Fascinating London Underground fact. When it first opened people went down into the Tube to cool off. The temperature of the surrounding clay was only about 14C but 150 years of heat absorption has risen that to 19c-25C and as a result it’s a sweltering nightmare.
I doubt the ambient temperature of the clay is 19-25. Sorry. Do you have any evidence that this is the case?
Ok, but this isn't about the temperature of the clay.
Someone will no doubt know but my guess would be that the surroundings of the tunnels are 5c or so.
“The nub of the problem is that the biggest heat sink is failing as the temperature behind the walls rises way back into the clay. It’s now sitting at between 5C and 11C above the natural ambient of 14C.”
It's just not the case that 5m (say) below the ground the ambient temperature is 14c. (At least I think it isn't - Am looking online to find some evidence).
Why shouldn't it be? It's been London for rather a long time - lots of tarmac, lots of insolation, lots of sweaty yuppies, etc. And see this.
In part because it's freezing cold in the winter on the first, or near to first, tube.
Mainly though I just think that it isn't, and evidence one way or another seems to be tricky to find.
I think that is because they park the trains in the open overnight. Also (depending on where you are) many underground trains run in the open air at the further out legs - eg Northern Line through Cricklewood (I do know that from visiting the RAF Museum).
That's certainly true. However before you get on the train in the winter it can be very cold on the station. I'm nearly 100% certain that I'm right, but I can't find anything to prove it. I'm fairly sure you don't believe the natural ambient temperature of 14c anyway.
If I find anything I'll PM you.
That would also be because they have cold air coming in on the fans at night, and without the crowds and trains there's not so much heat to compensate. (In fact it's just as well it is cold in the morning so it takes longer to start cooking the self-loading cargo.)
Sudden thought: are you talking about the shallow Underground such as Circle and District? Or the deep bored Tube such as the Bakerloo? The former could well be chillier. The latter is where the heat problem is at, AIUI.
The 14c doesnt' sound off, certainly on the deeper (bored) Tube - there is definitely a thermal gradient. Heat pumps for home heating, remember?

Really?
I ask because if you go down a coal mine, it gets warmer the deeper you go.
“When the Bakerloo line opened in 1906, for example, advertisements paraded the tube as the coolest place to be in the hot summer weather. Two years later, that campaign stopped as platform and train temperatures started to get uncomfortable.”
I used to work in the oil service industry before I went into teaching, and we always worked on the rough figure of an increase of 1 degree C for every 100 feet of depth.

I somewhat doubt the 14 too. Seems far too hot.
It's not the ambient temperature of the clay though is it? There will be a temperature gradient from the tunnel walls to the clay well away from the tunnels. The latter might be 10-12C but the issue is how quickly the heat generated by the Tube (trains, people, etc.) can be conducted away by clay, a not very efficient conductor.

Two years later? That means that the cool air was very temporary. I don't think there could possibly be enough surface heat to warm up the clay 30 meters down in just two years.

Sounds like good advice. Our government should negotiate visa free entrance to Pakistan, Iran, Tajikistan etc, otherwise they will get stuck at the border.

It only has to increase the temperature of the clay immediately surrounding the tunnels.

Maybe it took that long to work it's way through the masonry and cladding of the stations and tunnels?

Sure, however the clay temperature was my original point.
I've not found any great sources on this, but this link sort of suggests that the ambient numbers are quite low.

Very problematic for Boris. Surely even he won't be stupid enough to implement the panic measure recommended by the PB Brexit Tories of artificial wage hikes. But if he loosens immigration controls that will kill the raison d'être for Brexit stone dead and Farage will be polling at 50%. Tricky.

That is AIUI the meteorological soil temperature, quite shallow. In that case it's some 0.1m (4"). And even that gives a mean temperature of 11.1degC. Deep down, the clay will be massively buffered by depth, so it's going to be relatively constant, and a bit warmer. Before any heat is pumped into it by 300-400 years of basements and the like.

