If you can't see the left-wing bias in the BBC you are brain dead.
Evidence item 1 M'Lud' (second time today from me) footage from 2016 substituted by BBC News Editors to protect Johnson from humiliation from misplacing the wreath at the Cenotaph in 2019.
P.S. My wife often claims I am brain dead, so you may have a point.
Evidence accepted.
I avoid the BBC nowadays so I wouldn't really know - but I'm fairly sure the champers bottles at BBC HQ on election night 97 are true.
Is this the same PM who conducted an affair while he was chief whip?
You've lost the argument in favour of Johnson if you are claiming a politician has no credibility and thus should be silenced because he was unfaithful to his wife.
Not at all
Boris is constantly attacked for his morals, and John Major is open to the same criticism
There are degrees here.
Not sure that helps. Major famously didn't have one and Boris has an Upper Second from Oxford.
So one of them doesn't have a degree and the other didn't even attend uni?
Interestingly, only one former chief whip has ever become PM or even party leader - Edward Heath, Chief Whip under Eden and Macmillan and PM from 1970-74.
Pym, Whitelaw and John Silkin were all spoken of as possible future leaders but the closest any of them came was Whitelaw's second place to Thatcher in 1975.
Yes - I misread the article but he was a government whip in that period

Refering toTed as "chief whip" brings all sorts of awful pictures into my mind's eye.
Debate over relative morality of Boris Johnson versus John Major reminds me of a somewhat similar argument raised during the 1884 presidential election between Grover Cleveland and James G. Blaine.
Grover Cleveland (Democrat) was noted for his integrity as a public official, in particular waging war while governor of New York against Tammany Hall corruption in city AND state government. On the other hand, he'd publicly admitted to fathering a child out of wedlock (he was a bachelor, and may have taken the rap for a buddy). Thus the GOP taut - "Maw, Maw, where's my Paw?"
James G. Blaine (Republican) was by contrast a happily-married man noted for devotion to his family. On the other hand, he was also notorious for his corrupt dealings, for political and personal gain. In one memorable instance (the Mulligan Letter affair) he famously ended one piece of illicit correspondence with the request, "Kindly burn this letter". Thus the Democratic taunt - "James G. Blaine, James G. Blaine, continental liar from the State of Maine!"
So the question was, which was preferable - a leader whose public conduct was praiseworthy while his private conduct was not, or visa vera?
The verdict - a close one - was in favor of the former.
Would seen to me that John Major falls (broadly) into this same category?
On the other hand, Boris Johnson's conduct is questionable both publicly AND privately?
Although I am fairly sure that had Maria Halpin's story of rape, forcible abduction of their child, and abuse of power to ensure her wrongful sectioning been told about a candidate today, it would to say the least be somewhat less likely to be accepted as 'a bachelor doing what a bachelor does.'

Having been accused of spreading falsehoods on the last thread, I'd like to find out how bad my falsehoods are.
Does anybody know how many gas power plants get turned off because it's windy?
How much gas has not been burnt because of the wind?
I only ever of hear wind's "achievements" as a percentage of total energy produced. Currently, with such pathetic energy storage capacity, this is an irrelevant figure if we're not able to rely on wind enough to switch off the gas power plants.
The only stat that matters, while we don't have the storage, is how much less gas do we burn on a very windy day.
As a relevant aside, I presume our biomass plants can't even theoretically be switched on and off like gas?

He did his job and the vote passed. Not his fault Boris pushed for the vote in the first place then u turned.
He should have told Boris about the discontent
If he did not know, he should have and needs to go
What is more likely - that the chief whip had no idea of the discontent or did but did not tell Boris? Or that he told Boris who pushed ahead anyway?
Given the job he has, the former seems improbable.
This is scapegoating.
Boris Johnson must have someone to blame other than himself. He's tried to blame Paterson, and now he's seeing if the chief whip would be a suitable fall guy. The blame for his failings must be deflected at all costs.
I suppose this is often the way, that a leader is slowly stripped of their supporters as they are discarded to shield the leader from harm.

