I am still withholding judgment on the new regime but I agree with other posters who have said so far they have played this extremely well. Basically, their response to threats of a hard Brexit from the EU has been, "whatever, we have bigger fish to fry."

This may or may not be true but as a negotiating position it is hard to fault and improves our chances of getting what we want. Your article is one on many indications that EU members are starting to think this through with an eye to their own interests rather than protecting some absurd concept of EU supremacy.
I'm still making my mind up about Theresa May but, this week, I have been very impressed with her.
Some accelerated capital investment at long last. Just hope they actually do it !

Meanwhile Osborne's family company say they will benefit from Brexit :-)

Mr. T, nowhere near as well-travelled as most people, let along a travel reporter, but I had baby snakes (battered). They were rather nice.

Also had ox and sheep tongue. One was ok, shade rubbery, the other was displeasing as I could feel its tongue bumps on my own.

The weirdest thing was the duck embryo. It's a fertilised duck egg, just at the point of hatching - then they boil it. So you get the egginess but you are also crunching into a baby duck - brains, beaks, feathers, the works - but all soft and embryonic.

    They call it balut.

It was actually very very tasty - meat and egg - but the concept and spectacle is so disgusting I nearly gagged

Ugh! They sell those down the road from me at the beach, cant say I have ever been the slightest inclined to try it, but its considered a delicacy here by traditionalists (with which I am surrounded living as I do deep in the boonies). This country is full of wierd foods I have no intention of trying, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dinuguan for example, as well as many which are delightful.
A Filipina colleague has been threatening me with balut, it's apparently fairly easily obtainable in London.
Probably at the Manila Supermarket in Earl's Court, has a vast supply of filipino and other asian foods.

This week I'm puzzled as to why, if she is so enthused with a sovereign independent country, she campaigned to remain a subservient lapdog of the EU.
    It's a good question.

A notable difference for me is that Theresa May is clearly proud to be a Conservative and actually likes her own party.

    Good evening, everyone.

Good to see May has seen sense on Brexit.

Remaining in the single market is key and to be honest for a while there I had assumed she'd been brainwashed by Fox and that other clown, David Davis.

Her speech suggests not. Brexit is dead. Long live Lino - Leave in name only.

I'm giving Mrs May the benefit of the doubt atm.

Ultimately the negotiation will come down to if the EU27 decide Juncker is a prat acting in his own interests and take control of the negotiations themselves.

Agreed. And they will. Parents can only let the children be noisy for so long before order has to be restored.
That of course cant happen until the French and German elections are out of the way. And currently anything could happen. France is in a mess and Merkel is trying to destroy her own party.
Merkel is almost certainly toast. There is very little chance of her standing again. France, who knows? As I have said several times the real key is going to be finding anyone who can say yes. They may not exist once that matriarchy of Merkel comes to an end.
Is there any evidence Merkel is going to stand down?
On the contrary the general view was that her mea culpa was a signal that she intends to run again.

Merkel should have stood down after 10 years, like Tony Blair did.
  • There is a world of difference between having $ 2,80 as a virility symbol and accepting that the £ sterling is a less desirable currency to hold than the Bangladesh Taka , Iranian Rial and Guatemalan Quetzel to give just 3 examples .

Perhaps you'd like to take some Takas, Rials and Quetzels with you next time you go shopping and see if anyone would prefer them to Sterling ?

She has not committed herself and she is leaving it late. I think she has burnt too many bridges with her refugee policies and will decide she does not want to fight as hard as she would have to to win. She has had a very good run.

There were some polls earlier in the campaign making Clinton surprisingly competitive in Texas. The theory is that a combination of the Latino vote swinging more to the Democrats, and big cities' continued trend to the Left, could tip into the Clinton column if she won a big victory nationwide.

Not a game or a genre of games that I have played so I couldn't comment directly. However, bad language and computer games, in my experience, go together as do port and nuts. Best to keep the ladies out of earshot in both cases.
  • A couple of nice graphs in this BBC article:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-37549685

One shows the FTSE100 during 2016 - can you spot the small downwards blip which Remainers were gloating over at the end of June ? Or the far larger increase since then ?

The other shows the pound / dollar exchange rate from 1980 onwards - there was a 60% fall in sterling's value between 1981 and 1985 and a 35% fall during 2009.

Exchange rates go up and they go down.

If you want to understand why a lower exchange rate is needed for the UK economy then look at this table of the UK's trade balance:

    https://www.ons.gov.uk/economy/nationalaccounts/balanceofpayments/timeseries/ikbj/ukea

75 consecutive quarters of trade deficits.

The last time the UK had a trade surplus was in 1997q3 - I wonder if something happened in 1997 which caused the UK to shift to a country which continually lives beyond its means.

Yet if the Democrats had persuaded Joe Biden, Tim Kaine or even Elizabeth Warren to stand, they'd be looking at a landslide right now.

