"It's looking likely that Michael Gove will be invited to fall on his sword before Theresa uses it on him"

If May leaves the triumvirate that mobilised 17 million votes on the back benches, well.....

I'm advised there are differing issues at play :

    1. Gove's recent behaviour.
    2. Previous clashes with May
    3. Antipathy of significant number of Tory MP's
    4. Balance within the Cabinet.
    5. Ongoing reform within Justice Dept.
    6. New government rather than reshuffle.

Mr. Nabavi, great minds think alike.

Mr. Taffys, it could provide a wonderful reconciliation.

For my money, Leadsom's Lepidus. Not having Leadsom in the Cabinet would be a bold decision.

I read she's tipped for DECC SoS

I trust him to actually implement policy far more than most of them.

That's because he actually wants Brexit though. Gove is committed to policy, not people. Look at his time in education for the evidence. And look at how shamefully Cameron treated him. Replacing him with the execrable Morgan. Some friend.

I wonder if Gove and Osborne, and Boris perchance, being outside the Cabinet may allow them to serve full time on the Brexit team? Obviously the "Sec of State for Brexit" (one assumes Grayling though I wouldn't pick him personally) will be in the Cabinet as well as on that team, but surely team members can't all be members of the Cabinet running other depts at the same time?

or will there not actually be a "Brexit negotiating team" and we'll simply have a Dept, Cabinet Minister and loads of civil servants doing it all behind the scenes?

The problem with the EU thing is that no-one has a workable policy on what our relations should be with the EU. This is not new but has essentially been the British issue since the 1960's. As long as we were members, it was easy, it was whatever the EU was.

Now the binary Remain/Leave vote has eliminated that easy option we need to decide, when we never have been able to come up with a viable alternative, whether we stick to multilateral (ie EEA) or bilateral? Minimum change or radical change. If it's bilateral, what are our minimal and maximim demands? How are we going to transition - stay in the EU for the meantime, exit to the WTO outer orbit, temporary EEA? Will the EU parties agree? What are their demands on us? What will happen to our economy until the new arrangement is in place, which could take a decade?

Indeed. We need a European strategy.

See point 5 in the attached -

    Good afternoon all.

I liked this paper from Open Europe. I think there's the kernel of an idea there. We could indirectly contribute to the EU security package by increasing defence spending and undertaking joint ops in the Med/Baltics, as just one example.

No - he left his departments as they were, corrupt and incompetent. He forced through major changes in the areas they administered, which is altogether different. What is needed now is for someone to really seize hold of the said departments and shake them hard.

I will laugh myself silly if in a cabinet dominated by women Nicky Morgan gets the sack. Please, Theresa, please!!!

I keep seeing reference to the "downgraded" For Sec role - in what way is anyone suggesting it may be "downgraded" - because of Brexit/Europe being hived off to a new department?

Yup, Also expect BIS and Treasury to be slightly downgraded too, Brexit might well take over doing the new trade deals stuff
It's just a reflection of the power of the person. Osborne beefed up the Treasury. Even Hammond was on the rise. Osborne will be on a downslope, as will Javid (if he is kept in place)

Anna Soubry to MoD would make my day....she was a junior minister there.

Me too, though it would make my day if Anna Soubry became Secretary of State for Brexit, just imagine the look on Nigel Farage's face, it would be like someone stuck something up his bum
I would like to see Ms Soubry made Secretary of State for Europe, Champagne, and Metropolitan Attitudes (with a visiting brief on small coastal towns and real ale)
Soubry as Minister for Sandals and craft Ales.

I still want Dave. Give him Education.

Yep, and given the '99 Act he could still take the conventional hereditary Earldom while still being an MP :D
This "conventional hereditary Earldom"; I remember, when I was a child, being told that was the case but who was the last PM who accepted such a thing on leaving office? Macmillan didn't he only accepted elevation after the death of his son. Churchill was famously offered a dukedom by the king himself and turned it down.

So this conventional earldom, when was the convention last honoured? Does anyone know?

Do we know who the key players in Team May are (apart from the PM to be, of course)?

Mr. Eagles, generous of Mosley, given Watson seems to have been instrumental in running Labour's campaign of public self-humiliation.

It'll be because of Watson's campaigning with Hacked Off and the Leveson Inquiry.

Recent sightings have suggested to me that Anna Soubry is in fact Jennifer Saunders' latest comic creation of a completely over emotional, gobby, shrill Tory MP.

    'Absolutely flippedulous...'

@Pong lay of Hammond at 1.01 was by far the best bet of the day.

Not sure where he is now with his book but it was a great lay.

I can't imagine who'd want to be on the other side of that bet.
    Theresa May?
    She's a vicar's daughter!
If some PBers listened to religion or their parents, they would never have gambled a penny in their life
That's why I don't gamble. I invest in the politics markets.
I'll use that line, my mother would be appalled if she found just how much I invest, she thinks I have the odd bet at a tenner a time each month.
I think my new betting strategy will be to lay the favourite on the Tory leadership market for a tenner a month once the liquidity gets going.

Her insult to Farage was hardly the worst he's suffered. I think she's one of the more sensible Tories.

Keep a spreadsheet, so you can track both next Con Leader and next PM.

Laying Boris was very profitable this time around.

She would be wasted at the Scottish Office or indeed at Westminster, for the most part.
