A group of people at a west London immigration removal centre caused "disturbance" on Saturday morning, the Home Office has claimed.
No one was injured during the incident at Harmondsworth detention centre near Heathrow Airport, but the power was still out just before 9am on Saturday, the department said.
The Home Office initially claimed that a "group of detainees left their rooms" and went into a courtyard area "armed with various weaponry", but later withdrew that claim.

Curious stat on the subject;
For Republicans, it's becoming more apparent that they value the *idea* of religion without actually participating.
In 2008, 17% of Republicans who never/seldom attended said religion was very important.
In 2021, that had risen to 27%.
To be Republican is to be religious.

Now Stokes in at 3, rather than the more aggressive Moeen.
This could go wrong.-1 -
Floridians voted in a binding referendum to overturn the ban of former convicts from voting.
De Santis has done everything in his power to overturn this result. Making it close to impossible for former convicts to know if they have paid off any outstanding fines (the GOP decided that if you had any fines outstanding you were still not eligible to vote) as there is no centralised source of what fines a person owes (smells like an illegal poll tax to me).
He's then launched a high profile campaign of arresting people for voter fraud for voting having failed to pay off fines. In every case the people arrested had been sent voter registration papers by the state and in many cases they can confirmed with the state that they were eligible to vote. Only to be arrested later under the byzantium system of secret fines.
And DeSantis boasts about this.
The policy is discouraging eligible voters from voting in Florida as they are scared about being arrested for Election fraud. The voter suppression effect is enormous - he's probably disenfranchised more Black voters than any living politician in America.
He passes laws to punish corporations who don't align with his political views.
De Santis is a fascist.1 -

I was listening last night to some crazy ranting on Radio 4 from some lunatic Republicans.
Saying that 'America was built on the Bible and is a Christian country and must go back to being that again'. Strange. For a people that so loved the 2nd Amendment, they forget the first lines of their own Constitution that explicitly say that America ISN'T a Christian country.
Some other lunatic was saying that the Democrats are the devil and should be killed, but when asked said that he wasn't advocating hate speech.
I wonder if these lunatics ever truly won, who they'd then blame when their country collapsed back into the dark ages.......1 -

LONDON. Michaelmas Term lately over, and the Lord Chancellor sitting in Lincoln’s Inn Hall. Implacable November weather. As much mud in the streets as if the waters had but newly retired from the face of the earth, and it would not be wonderful to meet a Megalosaurus, forty feet long or so, waddling like an elephantine lizard up Holborn Hill. Smoke lowering down from chimney-pots, making a soft black drizzle, with flakes of soot in it as big as full-grown snow-flakes, gone into mourning, one might imagine, for the death of the sun. Dogs, undistinguishable in mire. Horses, scarcely better; splashed to their very blinkers. Foot passengers, jostling one another’s umbrellas in a general infection of ill-temper, and losing their foot-hold at street-corners, where tens of thousands of other foot passengers have been slipping and sliding since the day broke (if the day ever broke), adding new deposits to the crust upon crust of mud, sticking at those points tenaciously to the pavement, and accumulating at compound interest.Ishmael_Z said:

Let’s ignore the religious overtones here - that’s just US specific. Not crazy, just different.
More interesting is the defensive doom-landed tone. You need a fighter/protector because you are under threat and only I can save you. Proto-fascist rather fascist in my view, but the strong man motif (and the positioning as the Chosen One) certainly has the potential to develop that way1 -

Relying on the youth vote to turnout is an absolute fool's errand. If I had to gamble (which I don't) I'd assume no youth surge and GOP comfortable winners of the House.nico679 said:
The big uncertainty is how many younger people turn out to vote on Election Day .Alistair said:Welp, Late surge of Dem Nevada ballots has raised their status from "Compeltely doomed" to "probably doomed". The 'firewall' is still way to low to give Dems the win but it is very interesting that they managed to increase it by a significant percentage yesterday. They need to add another 20k votes to be at a level to have any confidence.

An interesting finding from a CBS generic ballot poll last week showed a huge difference in house seats if younger people actually turn out. The house was then 218 to 217 to the Dems.
I’m very doubtful about younger turnout but would love to be proved wrong .
What has been interesting in Pennsylvania polls I've seen is that Fetterman is doing better with over 65s than Oz. It is the 45-65 age bracket that is going strong fro Oz.0 -

I think we should look at the failings of the Home Office to process people quickly and to deport those who should be deported quickly and to run these detention centres in a sensible way. The people at the top, Braverman, Patel, should take responsibility for their failings.StillWaters said:

I wonder if there is a difference in fash danger level between countries where support for strongman authoritarianism is mainly among the old, and those where it’s the young.
The former generally seems to reflect nostalgic rural oldies who are reasonably financially comfortable but uneasy with the direction of society. Apparent in Russia with support for Putin, MAGA in the US, the Ayatollahs in Iran.
The latter seems the case in France with RN,
India with Modi and in some of the Scandinavian and E European countries.
Gerontocratic authoritarianism self-cancelling, young authoritarianism naturally growing?0 -