It was still more than some folk were earning before. A wage increase for quite a lot of people.
Delivering another blow to what’s left of former Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s legacy, New York’s new governor acknowledged on her first day in office that the state has had nearly 12,000 more deaths from COVID-19 than Cuomo told the public.
“The public deserves a clear, honest picture of what’s happening. And that’s whether it’s good or bad, they need to know the truth. And that’s how we restore confidence,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said on NPR.
In its first daily update on the outbreak Tuesday evening, Hochul’s office reported that nearly 55,400 people have died of the coronavirus in New York based on death certificate data submitted to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Biden is an awful President who should never have won a primary let alone an election.
Still infinitely better than Trump. But the Democrats need to think hard on the primaries for 2024 or the GOP really will have an easy ride then (so long as they don't choose Trump again).
Only Biden could have beaten Trump imho.
That was his one last job.
I think the problem (and I’ve said this before) come aback to the lack of profile among Democratic candidates. All three of Obama’s two Secretaries of State and vice-President were in their 60s/70s in 2016. There were simply no younger candidates forcing their way through. Of those three, apart from age, Kerry was already a failed candidate and Hilary Clinton was incredibly divisive. That left Biden carrying the torch. And he did it very well - he said all the right things - but he’s not showing what’s needed now to sort things out.
Somewhere, a younger candidate in their fifties should have been brought forward, perhaps by Biden or Kerry resigning and being replaced by somebody younger, somebody being groomed for the succession. Bad oversight by Obama that he didn’t do it.
It is striking how US voters are willing to tolerate candidates way beyond the age at which most European countries would look for someone with a bit more energy.
I really don’t know whether the US clings onto some excessive respect for those with decades of experience, or whether the $-driven nature of US politics makes it difficult to get to the top of the greasy pole without decades of greasing the right palms and dispensing the right pork.
Oldest PMs by age of departure from office
Gladstone 84 Palmerston 80 Churchill 80 Disraeli 75 Lord John Russell 73 Lord Salisbury 72 Campbell Bannerman 71 Neville Chamberlain 71 The Duke of Portland 71 Lord Aberdeen 71 Earl Grey 70
It is to my mind rather striking that only one of those was elected via a general election in the age of universal suffrage.
Equally, of course, Palmerston probably would have won elections under any franchise even in his seventies.
(And to be controversial, Chamberlain would easily have won an election in October 1938, although fortunately he had more sense than to call one.)
You'd probably want to lop off about 5 years to their modern equivalents. Some of these were awful.

Low levels of natural immunity in unvaccinated residents could be why part of Somerset has the highest rates of coronavirus cases in England.
Director of Public Health for Somerset, Professor Trudi Grant, said that before the recent spike in Sedgemoor, the county had "very low infection rates".
Sedgemoor District Council's 723 cases per 100,000 is the highest in England.
Prof Grant said the majority of cases were in the younger population who were yet to receive their second jab.
"What you've got to bear in mind is that traditionally we've had very low infection rates in Somerset," she said.
"It has been lower than most parts of the UK and, as a result of that, we've got a lower level of natural immunity in our residents and in particular that younger population that haven't had full vaccination yet and, predominantly, that's where we're seeing most of the cases," she added.

Biden's rating is now nearer the lower range of Presidents at this stage of their Presidency, only Trump and Bill Clinton had lower ratings at this stage in the last 50 years. They both of course saw their parties trounced in their first midterms which does not bode well for the Democrats next year.
Biden will also clearly need to improve his rating if he wants to run again in 2024 with a good chance of being re elected

But this thread has no focus, no argument, no interesting anecdotes, no totally random but fascinating information, no feuds being invoked or settled. The best threads combine all of this.

