I think that it is a mistake by the campaigns. I can understand it but it appears to link the grievous event with the campaigns. That might encourage other nutters. It would be better for both campaigns to express sorrow, revulsion and condemnation then carry on (but lower the temperature).

It's tricky for them, but suspending for today is perhaps the right call on balance. I hope they'll be able to start again tommorow but it sounds grim, and the referendum campaigns might be crystallised from now till the 23rd if the worst should happen.

FPY Midwinter made the following interesting point
"Ed Miliband was campaigning in northern marginals on election day last year? Seems more likely Dave thinks hes going to win if he's in Gibraltar. Or he doesn't care any more."
Just before the last GE Dave was in St Ives. It was queried why on earth he was there given it was looking lost. Dave of course went onto win a stunning victory
The people campaigning on both sides are her colleagues and friends. Would you want to carry on working if one of your colleagues was shot while on duty
And for the poster asking earlier 'if he had a beard?' (I wonder what that was code for?) - this pic of an arrest nearby of a white, beardless man, may be the alleged assailant:

Mr. Moses, also worth noting a referendum is fundamentally different to a General Election (which is really 650 mini-contests). There, racking up turnout in safe seats is stupid. In a referendum, all votes count the same.

Just saying
It's a referendum so every vote counts the same - if you think campaigning strongly above all else boosts turnout then you're probably best off focussing on your strongest areas.
Had some other (personal) bad news whilst this was breaking so have been out of the loop for an hour or so. Appalling brutal attack by a knuckle-dragging "man" on a defenceless woman.
I do have thoughts on how this impacts on the referendum, but its inappropriate to post them at the moment.

That's a fair point.
I think it may also be related to the seriousness of her injuries. If (heaven forbid) she doesn't make it, it would be unthinkable not to have a brief pause in the campaign.

Sorry to hear that - on the Jo Cox attempted murder, lets see what news emerges, but agree, a 'rush to judgement' will not serve any of us well.
@David_Cameron: It's right that all campaigning has been stopped after the terrible attack on Jo Cox. I won't go ahead with tonight's rally in Gibraltar.
Quite right and the correct thing to do - I wonder who paid for his flight though...
It is important to differentiate between political opponents and regarding people as human beings just like us.
I remember when the accusations of child abuse were made against Heath. This was a man who I had a real loathing for as a politician but who I had been too young really to have any real recollection of when he was PM.
I remember an interview being shown where he was asked about his private life and why he had never married. It was being used as some sort of insinuation about his sexuality and his responses - which were clearly very uncomfortable - were being viewed in this light.
What I took away from the short piece was the fact that Heath was an incredibly private man who found talking about his private life and relationships desperately difficult and uncomfortable and all I really wanted to do at that point was give him a hug (though of course he would probably have hated that). It didn't change the way I viewed him as a politician but it transformed how I viewed him as a human being.

Heh that is a good point. Surely the remain campaign ?

Oh come on!! If that's not Cameron capitalising on the shooting, what on earth is it?

The same could be said for both sides by cancelling their campaigns. If Cameron had said "this is why we should vote remain" I'd agree with you.
Thanks for the hugs all, but genuinely I don't deserve (or want) to be the focus here. My news was hard to hear and raises "interesting" questions what to do next, but is not on the scale of this.

Why on earth would you wonder about it - it's not remotely relevant to anything.

Cancelling a rallt in the most remaun inclined constituency is hardly capitalising on it.
"Police are also investigating reports the suspect shouted “Britain First”, a possible reference to the far-right political party, as he launched the attack.
Graeme Howard, 38, who lives in nearby Bond Street, told the Guardian he heard the man shout “Britain First” before the shooting and during the arrest.
Police were understood to be talking to at least one witness who claimed to have heard the attacker shout words about the right-wing group, and the motivation for the incident will form part of their inquiry
“I heard the shot and I ran outside and saw some ladies from the cafe running out with towels,” he said. “There was loads of screaming and shouting and the police officers showed up.
“He was shouting Britain First when he was doing it and being arrested. He was pinned down by two police officers and she was taken away in an ambulance.”

Yes. Politicians of all hues just want what's best for Britain. Now, they may have different views of exactly what Jerusalem looks like, and they wildly diverge on the best path to get there, but ultimately most people get into politics for the best of reasons.
No one on this board is a traitor. Or evil. (With one exception, obviously.)

I had forgotten Britain First was the latest incarnation of NF, EDL, BNP etc so if he was saying it he was refering to a neo nazi splinter group?

Now, as well as Maria Eagle rushing to tweet what she heard from goodness knows where about the shout of "Britain First", we have the Daily Mail quoting Aamir Tahir, of the Dry Clean Centre, saying that the gunman was heard shouting "Britain first" and that "apparently the guy who did it shouted 'Britain first.'"
As yet, there's no named person who actually says they heard this supposed shout.
There was no named person saying he saw Jean-Charles de Menezes wearing a heavy jacket with wires sticking out either, but that notion was widely reported in the media.
Now, my friends, is a very important time to speculate, before the narrative gels.

Telegraph reporting a witness in their liveblog:
A man who runs a nearby cafe said he believed the gunman shot MP Jo Cox three times - including once in "the head area" - before stabbing her multiple times with a "foot-long knife".
Clarke Rothwell said that, as the man stabbed Mrs Cox, he shouted: "Britain First, Britain First, Britain First."
He said: "Three times she was shot, the initial time which then she dropped to the floor and two more times.
"The third time he got close proximity he shot her round the head area."
He added: "In the meantime he was stabbing her as well, he was stabbing her with his knife."
Mr Rothwell said there was blood everywhere at the scene.
Asked if he thought Ms Cox had intervened in a dispute he said he understood the altercation was "always between the guy carrying the gun and the lady that got shot".
Mr Rothwell added: "He was stabbing her with a footlong knife multiple times while shouting Britain First, Britain First, Britain First."

Yes indeed, and I do say it about both sides. I already said it about Boris Johnson and Vote Leave.
Jayda Fransen, deputy leader of Britain First, said the party was “looking into the reports right now”.
“We were extremely shocked to see these reports and we are keen to confirm them, because of course at the moment it is hearsay,” she said. “This has just been bought to our attention. This is absolutely not the kind of behaviour we would condone.”

They could have just condemned the shooting, expressed good wishes for Jo Cox and a hope for her speedy recovery, and not tried to portray their campaigns as willing to be self-sacrificial for the defence of decency and people not getting shot in the street, which is what both sides have done.

An absolutely tragic event. Words at this point fail me. I just hope despite that terrible description she makes it but the injuries must be appalling.
Was just reading through the last thread before I realised. Thoughts and prayers with Jo Cox and family, how awful.
IIRC This is the second such attempted murder of an MP in recent times, Stephen Timms was also targeted a few years ago. Surely we don't have to start placing police at MP surgeries?

In the meantime, I hope to god this fundamentally decent woman recovers.

Mr. L, your daughter's clearly wise. Must be her mother's influence
As others have said, Britain First is a small far right group. I hope Jo Cox can come through this (as Stephen Timms did).
Won £126 apparently.