The issue here is surely JRM scheduling a vote on an outrageous proposal for the very next day on a 3 line whip, in a blatant attempt to stymie a rebellion. He has form for this. How can the Chief Whip take soundings under those circumstances?

I have just watched the advert and my conclusion is many will respond
He has resigned as an MP Angela
Has Claudia Webb, and how about the £249 you falsely claimed for Air pods Angela
Indeed. £107m contracts handed without tender to donors is exactly the same as £249 for Air Pods.
Paterson has paid with his job, Rayner tries to take the moral high while having been found out herself
Can you not see the hypocrisy
I don't like Rayner, but no, I can't.
Rayner's actions were not the frugal, careful with the taxpayers behaviour that I'd prefer to see, but it doesn't compare to selling yourself as an MP to the highest bidder.
I see that Big_G's outrage at the behaviour of Paterson didn't last long, and he's now moved on to consoling himself with imagining that Labour are just as bad. That sort of false equivalence is one of the things that allows corruption to flourish.
Yeah - they're all Pretty Straight Guys at Labour.
If you refuse to distinguish between bad and worse then you let the worse off the hook, and you can make a distinction without excusing the bad.
Just how worst was Blair when he accepted a 1M quid donation from Bernie?
IIRC that was to the party, not personally. But I agree a very bad look.
and he gave the money back.
Admittedly only after he had given Ecclestone the deal he wanted on tobacco advertising.
More swinging and missing than in a golf lesson for beginners at the moment.
I don’t recall many defending his behaviour at the time. It was pretty disgusting, and it was likely only public opinion that made him return the cash. How any of that justifies current day corruption is frankly beyond me.
Perhaps is just a way for the Big G tendency to continue voting for Boris while expressing contempt for him.
It doesn't justify the Paterson case.
I'm just saying that Blair's corruption was much, much worse than Paterson's
Because you expected better of the Vicar of St Albions?
No because lobbying is legal
Paying PM 1M GBP to change policy is not.
As anyone in F1 knew, Bernie was a very shrewd negotiator.
He managed to get his policy enacted by Tony, and didn’t have to pay a penny for it.
It was the most corrupt thing I've ever seen in politics and all it took from Tony was a smirk at the cameras.
IIRC, Bernie leaned Conservative. He felt the deal he did with the government was above board, and was a reasonable compromise to a difficult situation for the sport. A longer delay in enacting the tobacco sponsorship ban, in order to move onto other sponsorship was vital in a sport that has its heart in the UK. The ensuing scandal, by the papers and the Conservative opposition, turned him well and truly against both parties.
IMV that was a good argument. The issue was that Bernie had paid the Labour Party a million earlier in the year, and no-one realised, or cared, that it could be seen as a conflict of interest.
But apparently he has never forgiven the Tories ...
I don't care about the Bernie angle - I care about how little people cared about the corrupt practises of Tone.
That was two decades ago. Might as well complain about Lloyd George.
I haven't watched it in years until it appeared all over today's news feeds. Well worth watching. States it like it is. Better than Muhammed Ali's double punch in Round 8.

It's plain as night and day that we burn less gas when the wind blows.
You can see the variation in biomass too. Like coal it's slower to ramp up and ramp down than gas, but it is done.
It does look like there are about three months in the year when we actually burn less gas because of the wind.
That's better than I expected.
The wind we have at present is mostly replacing coal that we previously used, not gas. As we add more wind we will be able to reduce the amount of gas burnt.

Actually parts - though not all - of that was reported at the time. And vigorously disputed.
Just having a story out there neither proves its factual accuracy OR ensures its political efficacy. Plenty of examples from that throughout human history, including in the early 21st century.
Around 7 million people who are eligible for the booster have not had it yet.
A combination of poor organisation and people not coming forward.
While it looks like the organisation has now improved, the government needs a concerted campaign to get people jabbed.
Also, let's not forget the millions who haven't even had their first dose. Perhaps some micro-targetting is required to persuade them. Either that or vaccine passports to exclude them from a social existence and the workplace. Or blowpipes.
I haven't watched it in years until it appeared all over today's news feeds. Well worth watching. States it like it is. Better than Muhammed Ali's double punch in Round 8.