You missed an opportunity when in Greece to head over the border to Bulgaria.
Its in the process of having a covid surge which will be the worst in Europe.
This bug is not going away. It will be with us forever. Like Flu, but probably a lot worse. It will kill many thousands every year, but we will also have fast evolving vaccines, to counter it. An endless arms race
Life expectancies will fall around the world, in response. Particularly amongst the co-morbid. Suddenly, being obese is not such a great life choice. That might not be such a bad thing
But Zero Covid is a delusion and we will all have to accept life is somewhat riskier than it was. That's the only way forward. It should not be impossible psychologically. Somehow we all accept that life carries with it a 100% risk of death, without freaking out

I agree with some of that, but sceptical about the life expectancy prediction. My guess is that life expectancy will continue to rise. The advance in general healthcare, science and adherence to science over superstition should counteract the effect of the virus.
1) where can you bet on next cabinet minister to leave?
2) re temperature surrounding the underground. There will be the background temperature of the clay. Then there will be the temperature around the tube, which will be highest at the wall and decay radially until it reaches the background temperature. With a ground source heat pump a metre down the temperature varies from say 15 degrees in the summer to about 7 or 8 degrees I think. With the pump running the temperature near the coils is depressed by a few degrees, it seems to go down to about 5 in the depths of winter when the heat is taken out. Pipes have to be a metre apart to stop the colder zones joining up. So presumably in the tube the temperature drop takes place over a few metres or perhaps a few tens of metres. So the volume isn't that great and I can easily believe wall temp more than 10 degrees over background.
Sorry for somewhat boring/rambling post but I can't really help being a physics/engineering nerd...
London yesterday – the touristy bits around Westminster and Trafalgar Square – not many black cabs about, and summoning an Uber took about 10 seconds (we nearly missed it, it was so fast).
No really awful ones. Russell and Campbell Bannermann weren’t great. Chamberlain had a lot of potential but was found wanting against a v tough test
Campbell Bannerman wasn't great? For ahame.
I thought Campbell Bannerman had a vastly larger number of seats at the 1906 election than poor old Johnson got in 2019.
And yet the Tory cheerleaders never stop talking about Johnson's 80 seat majority.
If that is the criterion, Campbell Bannerman wins hands down.
He was put into bat as a minority by Balfour, in sure and certain knowledge that his government would collapse, he'd be ousted, and the Tories returned with a stonking majority. Instead he gained 216 seats and a majority of 125.

Very problematic for Boris. Surely even he won't be stupid enough to implement the panic measure recommended by the PB Brexit Tories of artificial wage hikes. But if he loosens immigration controls that will kill the raison d'être for Brexit stone dead and Farage will be polling at 50%. Tricky.
The PM implements wage hikes for employees of private businesses? Who suggested that?
I must have missed the debates around the minimum wage, which sound awfully like that.
If he doesn't lift restrictions on immigration, or build new towns in the sticks such as Wizzy, what else can he do?
I forgot: he could ban or tax imports of furrin fish, veg and fruit.
He could stop the dole money of people who have been unemployed 3 months or more and won’t pick fruit/work in supermarket warehouses rather than sit on their fat arse and claim benefits
He'd need to deport them to the fields of East Anglia etc. Hence my remark on new towns. Which would go down really well in the Northern Red Wall.

I should have been more precise. I suspect life expectancies will fall, for a while, in the less healthy and more-obese-prone of advanced societies. So the USA, UK, Oz (eventually), UAE, Ireland, parts of eastern Europe, etc. Also developing places like Mexico, Argentina, Polynesia
That said, there may be highly successful therapies for Covid very soon, it is hard to say
I am pretty certain Covid-19 will be with us for decades

Sudden thought: are you talking about the shallow Underground such as Circle and District? Or the deep bored Tube such as the Bakerloo? The former could well be chillier. The latter is where the heat problem is at, AIUI.
The 14c doesnt' sound off, certainly on the deeper (bored) Tube - there is definitely a thermal gradient. Heat pumps for home heating, remember?

I doubt New York has been the only place under-reporting covid deaths.
