@Morris_Dancer A quote that sums up Mrs Mensch well
@GIN1138 I'm really intrigued to see who will be the next Culture Secretary. So far May seems be shifting the Brexiteers into departments particularly affected by Brexit.0 -
It's the constituents they are leaving behind I agree, the new members are making it into a members club rather than a political party that has to speak to people that are not part of their core group of supporters.The_Apocalypse said:
This is what will kill Labour. The members idiotic nonsense that their views and ideas somehow take precedence over constituents. Another example as to how these people don't believe in parliamentary democracy, and actually have an incredible amount of contempt for the working classes. But they'll tell you they 'care' about them. They 'care' enough to put two fingers up to them, and their views....HaroldO said:So MP's would have to appeal to electorate and their own members at all times, even if the two are mutually exclusive in their goals? We are so southeast-centric in this country it's laughable. As it happens to be my neck of the woods, I'd be happy with other regions receiving far more of the focus, if nothing else to relieve the pressure on public services, roads, greenbelts etc here. Making it easier for Brummies to get to London should not be the focus; the focus should be on boosting jobs, opportunities, life in general in the Midlands - and in the northwest, northeast etc etc.nunu said:

That was the old Boris, though. One shouldn't assume that on any subject he thinks the same thing as he did a few weeks ago.rkrkrk said:Having Boris and Greening in senior cabinet positions probably means no Heathrow expansion? Or a further delay?
I think both have pledged to resign if that happened... wouldn't exactly look good to lose two Cabinet appointments just after making them.0 -
If he really wanted to go, why didn't he when offered a route by Tom Watson? I also thought Hodges reported that even McDonnell wanted Corbyn to go.rottenborough said:
Evidence? Nick Watt said on Newsnight the other day that that is precisely what happened. He was talked out of walking by Milne and McD.The_Apocalypse said:
Exactly. He's been like Mystic Meg gone wrong. Didn't he also tell us a week or so ago that Corbyn wanted to leave but Seamus Milne etc was pushing him to stay? It's quite clear that Corbyn never wanted to go in the first place.GIN1138 said:

Told Corbyn going to try to overturn the freeze date decision. He has to. He knows if he doesn't there's a strong chance he'll lose.0 -

I actually visited Newport station last Friday week (going from Brum to London), and last Tuesday week (going from London to Brum), my first visit to a Welsh train station since I did the Snowdon Railway in 1997John_M said:
It's only a couple of hours from darkest Newport. Perhaps there's an argument that we should be contriving to make it so people don't either want or need to go to London?Sunil_Prasannan said:
Even now I can get to Brum from London in 82 minutes, that's not too bad considering journey times in most of Kent and Sussex which are geographically much closer to London.nunu said:
I hope so, even Digby Jones said it would mean Birmingham becoming a commuter town of London in support of HS2, not sure if that's what the people of Brum want.David_Evershed said:Is Grayling pro or anti HS2 do we know?
Will May instruct him to prioritise the northern HS3 instead of the London orientated HS2?
I left Brum at 3.30pm got to Paddington at 7.30pm
Then on the return, left Paddington at 11.45am, got to Brum at 3.40pm.0 -

Er, we had something of that kind with BR:Jobabob said:
Why not just nationalise all commuter rail to TfL with Sadiq ultimately responsible as mayor? Has worked very well where done so far (WAGN, Romford line etc). Makes no sense fragmenting a commuter network. Clear lines of responsibility etc etc.JosiasJessop said:

Inter-City
Network South-East
All other provincial lines.
If I use a train, I'm paying my fare to a nationalised railway. Deutsche Bahn owns Arriva Trains Wales and at least one other franchise.
By returning expired franchises to an integrated government-owned body, the system could slowly be reunified and any profits could go to the Treasury, not the German govt.(!)0 -

My jury is still out.
If I were one of the young able Ministers of State from the talented 2010 intake, I'd be feeling more than a bit cheesed off...

Boris's own seat is probably pro-Heathrow, given that many of his constituents are employed there, directly or indirectly. Now he he is no longer London mayor chasing the votes of people from Richmond and Chiswick, I can't see any downside for Boris if he forgets his opposition to extra capacity there?Richard_Nabavi said:

On the topic of Heathrow: it was noticable that on R4 this morning, when asked about the airport decision, he did default to calling it the third runway, then corrected himself.
As for Minister for over rates, I concur. May is a cricket fan, I believe.0 -

But then we take away the drive to improve that the private sector has brought to the process. If the railways had stayed nationalised would they have expanded like they have in the last 20 years?rural_voter said:

What needs to happen is a clear plan of how to at least bring the current system under control, if this requires more state control then I am happy but I don't think governmental control is a panacea.0 -
