but don't you find it a bit unedifying to speculate on how ill/dead someone in hospital is?
The conspiracy theory is that he’s being kept alive, or his death concealed, to avoid a by-election, the deadline for which is in a couple of weeks’ time.

Speaking on Friday on the eve of their World Cup quarter-final match against Norway, Kane confirmed the round took place in Palm Beach, Florida, about 18 months ago.
    ...
Trump had complimented the Bayern Munich forward on his Truth Social platform following England's 3-2 last-16 victory over Mexico, writing: "Harry Kane of England is a GREAT player!!!"

The following day, Trump revealed the pair had played golf together.
"I think Kane is a great player," Trump said. "I played golf with him and I like him a lot. He's a good golfer. He's really great."

    Newent?
Ross. Newent was a 9 hole par 36.
Never played either. I bought a particular brand of golf shoes for the wife which were stocked at Newent around 35 years ago.

When we arrived in Ledbury I played Malvern quite a bit. I was always nervous of the fairway that ran parallel with the car park full of new Rovers and Jags.

My dad played Burghill every weekday for years. It was a nice up and down course but a fair old trek from Cradley. Mind you I played Cleeve Hill a lot which was even further and the wrong side of the Hills!

    Good morning, everyone.

Btw, when the site migrates presumably new accounts will be the order of the day?

If you can get the data out of Vanilla in SQL or similar format, it should be easy enough to batch create accounts on Wordpress to import the users list, then write a script to email everyone with a password reset link.
If you want to transfer the comments surely that's the only viable way, or else there's no way to link the comments with the right user - someone could register someone else's name which we would not want doing.

Vanilla’s export options are outlined here: https://success.vanillaforums.com/kb/articles/1945-database-backup-and-data-export-options

None of it looks too mad.
That looks relatively straightforward, a MySQL file with almost the entire DB of users and comments. Wordpress will hopefully have a similar import facility (or Claude can write one relatively quickly) to move everything over.

A wry smile that the standard export also includes private DMs.

Whilst waiting for the Sinner-Zverev game to start we can look forward to this:

    Dan Neidle
    @DanNeidle

Andy Burnham's backed a land value tax for 16 years. This Sunday we'll be publishing an analysis of how an LVT would work in practice.

Plus a model that lets you design an LVT and answer the key questions: Who'd win? Who'd lose? And the big question: can it be done at all?

    https://x.com/DanNeidle/status/2075615378621780313

Land Value Tax feels like a solution looking for a problem, where you could get 80% of the good juice with some basic reforms of the property rating system.

    Not an expert though.
    My suggestions would be
    1. Rates based on typical (not actually charged) rents for that type of property: encourages adding value to the property as you wouldn't pay higher rates. Discourages deliberately reducing rents to gain lower rates.
    2. Rates paid by property owners, not renters. Encourages realistic rents as these now include taxes. Particular issue for pubs.
    3. Some relief possible for empty properties, but temporary and not 100%: encourages exploitation and discourages landowners from sitting on property and/or expecting unrealistic rents.
You are clearly an accountant, or someone who thinks accountants deserve to make money.

0.49% on all land regardless of use, no exceptions, no reliefs
My ideas are half arsed, but vaguely thinking of how a surveyor might get a ballpark value or rental figure without visiting the property or considering the condition, using an online calculator. ie type of property, location, square metres etc. No accountants, and importantly, no revaluations required.

Whatever property tax we come up with needs to be easy to calculate, collect, be able to raise large sums and be affordable.

A part of my prejudice against LVT is that I think there is a much better case in principle for abolishing private land ownership entirely. Land could be a public good, owned by the collective or state, which leases out exploitation rights on long leases. LVT seems neither one thing or the other.

    0.49% of what?
Isn't the key to this that is a slow burner. Keep people on the existing system until they move then they can make an educated decision. To make it even better allow councils to vary it by a small percentage +/-0.02% so they can actually do stuff other than pay for old people's arses to be wiped and kids to be kept in private equity care homes.
I think this debate is somewhat like the planning for HS2. The most important point is perhaps to make a start.

I think the questions about "but how do we revalue it all" or "what are they are worth" are non-questions, as long as we are basing it on market value of property. I think an LVT valuation is tricky because we are basing it around guesses around what a piece of 'land' WOULD be worth under certain imagined conditions.

We have sufficiently comprehensive databases already, in public hands and in private hands, to do the job of straight valuation. So I would start there, at pace, and want something in place to be the basis of a revised system to be used in FY 28-29,

I think part of the solution to PE is to incentivise locally managed voluntary institutions. That will have copmplexities, though, as PE and others try to avoid the system.

We already have part of the model under what I think is the only value based annual property levy we use - George Osborne's ATED * levy.

    * Annual Tax on Enveloped Dwellings - approx 0.5% to 1.25% of value, banded by property value from £500k, exemption for commercial rent for example). In practice aiui this is mainly a Central London tax on residencies owned by rich internationals, which does not raise massive amounts.

The best approach would be to wipe all comments and just let us start again. Jacques Derrida wrote that writing is inherently unstable and the original meaning begins to decay as soon as the words are formed. Therefore written forms thought only survive through continuous restatement and reinterpretation.

Also, consider the short story La biblioteca de Babel in Jorge Luis Borge's El jardín de senderos que se bifurcan on the futility of preservation.