From what I can work out from here the contribution from gas seems to be more affected by our overall energy usage than contribution from wind.
I'd love to see the stats on two identical days (of the week, same light, same temperature, same TV sort of stuff (ie no England football or similar), but a still day and a windy day.
In about 2 weeks time I'll have had two AZ shots and a Pfizer booster. 90% of Britons over 12 will have had at least one shot, with the double dosers heading for 80%. Millions more will have had boosters
We have an antiviral approved, and another amazing antiviral on the way. Almost every child in the country has either had the bug or dodged it completely. The reservoirs of vectors have run dry
Barring some incredible and hideous new variant, Britain has beaten this fucking bug, Deus Vult and calloo callay
However Boris could stay PM with DUP and NI Unionist support. Hence Boris and Frost are now considering invoking Article 16 to appease Sir Jeffrey Donaldson as the DUP could again be Kingmakers as they were in 2017
Boris still narrowly preferred PM on 28% to 26% for Starmer
Are the "Masters" getting rattled? Do they sense the electorally subjugated and subservient public starting to turn? A little prosaic perhaps - disenchantment with the Government is as inevitable as night following day and me losing money on the Breeders Cup.
Converting that disenchantment into an active vote for the Opposition is another journey and it can be a long one.
A wise man once said the one thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about so I am once again indebted to @Anabobazina whose confusion over and struggle with the nuances of truth and perception continues to illuminate my late autumn evenings.
The case numbers continue to tread in entirely the right direction but how is this being seen among the good old British public? Among my peer group of fellow crusties and wrinklies out and about for a long pub lunch (see, you're not the only one who spends his leisure time in a drinking establishment), the concern is much less the case numbers about which not a word spoken nor the death toll not the hospitalisations but frustration over the booster roll out.
It's clear, to quote Mr Bulsara, "I want it all and I want it now" is the mantra of those who would prefer not to wait for 182 days to pass but would rather get their booster now so they can "live life and celebrate life" (thank you, @Philip_Thompson). The news those of us due for our booster at the end of the month can crash the NHS website on Monday trying to book an appointment brought some cheer but there is concern over how long people have had to wait and the two of our number who have had their boosters were sitting pretty.
I'll be honest - apart from wearing a mask on the London Underground, in all other significant aspects, my life is how it was before the virus. Some remain more cautious which is their right while others have completely abandoned mask wearing.
I am cautiously optimistic as winter approaches - as long as the booster programme gets to those who need it, we'll be fine I suspect subject to any "black swan" events such as Norwich City winning a match or me backing three or four winners at the Breeders Cup.
I have just watched the advert and my conclusion is many will respond

Had Labour been in power, do you think they would have put market competition before getting supplies ASAP?
You may be right but that is not the point Rochdale is making.
It was the awarding of contracts to friends and family with no previous experience in the supply of medical PPE that some find startling. One could even forgive the odd million or ten wasted on faulty kit, were it not for the evidence that a small but expensive proportion of contracts were nothing less than family or friend- enriching grifts.

Demanding Rayner's resignation because Paterson resigned may be a fair point. But you should also be demanding Matt Hancock and several other MPs from the Labour and Conservative Parties fall on their swords too for over indulging in Apple products at the taxpayers expense.
It suits me if Rayner is defenestrated for her ear buds. It would make it much easier to throw Johnson to the dogs over Carrie's wallpaper...or doesn't that count?
I did find it striking that she still attends Labour photo shoots alongside Labour MPs and waves Labour branded placards.
But I guess she’s independent so you can disclaim responsibility

I would expect at least 1 or 2 Labour leads by midterm but of course Ed Miliband had lots of midterm poll leads for all the good it did him (albeit Miliband was helped by also having Scottish Labour votes until late 2014 which have since gone SNP)

I actually think a lot depends on covid and if we are really seeing the numbers fall greatly, and we enjoy a good Christmas the feel good factor may come into play
I assume next week will be all about COP26 and no doubt Boris will feature very much in the media as he closes the conference
The question for labour is just when they may achieve a poll lead and will it be sustained

