Not good, since it makes it more likely knee-jerk regulation will come our way.

Someone needs to be the person to stand up for betters, and especially the way the bookies data mine the hell out of winners to restrict them to pennies.

Hey bookie, if you’re offering a price you should be offering it to anyone and everyone.

    Another static MOE poll.
Are you going to keep this "MOE" nothing to see here up for another fortnight?

Lowest Lab lead for 8 months in 2 successive days

Lab lead dropping the more people see of SKS

Whats your explanation for the massive falls for LAB from mid 40s to under 40?
Starmer was the there is no alternative candidate being supported reluctantly as the tories are crap.

People probably don’t realise that Chief Superintendent Savage OBE, after achieving a 103% take up of anti-racism courses in his command, has created and led Operation Milk.

Which is where teams of undercover officers arrest black people at civil rights related demonstrations for ordering or possessing black coffee.

I'm too innumerate to calculate the numbers of OOM of difference between the money involved in this and, random examples, Mone and Greensill. The ROI on an Eton education is incalculable. I'm guessing these guys went to unacceptably minor public schools and will deservedly end up doing porridge. Serve them right for being middle class.

You forgot that the new regulations will be expensive, make it harder to place bets *and* make fraudulent behaviour easier.

Given that Reform is basically a placeholder for Farage, not that surprising.

The 2 (yes, 2) council seats that they won in May were due to Havant Labour party being too clever by half with the "only put up a partial slate" gambit.

Sporting event of the evening: Lancashire against Yorkshire in the T20 at Headingley. Yorskhire started unspectacularly but now starting to shift ominously through the gears. More entertaining than the turgid dross the England football team served up earlier and less infuriating than the debate. Even if Yorkshire are winning.

Damned if you do, and damned if you don’t.

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2024/06/20/ftse-100-markets-latest-news-bank-of-england-interest-rate/

The Bank of England has been accused of making a “political decision” after holding interest rates at a 16-year high despite inflation falling to its target.

Conservative MPs accused officials on the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of being unfairly and unduly swayed by the upcoming election.

Rishi Sunak’s last hope of a cut to borrowing costs before the general election was dashed on Thursday after the MPC voted to keep interest rates at 5.25pc.

The decision to maintain borrowing costs at the same level for the seventh consecutive meeting came despite inflation falling back to the Bank’s 2pc target this week.

(IMHO cutting rates would have been the more political decision, given what we all know is coming down the pipeline).

    • Again: fixed-odds or exchange betting are not spread-betting and you are allowed to do it under law.
    • My "feelings" about it are not relevant: as somebody once said (I think it was JSMill, but apologies if it was Ayn Rand) "if it's legal you are allowed to advocate for it". Despite the best efforts of Labour and the Conservatives, it is still - by the skin of its teeth - a free country in some respects and those respects should be cherished.
    • If a bookmaker is foolish enough to to offer fixed-odds bets or host exchange bets on - say - the value of USD in six-months they deserve everything they get. The fact that they don't do that but instead offer options and futures - a different category - illustrates this.

Will Sunak step down at the weekend and ask @David_Cameron to step in?

Would he rather be an MP who loses his seat rather than the first PM to lose in living history?

The day after the night before is an issue. The party will be in free fall.

DC won’t want to do so but he is a man who has a strong sense of public duty and experience who would put party before self.

    Just a thought …

Not £100....100 whole pounds. I think he would have a heart attack if he saw how much I used to have in play every day. Clue, more than the total for the 21st May.

Tony Bloom's betting slips were reported to have been in the £10's millions every Saturday.
I find it rather mind boggling how trivial the amounts involved are compared to how obviously terrible this looks for an election candidate.

How would you feel if they bet on market sensitive economic news?
(sorry, the answer to your question is "I wouldn't care")
Perhaps you are not a serious gambler? I occasionally lay on bfx and therefore feel quite strongly about welshing backers. Again, you are not engaging with the point. Everyone is saying SHOPLIFTING, and your response is that SHOPPING IS LEGAL. The relevance of your fixed odds vs pari mutuel distinction also beats me.
    • "Welshing" means "not paying up".
    • They didn't cheat. They played within the rules of the game known to both parties at the time of the bet. There was no crime, so the SHOPLIFTING analogy is wrong.
    • The financial market regulation is (or at least was about five years ago) different between fixed-odds betting (eg Ladbrokes) and exchange betting (eg Betfair Exchange) and British spread betting (eg IG Index) and options and futures (I forget the firm I use)
  • It occurs to me that no one senior in the main parties (as far as I know) has criticised Sunaks sudden decision to ask the King for a dissolution without even consulting the cabinet.

So did Sunak go to the King and ask for a dissolution or did the King summon Sunak and suggest a dissolution for health reasons?

Its absolutely moronic. There is no real liquidity in these novelty markets, so there isn't even life changing money on the line. So you risk this for a few £100. You got to be an absolute brain dead. That spike to several £1000 staked in one day will have already set off alarm bells at the bookies.

His drama about Scottish law in the 1970's was also impressive, and his method acting as a Westminster constituency from 1801–1918 had to be seen to be believed.

Been resisting bringing this up, but I'm going to. Others may remember/know differently, but I'm sure OGH said he had sight of the 2010 Exit Poll at around 21:30 when he was at the BBC about to be interviewed by 5Live or something, but he said he wasn't in a position to do anything with it (I guess pre-smart phone). Perhaps he wouldn't have done anything, but if I remember rightly, he said it with frustration that he couldn't take advantage. I may be wrong.

I only remember this story because I was shocked that the Exit Poll isn't top secret. Perhaps things are different these days with smart phones making betting on this sort of information being much easier.
