I think he's right.Danny565 said:Tim Montgomerie: If voters have a choice between an individualist right and a big-government left, the latter will prove more popular
http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/opinion/columnists/article4405688.ece
The general reaction to events is "the government should do something" or " the government should ban it".
Which is why EdM's 'policy' announcements tend to be popular no matter how ill-thought out they are and how ineffective they would be in practice.
The Conservatives don't help themselves by failing to put forward a small government philosophy. They had the makings of one with the 'Big Society' but it was never thought through properly and then it was abandoned.
Conservatives attempts to match EdM with policy announcements are therefore self-defeating - if someone wants a meddling big-government then its natural to support Labour, who believe in the philosophy, rather than the Conservatives, who don't or at least shouldn't.

UKPR point out that YouGov have changed their methodology now that the election is under way. I'm not sure that this makes their previous polls comparable.
And on the subject of non doms (again) how crass is Mike Smithson to parade the crass drivel from Rentoul?
The person seen on tape clearly defending the concept of non dom status is Ed Balls.
But hey why not play along with labour propaganda - Mr Smithson is so outside the Westminster bubble that he will go to ludicrous extremes to try to get the worst cabinet minister in the entire coalition government re-elected.0 -

This is where the increase in inequality and the reduction in socioeconomic mobility is damaging the Conservatives.
What we have now is a much larger gap between the average person and the ultra rich and the ultra rich becoming an increasingly closed off section of society.
Its very damaging to a party associated as being 'on the side of the rich' when the 'rich' become totally disconnected from everyone else.
I've pointed this out before but Harry Enfield's 'Loadsamoney' character from the last years of Thatcher was not a banker or a yuppie but a plasterer.

Yes, it's a ruddy good idea. When I was at school it was piecemeal until sixth form - you had about 2 form lessons in Year 10 with a computer program and a teacher. A face to face adviser would've been a vast improvement, as you would've been able to admit hopes, fears and ambitions in private rather than joking around saying you'd join the mafia or become a spy, or laughing when your mate got 'sandwich maker' (nothing wrong with that, just seemed strange to be qualified for). Could help improve kids results if they see their work as leading to something tangible, and shouldn't prove too costly as you could have one or two per area.FrancisUrquhart said:

After a slow start, probably as they'd invested so much attention in the debates, Labour now seem in the ascendancy, just. They've had the first policy 'hit' of the campaign. What's been strange about the Tory campaign so far is that there's been no real attempt to confound expectations with something like that. You'd have thought it would take one look at a poll to see that they're disliked as heartless and arrogant. I'm surprised Osborne didn't do the non dom thing tbh. Still, I'm sure he has a few rabbits. One better not be IHT though, it won't play as well as 2007.another_richard said:

They "inherited" their non-domicile status meaning they and their children could continue not paying taxes on overseas earnings for decades even if they reside here like 99% of other Britons, but the 99% of the others would have to pay tax on the same overseas earnings !
Is this fair ?0 -
"Labour's education manifesto also includes commitments to smaller classes in infants' schools, a qualified teacher in every classroom"
Now this is going to be an interesting one. They are going to have to do more than protect the education budget to achieve that, they need to be building schools like they are going out of fashion, given the massive rise in birth rates over the past few years.
And by qualified i presume they mean got their union certified teacher "badge", not that maths grads will teach maths, chemistry grads teach chemistry, you know like proper qualified, like, innit.
They better getting planting a lot of magic money trees to fund the smaller classes, as that is horrifically expensive to achieve.0 -
So where does the £50 million from, or are they borrowing it?Tykejohnno said:

Teenagers will be guaranteed face-to-face individual careers advice if Labour forms the next government... http://bbc.in/1DlK3Jd
Who, exactly, will be giving this careers advice? And what happens afterwards? There aren't thousands of trained advisers on standby, twiddling their thumbs. Unless of course it's a job creation scheme on a par with the infamous HIPs Inspectors of the previous government. Not Yvette Coopers finest hour.
Unless the plan is for teachers to do it. Standby for a mass moan-a-thon and grabbing hands reaching out for more cash.

It will cost £50 million labour saying.

Has it ever occurred to you guys that if someone like me - who could not have given a stuff about the SNP just a while ago - is thought by you to be so committed to their cause then there must be a fundamental political shift going on in Scotland.
As for Nicola. She was brilliant last week, excellent and a clear winner last night. Tonight in the words of Andrew Neil she was a women standing her ground. Murphy on the other hand comes across as not just overly agressive but rather weird.
I think his "convert" being exposed as a Labour plant is a good story. Why don't you?0 -

Ed Miliband’s wife has revealed how he led her to believe he was single when they met at a dinner party – at the home of the woman he was dating.
Justine Miliband said she was furious to discover he was seeing another woman.
She also described how that evening, the future Labour leader bored her by insisting on talking about economics.