You’d think politicians who make a feature of their Protestant Christian faith would find supporting a serial liar and adulterer who was currently a Roman Catholic‘difficult’!
As long as he invokes Article 16 they will support him, Starmer is an atheist not a Protestant either, even if he respects faith (and Boris was C of E for a number of years).
Religious people? Hypocrites? Say it aint so!
No, simply this will be the first general election we have ever had in which neither of the main party leaders was Anglican or even Protestant.
Boris is Roman Catholic, Starmer is an atheist. Though I believe Davey is C of E, having been on record as stating he is Christian and occasionally attending his local Anglican church

Neither Bozza nor Starmo believe in god - both men are avowed atheists in real life. Possibly the first time both the PM and the Loto have been godless.
Boris is certainly not an avowed atheist. He famously made this excellent analogy:
"I suppose my own faith, you know, it's like a bit like trying to get Virgin Radio when you're driving through the Chilterns. It sort of comes and goes. I mean sometimes the signal is strong, and then sometimes I'm afraid it just vanishes. And then it comes back again."
I have just watched the advert and my conclusion is many will respond
He has resigned as an MP Angela
Has Claudia Webb, and how about the £249 you falsely claimed for Air pods Angela
Claudia Webb is currently an Independent and the Labour Party or any other party for that matter has no direct influence on whether she chooses to resign or stay.
I apologise for my fake news.
I was under the impression she was suspended- much like her old mucker Comrade Corbyn. She won't be the candidate in Leicester East come the big day.
One point about the Bercow support for Paterson that hadn't occurred to me until I saw that HIGNFY episode @Heathener linked to above:
Bercow was himself condemned by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards - over bullying allegations he had strongly denied and clearly felt very bitter about.
So both fellow feeling and spite against the system may have been at work there.
Had Starmer not had the Corbyn falling-out, he would still be on about 39-40%. That was and isn't the wisest strategy, as he came in with cross-factional support. I think the Tories will lose more to REFUK though, and lose votes to a right-wing reform agenda themselves, so he may be partially let off the results of that.

Actually parts - though not all - of that was reported at the time. And vigorously disputed.
Just having a story out there neither proves its factual accuracy OR ensures its political efficacy. Plenty of examples from that throughout human history, including in the early 21st century.
What I am saying is that I don't think it would have been so swiftly dismissed now as it was then - largely because his supporters were anxious to excuse his behaviour.
Clinton barely survived the Lewinsky scandal which was an order of magnitude less serious and before #MeToo.
(He was also probably lucky that Blaine got involved in another scandal part way through that first campaign as well.)
I have to say whatever his successes as a politician I have always found Cleveland to be thoroughly repulsive and creepy character. But then, that's not unusual among nineteenth century politicians. Lord Melbourne and Herbert Asquith spring to mind.

Neither Bozza nor Starmo believe in god - both men are avowed atheists in real life. Possibly the first time both the PM and the Loto have been godless.
Wrong, Boris is Roman Catholic, he was married at Westminster Cathedral and as Leon has stated has faith.
At most he is a Roman Catholic occasional agnostic, he is certainly not atheist like Starmer is
You do know a person faith is between them and their God, not some pigeon hole you put them in

It's plain as night and day that we burn less gas when the wind blows.
You can see the variation in biomass too. Like coal it's slower to ramp up and ramp down than gas, but it is done.
It does look like there are about three months in the year when we actually burn less gas because of the wind.
That's better than I expected.
The wind we have at present is mostly replacing coal that we previously used, not gas. As we add more wind we will be able to reduce the amount of gas burnt.
From what I can work out from here the contribution from gas seems to be more affected by our overall energy usage than contribution from wind.
I'd love to see the stats on two identical days (of the week, same light, same temperature, same TV sort of stuff (ie no England football or similar), but a still day and a windy day.
How much more gas gets burnt on the still day?
Well yes, the contribution from gas is more affected by demand because demand varies by a greater absolute magnitude than wind.
Roughly speaking demand varies between 20-45 GW (though doubtless with less frequent excursions below and above those limits).
Broadly speaking wind generation varies from 1-12 GW (I'm trying to estimate 90% confidence intervals).
So the variation in demand is about twice the variation in wind supply.
However Boris could stay PM with DUP and NI Unionist support. Hence Boris and Frost are now considering Article 16 to appease Sir Jeffrey Donaldson as the DUP could again be Kingmakers as they were in 2017
Boris still narrowly preferred PM on 28% to 26% for Starmer

