Surely Trump needs to be tried for sedition. He's incited a very large group of people to overthrow the government. That's a textbook definition of sedition the last time I checked.
I despise the man, but no way is Gove responsible for this.
Gove is not responsible. But he knew exactly what Trump was. He didn't care.
People cosying up even to an odious politician cannot be expected to be able to foresee that that person will one day engage in what amounts to a coup, don't be absurd. The licence to criticise someone for cosying up to someone they can reasonable foresee will do awful political things does not extend that far, since virtually no one would think a stable democracy like the US might lead to this in 4 years.
It's a coordinated mob, urged on by an individual and tacitly (though not directly) supported by many many many members of Congress, storming the legislature to prevent the law being carried out, and some of them are armed.
It isn't close to a coup attempt, it is a coup attempt.

Your moderating influence is normally pretty accurate, but it was never difficult to see a man who praised Putin, Kim, Xi, Duterte, Erdogan and criticised May, Merkel, Trudeau might be a fan of coups.
If Trump is preventing the national guard from getting involved, and at least claiming some of the police on side, that would really be the early makings of a coup attempt.
Everything would then turn to the military, who I'd presume woudn't be on his side.
How do the Republicans come back from this? How does Trump stay out of jail?
Well, hopefully he doesn’t.
As for the Republicans, inertia is a big thing. The Democrats eventually recovered from splitting three ways and plunging the country into a civil war over slavery.
Admittedly it took 76 years, but what are 76 years among friends?
Turn out to have known what they were talking about. Bit of a worry that half the military votes Trump.
Even more of a worry that half the country votes Trump.
Indeed. And America is polarising FURTHER not less, and it is clearly polarising on racial lines.
These disgraceful scenes are, to an extent, the payback for all the more extreme BLM marches pulling down statues of Lincoln etc.
The cops should have stopped those riots, just as they have to stop this utter sadness
Pelosi was saying only the other days that statues should be pulled out of the US Capitol, thus pouring fuel on the fire and fanning their deepest fears.
Both sides are a disgrace.
Even if that is so, things, particularly at this moment, are not equally disgraceful.
America is indeed a VERY divided and polarized place right now - that's NOT a secret.
BUT I know my own country well enough, to be confident in this - that the vast majority of Republicans and Trump supporters do NOT support the armed attack by a mob against the US Capitol. DO NOT SUPPORT IT.
My own father was a fan of Joe McCarthy in the early 1950s when he was fighting communism (my father was a US Marine Korean War combat vet). However, my Daddy Dearest turned against JMcC when it became clear that he was NOT motivated by good motives, but rather by a lust for power that had no limits.
Same thing is gonna happen with Trumpsky. That's my prediction for this day.
It is tragic. Difficult to see how America pulls back from this brink, but it must. Obvs.
Again one turns to Yeats' The Second Coming. Written in the immediate aftermath of Spanish Flu
Turning and turning in the widening gyre The falcon cannot hear the falconer; Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere The ceremony of innocence is drowned; The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity.
Got to be a reasonable chance now that the 46th President of the United States is not Biden, but Pence.
Betting?
We've covered this I believe. Even if Pence becomes president before Biden he won't be considered the 46th, I think.
I'd not seen that discussion. Why wouldn't he be considered 46th out of interest? Albeit he'd only be there for a fortnight, he'd potentially actually be President as opposed to acting President wouldn't he?
The usual Trump late get-out, to create ambiguity and denial room. He knows he's done enough to create real alarm and raise real questions about who's in charge.
I hope that the GOP dies and the party of Lincoln comes back.
Then tell BLM to stop tearing down statues of Lincoln. If you start a culture war, you get a culture war. This is the inevitable, awful, tragic outcome (I am not exonerating these morons in the Capitol, let alone the insane narcissist Trump)

Have we heard from Biden yet?
This is a coup attempt.
I think Biden is wise to be circumspect for now. The people involved will not listen to him, and anything he says is more likely to inflame. Better waiting for situation to stabilise and speaking to a scarred nation with a healing message.

Trump simply has to have committed a crime, surely?
And I repeat - Twitter needs to take down his account, now. This is seriously dangerous incitement.
Remember when everyone thought the rumours of Trump's Pentagon maneouvres were all froth ?
He's going to jail
Everything would then turn to the military, who I'd presume woudn't be on his side.
Have you even watched the film?
Don't hand people a match and then complain when they set a fire.
Insanity.
#NotAllGOP and some words of lament from Romney or whoever, and they will all stay in the party and be backed across the nation.
Would he need a majority of only confirmed cabinet members, or would it include acting members?

Incarcerating Trump might not be the most calming move.

OR will they ban his entry as a clear and present danger to public safety and security?
Cruz and co should hang their heads in utter shame. I hope the history books give them hell.

Unfortunately I don't know how you can amputate the arsehole.
Ergo, OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN.
The game keepers would have spread the word among your tenant farmers and summoned your militia for you.
So you would have had time for a relaxing sherry on the terrace, before starting the March On London.
This is a coup attempt.

Trump leaves before end of 1st Term: 18 on Betfair
EDIT I got £17 on it before it moved to 15
EDIT now 13.5
And pulling down the statue of Lincoln - the guy who ended slavery.
I mean, what the fuck?
The really scary thing is that millions of his supporters don't either. And they are armed, in many cases.
