As a Labour party member I am rooting for Liz Truss with everything I have. As a UK citizen with kids and a grandchild, the thought of her in charge scares the life out of me.

Why ? She wont do anything other than tinker in the 20 months left before she has to call a GE..
Bloody hell. I wanted Liz Truss to do reasonably well and retain a senior cabinet position whispering sweet libertarian nothings in PM Rishi Sunak's ear. I didn't want her to actually win...
If I was a politician aspiring to high office I would try to hire Andrew Neil to put me through an intense "boot camp" training. Failing that hire a set of smart opinionated individuals for a series of private brutal, no hold barred debates on the key topics and the left-field ones.
Failing that join PB under an alias and try out my arguments / policy positions there.
Current level of political practice (all parties) varies between barely adequate to utterly amateur and ignorant.
"Totally on-brand for ERG to back a truly useless Remainer who did nothing in govt except gabble with hacks cos she’s reassuringly mad behind the eyes. 🤡 🤡 🤡🤡🤡"
IDS on Sky news looking very happy with himself as Truss gained 27 MPs to 19 for Rishi and 13 for Penny and goes through to the membership vote. Though his seat is very marginal
It's all very well playing 3d politics chess on here... but this plan could have backfired in (at least) 2 ways. 1) What if some of your 'backers' secretly vote for someone else... by loaning votes you mind end up losing yourself 2) Maybe Rishi would rather face Truss because even if he loses, he'd rather lose to someone with more experience of government & not have Penny Mordaunt as PM.

Trade war with the EU, for starters. Tax cuts funded by borrowing, for seconds. Someone always desperately seeking to prove they are the most right wing person in the room is fine if they are not Prime Minister. When they are it becomes a major concern.
Straight out the traps, these attack lines have just gone out to all Labour MPs. Choosing two candidates who are both experienced cabinet ministers had its downsides… your opponents know what to do
Rishi Rishi Rishi, you could have put Truss out if you handed some votes over...
Penny is a bigger risk than Liz, IMO. Her tax and spend plan was simply unhinged.
She's much less experienced, of course, so, yes, in that sense she's a bigger risk. She also seems to be pretty thick.
OTOH we know that Liz Truss is an unexploded bomb in terms of NI and the EU. Not clear at this stage if she can be defused.
What do you expect the EU to do if Liz Truss wins?
Nothing particularly, other than roll their eyes and chuckle at the further decline of a once-great nation.
It's more what Liz Truss might do if she wins which is the issue. There must, after all, be a non-negligible risk that she'll do what she's said she'll do.

He's probably happy that the Tories will now have an even worse leader than even he was lol!
Good afternoon from the North of Scotland where we have been entertained to the red arrows as it is RAF Lossiemouth open day
Since crossing the border yesterday, and travelling through Scotland you just can understand the utter disgust the Scots have for this farce at Westminster and why the desire for independence is so understandable
Sunak v Truss arguing for the next month is the conservative party's act of utter self indulgence, with no recognition of the public's concerns or even their future prospects of not only retaining power but actually being in power again for years
As a conservative it does distress me, but a period in opposition is beckoning and hopefully the lib dems can hold labour from its worst excesses
However, having returned to my wife's family roots it is clear the question of independence will have to be addressed by whoever is in No 10, as the present situation is only going to fester and as long as it does independence will become more likely month by month

Indeed, Truss winning will see her NI Protocol Bill will fix the problems with the NI Protocol and the EU will do nothing particular about it, because they're impotent and can't do anything about it.
And then the EU and NI issues will be resolved and we can all be happy.

Trade war 2 years before an election ? Nah.
Tax cuts will more than pay for themselves as all intelligent students of the Laffer curve will confirm.

But this is how 2016 was always likely to end... perhaps how it has to end. As long as Brexit is a disappointment, and as long as there is a purer, stronger, more alpha Brexit to be tried, there will be political mileage in pressing the "blow everything up" button. If Truss can be hauled back, there will be others to take her place.
Obviously, it will be better all round not to press that button, but the point of easy return was passed a long time ago.

Why do you expect the EU to initiate a trade war and what do you think it will mean in practice?
I expect them to do it after Truss forces the NIP legislation through Parliament and then breaks international law by implementing it. In practice, it will make an already sub-optimal trading relationship with our biggest export market even worse.
The Conservative party is the natural party of government.
Discuss.
Well, their record since Disraeli shows they are... but periodically they send themselves off into the wilderness, preferring to choose ideological purity over governing. Interestingly it tends to happen after long periods in government...
Particularly notable the 1905-1915 peiod (after Sailisbury's long run in office) and of course 1997 to 2005 (after Thatcher)
Clearly it's happening again and they'll be in Opposition after the next election. Then we'll see what happens.
A question to my Tory friends: does it feel like Tory Corbyn is on the way
I will say many things about Liz Truss and I will not vote for a Tory Party led by her.
But she is not Tory Corbyn.
She is just a bad candidate whose policies aren’t going to appeal to the country and has zero charisma. She is no way near as… problematic… as Corbyn was in many areas.

I think once Boris is out of the picture and she's in No 10 a deal will be done. It suits her to get it out of the way quickly and move on to CoL stuff rather than have it dominate the agenda for months while people are unable to afford to fill up.

And may the Lord have mercy on your soul.
Liz Truss sits on another MP (2018).
Edit: Javid apparently
PM Liz.
Dear god.
Meanwhile in Labour HQ it's party time.. 6 weeks of the Tory party tearing itself apart...
2 spoiled ballots is tremendous.
Great result from the MPs. Absolutely perfect. Delighted! 🤑
Mordaunt didn't have a great campaign, but I think she's entitled to feel aggrieved at the way that Dacre & Verity took against her.
They could easily have put Penny in the Final.
Total insanity.

He was in trouble with either of them.
Still think the 105 should get to vote again - so we'd know if there is overwhelming backing for either candidate.
@Mike_Fabricant
It was close. I’m sad Penny didn’t make it.
I now back Liz Truss. She stayed loyal to the end and didn’t plot and scheme against #Boris."

The membership can’t get this wrong HY, it’s like a simple choice between sane and insane. Its stark.
They can’t get it wrong.
That isn't great.

You seem to have been out of line with the membership throughout.
We look to you as a voice of the membership but it seems you are growing apart from them.
Meanwhile we agree. I have identified the bonkers, Anyone But Rishi movement in the membership for some time.
Any chance there are enough sane (r) heads such as your own?
No doubt someone will point out the last time this rule was broken!
What makes you think I am not Liz Truss?
"I'm ready to hit the ground from day one."
...................................................................
Well quite ..
And then the EU and NI issues will be resolved and we can all be happy.
Rishi = Javid
Truss = Clark
Foreign Office
Rishi = Truss
Truss = Cleverly
My guess.
FFS sort yourself out and find ways of doing more of that.