Personally I would find it very hard to vote for an atheist for PM but that is my personal view too

Just cos you get married in a church does not make you religious. I know many people who have done so just for the celebration of the event and who are atheist. Same re christenings.
Some may do, that is their business however as Leon has confirmed in the link he provided Boris is on record as saying he has faith and is therefore not a confirmed atheist.
Faith that comes and goes like an AM radio signal? I’m not sure you grasp the meaning of the word ‘faith’.
So not a confirmed atheist then.
A confirmed atheist must believe there is no God at all times. As I said at most Boris is a Roman Catholic occasional agnostic, he is not an atheist like Starmer is

I avoid the BBC nowadays so I wouldn't really know - but I'm fairly sure the champers bottles at BBC HQ on election night 97 are true.
Given the job he has, the former seems improbable.
This is scapegoating.
That's better than I expected.
I suppose this is often the way, that a leader is slowly stripped of their supporters as they are discarded to shield the leader from harm.
He has form for this. How can the Chief Whip take soundings under those circumstances?
I mean, nothing compared to the absolute evisceration of Boris Johnson by Ian Hislop on last night's HIGNFY. Wow.

Quite a few people saying you can book today so it’s worth a try! 💉

We've got this wretched virus on the run, at last
Just having a story out there neither proves its factual accuracy OR ensures its political efficacy. Plenty of examples from that throughout human history, including in the early 21st century.
'Nevertheless, after another week of torrid headlines, the question is why Labour still haven't managed to pull ahead

Just booked for 4th December.

I was done this afternoon.
Just waiting now to see if there any side effects...
But I guess she’s independent so you can disclaim responsibility
19-5 now.
The clamour to see the back of the Major Government had to be seen to be believed. The champagne corks were popping everywhere.
BUT there is now a lot of good news, so maybe we won't require them, and the libertarians can rest
I assume next week will be all about COP26 and no doubt Boris will feature very much in the media as he closes the conference
The question for labour is just when they may achieve a poll lead and will it be sustained
I am very glad I do not bet as I have no idea how GE 24 will work out but anymore misjudgement like this week's from Boris he may not even be fighting it
He has angered a large part of his party and the interesting thing to watch over the next few months is if he can repair the self inflicted damage
Boris is Roman Catholic, Starmer is an atheist. Though I believe Davey is C of E, having been on record as stating he is Christian and occasionally attending his local Anglican church

"I suppose my own faith, you know, it's like a bit like trying to get Virgin Radio when you're driving through the Chilterns. It sort of comes and goes. I mean sometimes the signal is strong, and then sometimes I'm afraid it just vanishes. And then it comes back again."

I was under the impression she was suspended- much like her old mucker Comrade Corbyn. She won't be the candidate in Leicester East come the big day.
Bercow was himself condemned by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards - over bullying allegations he had strongly denied and clearly felt very bitter about.
So both fellow feeling and spite against the system may have been at work there.
At most he is a Roman Catholic occasional agnostic, he is certainly not atheist like Starmer is

Sacked after first win.
The more renewables we have, the more we have to pay plants to sit there, with the operators sat around watching Netflix.
Except in most of europe, which is looking like a lockdown emergency is looming.
Too many refusing to be vaxxed plus timing the opening too late in summer it looks like.
To be fair, his faith is his own business, nonetheless he needs to brush up on quite a few of the Ten Commandments.
To the true believer, Boris Johnson and You Know Who are Millennium III King Davids - imperfect vessels yet inspired by the Lord.
Wow.
I always remember the late Dave Allen concluded his shows with

I could just about vote for an agnostic but not a confirmed atheist
As I mentioned earlier Mad Mick, Big Sam and Stevie B. are all available. OGS could be an outside bet.
There is not one quote anywhere where Boris says he does not believe in God
