BREAK: Darroch resigns. I thought he’d have to go. Position untenable if totally frozen out of White House pic.twitter.com/inx3oz1h55

Darroch is a man of honour and integrity.
Boris Johnson is neither of those things.1 -
Will May appoint a new ambassador?0
-
Can we bet on the next ambassador?0

At least one person in all this still has class.1

As the Slovenian PM said: you'll find it is very cold outside the EU.0

It means a proper process toward a new permanent appointment can be made before Bozo gets to slip in a crony.0

A wise decision by Darroch. He is entirely blameless in this matter but his position was untenable and unlike so many commentators has the intelligence to recognise the need to resign. Hunt comes well out of this - Boris rather less so.0
-
He most certainly is honourable and his resignation is very regretfulTheScreamingEagles said:Darroch is a man of honour and integrity.

Boris does not come out of this well0 -
Presumably, Johnson will consult closely with Trump to ensure that the next ambassador meets with his approval.0

We must sincerely hope not. Ideally May should make the call herself - it would be a very good test of how he wishes to proceed.SouthamObserver said:Presumably, Johnson will consult closely with Trump to ensure that the next ambassador meets with his approval.

But if this is a harbinger of a Boris premiership I think I’ll remain a member but stop campaigning until we return to sanity.
Although if Boris revokes or goes for a very long transition then I may revise my views.0 -

I wonder is all this increases the chances of enough MPs indicating they would not have confidence in Boris that it will prevent TM advising HM the Queen that he should be invited to form a government.
At which point it would get exciting. The failure to give our man in Washington support for saying in private what everyone says in public may be a big mistake for Boris, and looks wrong to many of his natural sympathisers.1 -

The problem with the way Seamus wants Jezza to approach PMQs is that it is all about raising an issue that will give them a few seconds of vid for campaigning social media.
Never mind if not the big major news story of the day.0 -
I am genuinely sorry this has happened to the Conservative party - on a personal level for good people - with whom I completely disagree - such as you, Richard N, Mr G, etc - but, more importantly, for the country.TheScreamingEagles said:

I think it is absolutely essential that the person responsible for the leak is identified. If that means prosecuting journalists, fine.0

Was Hunt involved in this decision? He is the Foreign Office minister.
We need to know what happened behind the scenes.0 -
-
See what I mean, Jezza now shouting and ranting about 'go home' vans.
It looks terrible on TV. Just a ranty, raving old man. Maybe it works on social media as a very short clip.0 -
TM really on good form and we are about to replace her with Boris !!!!!
1 -
Ugh. Inevitable but it feels the chaos of Trump and of Brexit has consumed us now.
I don't know his views or his ambitions, but if Kim Darroch wanted to run in Uxbridge as a Martin Bell 'white suit' candidate at the next election, I'd be right behind him.2 -
It was a typical performance from Allotment Man. He is trying to get some clips out to deflect attention from what is going to hit the Labour Party tonight.rottenborough said:See what I mean, Jezza now shouting and ranting about 'go home' vans.

Thankfully, nothing he can say today will prevent that shitstorm from happening tonight.
And he deserves all he gets from that0 -
The problem with Twitter is that it doesn't give people time to cool off. When people used to write letters, they'd often write angry messages and rip them up later on before actually posting them.rottenborough said:0 -

Good afternoon, everyone.
Shame that Darroch felt he had to do this. Whoever leaked that info is a wretch.0 -
Is Blackford capable of asking a question? Seems to me that he just likes to rant.0

Cameron was a step up from Brown, perhaps chaos with Ed Miliband would have been the better choice with hindsight long term though. Was tricky to see that in 2015 mind..0 -
Surely game was up when Trump chose to freeze him out? An Ambassador who is frozen out is not much of an Ambassador.SouthamObserver said:

He was entitled to confidentiality and support which is evident across the political spectrum today, apart from Boris who comes out of this with a big fail0 -

Wikileaks have gotten their hands on a plethora of diplomatic cables over the past decade. People keep acting like this is unprecedented and it just isn't.0 -

Nandy doesn't quite get the way the world works.Scott_P said:
Darroch didn't have a choice - nothing to do with what Johnson said last night, everything to do with the leaker and the response from the White House.
Darroch knew he couldn't carry on in the role when he was cut off from access from the people he needed to work with in order to do his job. So he had to resign - which he has done, with honour.
The fault lies with who arranged the leaks.2 -

If you can't see that we are just giving in to an overgrown baby and bully to boot then you are entirely missing the point. This is a glimpse of our future after Brexit with Johnson playing Trump's poodle. Any trade deal will be what Trump decides it will be and if we argue he'll throw another tantrum0 -

Alan Duncan on BBCPL now - “angry with Johnson”
“Respect [in parliament] for Boris has taken a real nosedive today”
“Just being a supplicant like this seems to be a Boris attitude”
“Instead of a fresh start with a clean slate in a mood of national confidence, Boris now looks rather tawdry”0
