England's Kane confirms golf outing with Trump, praises president's game
    ...
Speaking on Friday on the eve of their World Cup quarter-final match against Norway, Kane confirmed the round took place in Palm Beach, Florida, about 18 months ago.
    ...
Trump had complimented the Bayern Munich forward on his Truth Social platform following England's 3-2 last-16 victory over Mexico, writing: "Harry Kane of England is a GREAT player!!!"

Japan's pension pivot puts Abe-era outpouring of capital in reverse
    ...
On Friday, Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama floated an idea to encourage the $1.8 trillion Government Pension Investment Fund (GPIF) and other retirement vehicles to increase their holdings of domestic assets.

    https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/takaichis-pension-pivot-seeks-reverse-abe-era-outpouring-japanese-capital-2026-07-10/ (£££)

Rachel Reeves has similarly been trying to encourage savings here, although if she (or her successor) is not careful, it will just mean more invested in US stocks rather than British shares.

These sorts of move might also increase pressure on government bonds which is not necessarily good news.

I'm currently on holiday but fel obliged to comment on Ann Widdicombe.

It is entirely possible to disagree with just about everything that someone says an believes in, yet to have the utmost respect for them.

Ann was a complete one - off.

She was utterly transparent, what you saw was what you got.

Her death in this way was a tragedy.

It would be a small crumb of comfort to find out that it was perpetrated by whoever on grounds that were nothing at all to do with Politics. That seems probably the case.

She lived in an area of great beauty and almost complete isolation.

She should be remembered fondly as a genuine person the like of which we will not see again.

Very good post. I think this shows you can fundamentally disagree with people’s politics and world view but can have respect for them . This reminds me a bit of what I’d call the old timers in the Commons who were for years pro Brexit even when it wasn’t fashionable. Whilst totally disagreeing with them on that I still respect that it was their principled position as opposed to some who jumped on the bandwagon for their political ambitions . No one deserves such a horrible fate that happened to poor Ann Widdecombe . It would seem very strange if this had a political motive as she wasn’t a high profile politician anymore .

Indeed, her politics were awful, however no one deserves to meet their maker on account of their politics which is why Tatchel's intervention was so unwelcome. It will be interesting to see whether Farage uses the tragedy to toxify the well.

Well said, and good that most people are willing to say the same regardless of political affiliation. Sadly not all people, but definitely most.

Sadly I logged off yesterday thinking that Miss Widdecome had succumbed to an illness, unaware that she had been murdered.

She may have had a high-profile career as a public servant, but in retirement she was quite literally the little old lady you know from church.

We don’t yet know the motive, perhaps it was a house robbery gone wrong rather than a targeted killing or politically motivated, but it seems unfathomable why someone would want to murder that little old lady.

I once saw some footage of Trump playing golf at Turnberry.

Every time he wanted to play a shot, his aide would carefully place the ball in front of wherever he'd pulled up his golf cart.

Now, that was a practice round, by himself. But he later tweeted about how well he'd played the course.

Or to put it another way - I'll believe stories about his brilliance on the golf course when I've actually seen hard evidence for them.

As I say, I'll believe it when I see it, and that's not from footage of somebody placing balls in front of him for him to play.

My grandfather at 86 could play a par 73 course in 90 shots, walking, playing as it lay. *That's* somebody who was a good player for his age. I see no evidence Trump is even in the same parish.

I hate to indulge in the trivial when the murder of Ann Widdecombe is still fresh, but I need to moan about a film. IMHO, there are/were three perfect films: Alien, Manhunter, Apocalypse Now. Recently they have been disfigured by "director's cuts": Alien has a variant (not too bad but entirely unnecessary and worse than the original) and Apocalypse Now was ruined by the "Final Cut" (it's just rubbish). Now Michael Mann did the Final Cut for Manhunter and the 4k version is now out, being rereleased in September. The person in the back row silently weeping salty tears will be me. Why can't they leave well enough alone?

I haven't seen the other two, but Manhunter (1986) is very close to being THE perfect film. Never get tired of watching it.
I can't think of a film to rival it in the serial killer genre. Unless you count Don't Look Now.
Holy Spider and Memories of a Murder are both better. IMO.
Agreed on both Memories of Murder* (for those who haven't seen it, the director and lead were Oscar winners for Parasite), and the lack of Mondial hate.

*Based on S Korea's most notorious serial murder case, which their directors are obsessed with.

Ann was a complete one - off.

She was utterly transparent, what you saw was what you got.

I'd guess Crick didn't have much time for her politics either.

    https://x.com/MichaelLCrick/status/2075728021328159119
    A former BBC colleague says:
"Of the hundreds of high profile politicians I dealt with as a floor manager Ann stood out as one who was unfailingly sweet and personable. In those high pressure moments of appearing on Newsnight to be interviewed by Jeremy, it was unremarkable if MPs were terse or barely noticed you were there, but she was a pleasure to bring into the studio, lovely to deal with.
    What absolute horror."

It's not quite the same thing because the killer isn't serial but the Argentinian film, El secreto de sus ojos is an excellent treatment of similar themes.

Ridiculous odds for Reform. They're surely value at that price given they must be 1/20 in the real world.
