  • Yes, it's been ages since we last had riots triggered by the slaughter of three young children.

"Triggered by" meaning, used as excuse for hate-mongering assholes to dishonor the memory of the victims?

Best let "Le(er)on" conduct extensive testing, to ensure the machine does NOT decide to rip of your family jewels.

Genuinely think there is a potential anti pet movement out there waiting to coalesce. Particularly since the pandemic, pets have encroached on what were human only spaces.

We have dog friendly cafes and restaurants. Near me there is a normal swimming pool with a dog friendly day.

But the English love their pets. Perhaps more than they love their children.

The English have always loved pets but I feel the obsession with dogs in particular is perhaps starting to go a bit far. On my street nearly everyone seems to have acquired a dog since the pandemic, and most of the cats have disappeared. And I prefer cats to dogs.

Potato, potato. One funeral was held yesterday (Sunday) and features on a number of newspaper front pages, along with the parents' plea for no more disorder.

What, don't you love children enough to set fire to a hotel full of asylum seekers?

I completely understand. I grew up in a pet-owning family, and I GREW OUT OF IT, when I realised it is quite perverse, keeping live animals as weird neutered slaves, solely for amusement, to make up for some creepy social deficit in the owner

Honestly, in about 100 years we will look back on pet-owning - and, to be fair, meat-eating of slaughtered sentient creatures - the way we look back on human slavery now
Didn't take long to get from "racist rioters have got a point" to "slavery wasn't really that bad", did it?

Dude who eats dogs muses on the morality of having pets.

Surely My Way is one song that it's ok to do your own way?
It's originally a French song, "Comme d'habitude". Slightly different sentiment to the UK funeral play out.

This Kursk invasion must be causing worries in Moscow, and not just due to the "normal" grabbing of territory.

There's now no border infrastructure. Lots of Russians are fleeing.

Surely it is now all too easy to send in special forces in civilian cars during the chaos?
Russia is now evacuating civilians from a large area of Kursk Oblast. Their military units in the area already evacuated, unlikely to be their most skilled divisions, are being picked off by Ukranian special forces with night vision equipment that the Russians don’t have.

Meanwhile, Ukranian drones attacked an airbase near Moscow overnight, said to be home to a number of ‘special mission aircraft’. https://x.com/osinttechnical/status/1822765556593770874
These aircraft are things like flying radar and command posts, very rare and valuable targets, mostly Soviet-era and irreplaceable if lost.

Two friends of mine, been going out for 10 years (now married), feel subsequently mature and financially secure enough to... consider having a dog.

I would have a cat in an instant but they constantly go missing in a city. What you want is one of these hardy town cats that fight foxes, wait at zebra crossings and have a 5 mile range with 16 different owners.

It's an interesting discussion, but going off on a tangent you were critical of roger the other day for not knowing a story, and worse you were rude, having listed out a whole pile of events, because I admitted to not knowing all of them, but did know most, yet you had no idea about the isse of dog flea treatment impacting river insects which has been reported umpteen times over the years.

Are they going to shoot down one of their own airliners, or accidentally strafe Gaza and then blame Israel?

    This argument appears to be:
Cookie: The beautification of Britain is a good idea, and the Tories ought to use it as part of an offer to widen their appeal.
MexicanPete: But I hate the Tories.

I'm not arguing about whether or not the Tories are good. I'm arguing that this is something good they could usefully and distinctively be in favour of.
But why would they? It's against all their instincts, certainly those of the last fourteen years. Is there a vote in it for them? That would be their litmus test.

We have had a dog for the past 6 months. First time ever. I never wanted one, but Wor Lass was desperate for a dog. Arrived as a 2 month old puppy.

This morning, dog started barking at 6.15 when our Riverford delivery arrived and wouldn't stop. So I had to get up. Me now up, dog fast asleep.

    Don't get a dog!!!

But once you do, it is too late. You love them to bits, and couldn't be without them.

Harris at 2.6 on betfair to take NC - I think that's value.

Leon would have to be careful though. Imagine if he got a Labrador. He'd be sitting up all night worrying that there might be a Lab leak.

Dogs aren't slaves, it's very much a two way relationship between humans and dogs, and one of the most durable in human history. That's probably why @Leon doesn't get it.

Problem is, there's only 70-odd quid available at that price...

Trump took it by 1.35% in 2020.

So Kamala is doing around 1% better than Biden did in 2020

On at 2.7, but only a few quid.
It's possible that state markets never offer decent odds in volume. Even those who think Trump might win are going to be chary of building significant short positions at long odds.

Interesting spin on why Trump is holding so few rallies: https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2024/8/11/2262167/-Deadbeat-Don-Why-He-s-Not-Holding-Rallies?pm_campaign=front_page&pm_source=trending&pm_medium=web

Basically, he left a strew of unpaid bills across the country in 2016 and 2020 and very few towns will allow him to hold one without paying all the clean up costs up front because he doesn't pay his bills.

Of course he was also famous for not paying his lawyers bills (a truly shocking flaw) but he now needs them much more than they need him so they are getting the priority on available cash.

In response to an interview question, “What is a great lover?” the Actor Ricardo Montalban, famously replied, “A great lover is someone who can satisfy one woman her entire lifetime and be satisfied with one woman his entire lifetime. It is not someone who goes from woman to woman; any dog can do that.”

And he was married to the same woman for 63 years.

It's absolutely ridiculous. You cannot escape dogs now.

And, in our culture, if you don't particularly care for dogs that's your problem.

They definitely do, and certainly more than other people's children.

It's fundamentally misanthropic: we see children as little adults in the making (who we also don't like) and would prefer not to deal with.

No other European country seems to have this problem.