It was nice and cool here last night, but very hot inside - the cross-ventilation dropped my house's internal temperature by about 4C. Max temperature here is forecast to be 27C. This place has a decrement delay of about 6-8 hours, so from here it would become uncomfortable by mid-late afternoon when the coolth has retreated and it was headed for 31-32C or more outside.

(I don't like it over about 26C inside).

New footage reportedly shows Sen. Mitch McConnell being loaded onto a stretcher and taken by ambulance after collapsing. EMS audio reportedly references an unconscious patient in cardiac arrest with CPR in progress, according to CNN.

    Not just Jennings.

..A spokesperson for Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said he had spoken with McConnell by phone on Monday and that the two had a "lengthy and substantive conversation that covered a variety of topics, including national security."..

..Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso, the No. 2 Senate Republican, had a 20-minute conversation with McConnell on Tuesday, according to a spokeswoman. The two discussed Senate races ahead of the midterm elections, the Supreme Court and other topics, the statement said..
Perhaps the funniest one was CNN quoting Rep. Jack Kimble.

There is no Rep. Kimble, it’s a parody account.

Vanilla’s export options are outlined here: https://success.vanillaforums.com/kb/articles/1945-database-backup-and-data-export-options

None of it looks too mad.
That looks relatively straightforward, a MySQL file with almost the entire DB of users and comments.

A wry smile that the standard export also includes private DMs.
A reminder that lots of things you might think are private, are not actually private.

I didn't understand a single word of that, which is why I'm helping the process by not offering my services.
It’s simple enough, a database is basically a big fancy spreadsheet, with many sheets and many references between them.

The more difficult thing to do, having imported all of the users and comments, is testing stuff like a new user signing up doesn’t have an ID of 1, but has an ID higher than all of the existing users, and that a new user’s name is checked against all of the imported users, not just users created using the Wordpress interface.

Does seem somewhat OTT to preserve dialogues whose original purpose is lost in time and subject to reinterpretation, probably incorrectly. The bonus being there is little additional work.

Yes, I sort of agree. The body of work of each PBer (esp the deeper ones) can take on new and different meanings as the world in which it resides evolves. I'd give an example but I don't think what I'm talking about can be illustrated in that way.

Point is, the PB posting history should be thought of as a living thing - and thus a terrible thing to lose.

What's the line about comedy depending on context?

A bloke with a bin on his head isn't that funny, really. It might work as a short-run running joke, like Graham Chapman's Colonel, or Mr Muzak the Piano Man from Absolutely.

Nigel Farage calling a by-election and then finding that he will have to spend a month arguing with a bloke with a bin on his head is so funny that even Rachel Reeves can deadpan the gag and it works.

Worth bearing in mind that there are places that store passwords as plain text fields, rather than encrypted or as a hash. So it's a really bad plan to reuse passwords across different logins.

I won't tell you how I know this, as I might want work from them in the future. And anyway, they did fix that, and the storing unencrypted credit card details was worse.

Revolut will create a disposable one-use card for you to use with online transactions so you don't have to worry about your card details being stolen in a hack. Would recommend.

Assuming that Derrida said that, then if he is correct in his post modernism we don't have any reliable way of knowing what it meant at the time, as there are no fixed meanings, nor can we know what it means now, as it is decayed and subject to constant reinterpretation. So the thought, if it were true, suffers, like the axioms of logical positivism, from self referential incoherence. And anyone wanting to rescue a pristine core meaning from this or anything Derrida has written is, by doing so denying Derrida's intentions. So in his world my thought that Derrida was an old fraud is immune from criticism.

Perhaps Robert will know the exact number from the admin console, but PB averages somewhere around 1,000 comments per day.

So there’s going to be a ballpark 3-4 million comments in the database.

If you want to transfer the comments surely that's the only viable way, or else there's no way to link the comments with the right user - someone could register someone else's name which we would not want doing.

Vanilla’s export options are outlined here: https://success.vanillaforums.com/kb/articles/1945-database-backup-and-data-export-options

None of it looks too mad.
That looks relatively straightforward, a MySQL file with almost the entire DB of users and comments.

A wry smile that the standard export also includes private DMs.
A reminder that lots of things you might think are private, are not actually private.
Indeed. Anything you do on a website is likely to be visible to the admins, if no-one else. Your password will be hashed rather than encrypted, so they shouldn't be able to get that. But private messages, public posts, etc. will all be visible.

Just to clarify the difference between encrypting and hashing for anyone non-technical... Encryption is a two-way process. If I have the keys, I can decrypt anything that has been encrypted. Hashing is in some ways similar to encryption in that it scrambles the password, but it is a one-way process. There is no way to get back from the hash to the original password.

As a side-note, I remember in the late 1980s discovering that the email software my employer used could be hacked easily. Passwords were stored encrypted. When a user logged in, instead of encrypting the password entered and comparing that with the one stored, it decrypted the stored password and compared that with the one entered. Using debug (which was part of MS-DOS), it was easy to put a breakpoint in the right place so you could see the decrypted password.

Think of the poor doctoral candidates for political history. No letters to read, email used less and less, WhatsApp on delete….

PB comments might be a big chunk of what’s left.

    Now that is scary.
Perhaps Robert will know the exact number from the admin console, but PB averages somewhere around 1,000 comments per day.

So there’s going to be a ballpark 3-4 million comments in the database.
Of which there will be about 300k - 400k arguing about Brexit.
    300k - 400k arguing about housing
    600k - 800k talking about sport

And about 30k-40k tips on political betting.

On the other hand, read Ian McEwan's latest novel - What We can Know.