Ditto from the Republican side of course, if they'd started with five or six candidates, rather than let a huge field be dominated by one brash self-aggrandising loudmouth...

Yes I am kidding. Trumpers are super easy to wind up and I was fishing.
Last poll was Trump 6 points ahead. Not too far out.
I have lost all interest in the Presidential election. It is all over for Trump and we are going to have another Clinton in the White House but if I was a betting person, which I am not, I do not think she will see out her term, mainly due to her health

I have no intention of watching the remaining debates live . At my age sleep is much more fulfilling

It's a personal view, and somewhat overshadowed by Theresa May's, but I think the speech Boris Johnson gave on Sunday was the best I've heard yet.

Fur coat and no knickers comes to mind. Bojo is probably one of the most dangerous, and dishonest, people in public life today.

I don't think that's at all consistent with what Theresa May said on Sunday.

I'm talking about her comments today.
Whatever her comments today on UK companies 'operating within' the single market I think her message from Sunday was very clear: we will be leaving the single market and customs union.
"operating with" is a #WeaselWord if she meant "member of" she would have said it. For my money "operating with" is a weaselly way of saying "access to", in the same way as the US or India have "access to" the Single Market.

A couple of nice graphs in this BBC article:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-37549685

Financial data are used here as a drunk uses a lamppost, for support rather than illumination (I am generalising, not sniping at you). In that spirit, if you look at this graph http://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=GBP&to=USD&view=5Y with 5 or 10 years on the x axis, what we seem to be seeing is a continuation of a clear trend of £ dropping against $ which began in July 2014.

He had a wonderful line about the Tories wanting the government to work for everybody and Labour wanting everybody to work for the government...

    Events.

Or if the Republicans had got someone 'real world' to advocate the anti-establishment meme without letting Trump highjack it.

Ultimately I think you are right. But we will not get there until we have ratified a FTA which makes it worth our while - 7 years' work minimum. I think transitional arrangements are going to be key, and here I can see EEA as a possibility. Once A50 is served, two years on there is the edge of a cliff over which lies a WTO crash landing if no other agreement is in place.

@rcs1000, Hitman is surely a much older game (coal is currently generating a tad more than 10% of electricity by the way)
why not combine them and say you were lying pissed in a ditch in Co Armagh
Never drank when I was out there, Mr. Brooke. It was all a bit too fraught as I am sure you will remember. Went back as a civil servant in the 1990s and got completely and joyfully stoutious though.
Very hospitable people, the Irish. Recall being there on holiday in then 70’s and being told I was a guest, no way could I buy a drink for the group. There was only me and a dozen of them.

My host then sang “My little Armalite” as his contribution to the evening’s entertaintment. As an occasional Hammer I sang “I’m for ever blowing bubbles”!

    I couldn't disagree more.

He gave a very powerful speech about liberal democracy being in retreat, that its eventual triumph worldwide is very far from inevitable and that it is the role of a global Britain to fight and advocate for it.

I'd recommend that everyone watch it.
He’s a chancer and a liar, who is only interested in advancing himself.
Bless my soul, Mr. Cole. That is to be very candid to the point of rudeness. Not at all what one would expect from a gentleman, especially one richer in years.

It’s surprising what the evening’s half-bottle of Rioja can make one do.
I’m normally quite relaxed about politicians excesses, but Mr J really does annoy me.

Inappropriate language, Mr. L? As a long term gamer I can conceive that one may use any language one may choose and that may include such ripe expressions that one's mother may not wish to hear. However foul the words used I doubt that they are inappropriate.

It a reboot of Hitman. It is very good, but has been marketed terribly and they went for this episodic release strategy that has gone down like a bucket of cold sick.
Thank you, Mr. Urquhart. The marketing must indeed have been dreadful for the very existence of the new game passed by me and my son, and he a great fan of the series (I was never that fussed about it).
When all the episodes are out, I highly recommend suggesting your son picks it up (It will also be probably dirt cheap by then).

They also have this other great idea, but terrible strategy. They have these "elusive" target missions, where a new character will appear in the world for your hitman to try and kill. However, they only appear for a day or two and if you are killed yourself you can not replay that mission. So if you miss the real world window to try the mission or screw up it disappears from the servers never to be seen again.

    Really?

I'd guesstimate a 20-25% chance. Not far off betfair.

    If there's consensus of ~10%, then I'll take 9/1 if anyone's offering....

Well this is what was so stupid. They put all that effort into crafting these mission, but they were only available for 1-2 days. Well most normal people have to work, have family etc etc etc, so can't guarantee that on 9pm on a Tuesday they will definitely be free to try and carry out a hit on the pope during a visit to Italy*.

    * NSA / GCHQ triggered by this, its in THE GAME...THE...GAME...I have no interest in the pope in real life.
