Martin Powell, a member of Southport Liberal Democrats, emails to point out that one of descriptions registered by the party to use on ballot papers is "Nick Clegg's Liberal Democrats". But, he says, "so toxic is the name Nick Clegg thought to be that in spite of a few of us looking for candidates describing themselves as this on ballot papers nationally, we have been unable to find a single one".
Anyone else?

I think that just about every Scot who was in a polling booth voting today and saw "Scottish Conservatives – No to independence" will be very clear on the message it intended to convey despite your smeary spin attempts in that post!Carnyx said:
Now the polls are closed: one thing that startled me in the Scottish Euro ballot paper, apart from the choice of Britain First, BNP and UKIP as well as Tories, was that the Tories described themselves as "Scottish Conservatives – No to independence". The unanswered question of this rather obvious dog-whistle was, independence from whom? London or Brussels?
Apart from wondering if they had perhaps got their polls mixed up, I thought it looked odd in that Euro context - as if the Tories were claiming to be a hard Europhile party. I'm not sure it made much difference, but it couldn't have helped the loss of votes to UKIP.0 -
Depends - on a normal election night this would be good for Labour - tonight it could be all those UKIPPERSSocrates said:Reading all the anecdotes from the last couple of threads makes it sound like turnout is up a fair bit. That has to mean Labour are most likely to win, no?

Lead story on the Express tomorrow:
http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/477557/Conservatives-failing-in-bid-to-cut-migration-as-it-RISES-20-per-cent
This news coming at the same time as the Tories are solidly beaten by UKIP in the Euro will surely force Cameron to act. People in wealthy metropolitan circles think of immigration as this difficult issue that flares up now and again, but they forget about it when the newspapers aren't running with it for a while. But as long as half a million people turn up in this country every year, it's going to continue to drive people's politics. Most people in this country actually quite like British culture, and they can tell it's getting diluted year on year. Any Conservative party that doesn't get a grip on this will just do poorer and poorer.0 -
No. Nigel Farage has gotten people voting again. He's gotten people caring again. He's making people argue and discuss politics in a way that hasn't happened since 1997.Socrates said:

I'm going to be at one of the Northern Ireland council counts tomorrow morning. I don't know how many on here have experience of a STV count but it can be quite exciting as candidates are eliminated and transfers and vote management makes the difference in deciding the latter seats. Last time the final council seat in my area was decided by a half vote surplus.0
-
That's a real shame. I sat next to McCallister at dinner a couple off years back and really liked what he was trying to doY0kel said:In NI, we have both local council elections for the new merged councils (going from 26 to 11) and, of course, the Euros.
We have also had the absolute implosion of NI's newest party, the god awfully named NI21 which started as a liberal unionist party under the auspices of two ex UUP MLAs (Basil McCrea & John McCallister). 48 hours before the elections, the two MLAs decided to have a complete separation and the party is on its knees.
Nominally the issue is one about designation in the NI Assembly, the party was designated Unionist then suddenly Basil McCrea decided it should be 'other' promptly hacking off McCallister.
This is just one mere outward symptom of the problem, which is actually Basil McCrea, who has an ego the size of a small province. The man has poor judgement and I suspect is not going to come out of this well. Believe me some serious stories about this guy.
Meanwhile the germ of an idea that had potential, that of a Unionist party for those that didn't want to wear a Sash, has been shat upon.0 -
