BREAK: Darroch resigns. I thought he’d have to go. Position untenable if totally frozen out of White House pic.twitter.com/inx3oz1h55

Boris Johnson is neither of those things.
Tweet of the week.
Boris does not come out of this well
Take Back ControlThis is what Sovereignty after Brexit looks like...
Well, if they can suggest a non diplomat like Farage.....
But if this is a harbinger of a Boris premiership I think I’ll remain a member but stop campaigning until we return to sanity.
Although if Boris revokes or goes for a very long transition then I may revise my views.
At which point it would get exciting. The failure to give our man in Washington support for saying in private what everyone says in public may be a big mistake for Boris, and looks wrong to many of his natural sympathisers.
Funnily though, when it was first launched hardly anyone could work out what use it would be or why it would work as a service.
Never mind if not the big major news story of the day.
We need to know what happened behind the scenes.
It looks terrible on TV. Just a ranty, raving old man. Maybe it works on social media as a very short clip.
I don't know his views or his ambitions, but if Kim Darroch wanted to run in Uxbridge as a Martin Bell 'white suit' candidate at the next election, I'd be right behind him.
Thankfully, nothing he can say today will prevent that shitstorm from happening tonight.
And he deserves all he gets from that
Shame that Darroch felt he had to do this. Whoever leaked that info is a wretch.
Cameron was a step up from Brown, perhaps chaos with Ed Miliband would have been the better choice with hindsight long term though. Was tricky to see that in 2015 mind..
It shouldn't have been leaked and we should investigate and punish whoever did it, but our diplomatic corps need to realise leaks are quite probable in the internet age. Shouldn't be, but are. Pandora's Box can't be closed.
I hope all Tory members who are merrily voting for Boris can live with themselves.
Whoever leaked should be in jail but realistically the moment this was published he was doomed. He should have fallen on his sword days ago.
Then they are distributed to lots of people within HMG, one of whom gave them to a "journalist"
He was entitled to confidentiality and support which is evident across the political spectrum today, apart from Boris who comes out of this with a big fail
His first act, before he gets the gig, a major International humiliation.
Get used to it
Wikileaks have gotten their hands on a plethora of diplomatic cables over the past decade. People keep acting like this is unprecedented and it just isn't.
We can only hope that he is No Confidenced in September before too much damage has been done.
Desperate, desperate, desperate.
Liam Fox called it correctly IMO
Darroch didn't have a choice - nothing to do with what Johnson said last night, everything to do with the leaker and the response from the White House.
Darroch knew he couldn't carry on in the role when he was cut off from access from the people he needed to work with in order to do his job. So he had to resign - which he has done, with honour.
The fault lies with who arranged the leaks.
Trump wanted him sacked.
There’s a big difference
If you can't see that we are just giving in to an overgrown baby and bully to boot then you are entirely missing the point. This is a glimpse of our future after Brexit with Johnson playing Trump's poodle. Any trade deal will be what Trump decides it will be and if we argue he'll throw another tantrum
The simple fact is there is a jerk in the White House
But if he refuses to work with our ambassador that’s something we need to adjust to.

“Respect [in parliament] for Boris has taken a real nosedive today”
“Just being a supplicant like this seems to be a Boris attitude”
“Instead of a fresh start with a clean slate in a mood of national confidence, Boris now looks rather tawdry”
