Umph. There’s something we’re not being told, isn’t there?
    Yeah.

I know it used to be impolite (and illegal) to talk about the death of a monarch but there's plenty of evidence out there when one half of a long standing couple dies the other one goes not so long afterwards.

There was a story in The Sunday Times saying for future events the Queen will be accompanied by one of her children or the Duke of Cambridge so if she has to cancel at the last moment there will be a senior royal on hand to ensure the event happens and the attendees aren't left disappointed.

That's a great big red flag for me.
She will still be joining by videolink.

She is also 95, already 14 years older than the average UK life expectancy.

Hopefully she will go on as long as possible but realistically Charles will become King and William Prince of Wales within 5-10 years

I am now trying to remember when I was last in a jacuzzi.

I think it was on a school trip to Heidelberg in 1996.

Its use as a nickname for Queen Elizabeth II originated in Private Eye in reaction to a perceived attempt by the royals to appear less distant and upper class.

    Yes

It was always bound to start this way - precautionary hospitalisations, ordered to rest by doctors, etc. Plus I dunno what the stats are but there's a strong folk belief the demise of one of a long marriage happens the demise of the other.
That is common but I've never been able to reconcile that fact with the fact women live longer than men and women tend (on average) to marry men older than them.

I'm not sure if the latter fact is still true though but it has been historically.

Oops, it was in the Sunday Telegraph, but here's the story that was the great big red flag for me,.

The Queen will be accompanied by one of her children or grandchildren when she appears in public in the future, to avoid letting the public down at the last minute in the event of future health scares.

The Queen, who cancelled a trip to Northern Ireland this week under doctors’ orders, will be joined by another member of the Royal Family who can step into the breach should she need company or assistance.

It’s almost as if the huge increases in positive tests in the SW was entirely due to retests after the problems came out. Who’d have thought it? Well me obviously, but clearly not the local news who seemed to think we had suddenly increased cases to more than twice the national average, despite being under it in the lead up to the erroneous tests.

Yes quite. Weather x 50 years? = climate.

In any case it's damned cold here in the Midlands. As it has been pretty much all summer, starting with a poor June:

According to the weather anomaly maps, this summer has actually been slightly warmer than average in the Midlands, and September has been much warmer.

The spaghetti-tree hoax was a three-minute hoax report broadcast on April Fools' Day 1957 by the BBC current-affairs programme Panorama, purportedly showing a family in southern Switzerland harvesting spaghetti from the family "spaghetti tree". At the time spaghetti was relatively unknown in the UK, so many British people were unaware that it is made from wheat flour and water; a number of viewers afterwards contacted the BBC for advice on growing their own spaghetti trees. Decades later, CNN called this broadcast "the biggest hoax that any reputable news establishment ever pulled" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spaghetti-tree_hoax
I tried growing vegetable spaghetti on the allotment once.

    They look quite nice!

That you tried growing it once suggests it wasn't a roaring success?

The fact we've been doing so for donkeys' years doesn't make it justifiable, and anyway the scale of it has increased recently. Yes, an easy win for Labour, but stupidity from the Tories, who should have seen how it would play out. Some did but they weren't listened to.

That's up to her really, isn't it? I'm sure it's within her power to ask people to call her Betty or whatever.
Either way, I don't recommend anyone addresses anyone else by their title, unless it's heavily in your own interests like if you're the defendant addressing the judge. People are the same, deep down. Brenda is no better a person than HYUFD or ismaelZ or Northern_Al.

It's HM the Queen. HRH is for a lesser royal (I believe up to second generation male line descent from a reigning sovereign, although I'm not sure of that).

    I wouldn't. I'd called her Liz.
Here's a question. Is there anyone left alive who calls her by her first name?

Her children won't. Her godchildren presumably don't. Her friends of the same generation are now all dead. Everyone else calls her by a title.

Are you seriously suggesting she would muddle up the Suez Canal and the Strait of Hormuz?

That seems to me to be bordering on treason...

Re the discussion earlier about electric car charging.

Electric cars have near 100kWhr capacity. So if we get to 10 or more million cars that is an amazing amount of storage capacitу, say 1000 GWhr connected to the grid.. that does away with the need for gas power plants for peak power usage. You can already get a very cheap tariff with octopus if you let them use your Tesla for distributed storage, so you plug it in and they charge it, or take power from the car to the grid at other times.

Of course you do need the overall supply to be sufficient for the amount of travel, plus to cope with millions of new heat pumps in the winter.

Imagine what we could do if we all had (separately from cars) 100kWh batteries in our homes. Think what a difference that would make to storage capacity.

And it's the way we're headed, isn't it?

It really isn't synthetic anger. I don't really do anger, but it's made me mildly livid. Civilised, prosperous countries such as ours shouldn't be dumping raw sewage into the sea or rivers. The fact we've been doing so for donkeys' years doesn't make it justifiable, and anyway the scale of it has increased recently. Yes, an easy win for Labour, but stupidity from the Tories, who should have seen how it would play out. Some did but they weren't listened to.

If that’s where we’re heading then at some point we need to discuss moving the home and office from AC to DC for efficiency reasons.

Dunno if Queens consort get called her Maj, or if therpeople are prepared for Queen Camilla. Expecting to find out soonish.

They do, yes. Exhibit A - HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

Famously, when one of them rang the other the switchboard operator had to say: 'Your Majesty? Her majesty, your majesty.'

And I am pretty confident any freeholder of English land can properly call her Squire.

As a good Lancastrian I address her as Duke when I bump into her.

Would this not shorten the longevity of the car battery through additional charges compared to what you’d use driving?

It’s a potentially very large hidden cost.

Why is you calling her "Brenda"?
Its use as a nickname for Queen Elizabeth II originated in Private Eye in reaction to a perceived attempt by the royals to appear less distant and upper class.
There's nothing worse than a member of the upper/upper middle classes pretending to be working class.

Makes them look like complete tossers.
Wait til you get to Chaz3.0 and then Will.V.Am
    I can't wait for the Queen's speech:

"My mandem’s priority is to deliver bare policies to make the UK peng. To achieve this, my mandem will level up your ends, innit."
And that still better English than the platitudes Blair made her spout.
Wow!! I really have been out of the UK for too long. I had to google mandem, bare, peng AND ends.

To be fair, the Queen might be in the best of health and just wanted an excuse to not go to Glasgow.

Last time I went to Glasgow the food was so bad I'd rather eat the shavings from a ped egg.

Can't be any worse than Sheffield or Manchester
