I am of the firm conviction that a snap GE is her only chance.

    Year of next UK GE:

    2022 16/1
    2023 5/1
    2024 or later 2/7

2022 has got to be worth fifty quid at that preposterously generous price?

Speculation encouraged by Labour in the hope that like the inexperienced and badly advised Brown she will go along with it and then look like a bottler, or go ahead and actually hold one and lose it.
Yeah, it's pretty transparent, isn't it? No woder people who want Sir Keir in Number Ten ASAP, like Dickson, are ramping it.
Yeah, that’s me: ginormous Sir Keir ramper 😄

You can't honestly deny that you want Sir Keir to replace whichever-Tory in Number Ten ASAP, can you?
Talking of which, how are you on Truss plays Starmer "Charisma Theorum"?

People can now try and experience a criminal justice system with no barristers. Obviously they work for the prosecution, as well as defence.
Ultimately, there is a societal reckoning due for society regarding its thinking on the question of justice.
It is one of these areas where people think that they don't want something and eventually realise that actually, of course they do want it, after all.
It is a bit like Human Rights, people like to think they only benefit terrorists, etc; but whenever there is a question of a vegetative child being resucitated or of some form of police brutality; they 'discover' that of course they do want human rights.
It just all goes down to whether you want to keep the current criminal justice system or not.
You can't have a criminal justice system that pays highly specialist and educated participants, with massive levels of responsibility, less than the minimum wage with no job security. It was always going to eventually fail and this is the moment.
In the end this problem has been made worse by Johnson and his casual 'lefty lawyer' slurs, just blame the blob, cut it to the bone and beyond, whatever and ever.
Eventually the chickens come home to roost.
You want to create a new justice system with no barristers; well good luck with that.

    Welcome back, @MoonRabbit .

    Thanks.

I’m back! Like an over excited sewage pipe splurging all over the PB family beach. 😇
What happened? Were you on holiday?
Banned yes, but it was clearly my own fault - for a brief moment I turned the leadership race into a lewdership race with my saucy postcard sense of humour - so had long conversation with myself about repeated bans for same over sexed thing to put improvements in place before approaching the admins again, as this is premier betting site not Reddit I told myself that is right thing to do.

went racing at York and Cyclefree later actually posted the amazing race I had won on, but that made me really yearn to be a PBer again and respond to posts 😭

So I’m back for ever, I ain’t getting myself banned again. I want to be able to like posts and respond to them. All three ban have been related with too unnecessary and saucy pictures. So no sexy pictures from me, and I pause for thought before each posting, so no ban.
Well, saucy postcards or not, good to have you back :)
It was a photo shopped upskirt of Liz showing her kegs as she entered number 10 actually - but if it was a drawing like a saucy postcode or cartoon in paper it probably wouldn’t’ take have been a ban.

Even Sometimes I might not have been banned but my picture posts still went wrong I now suspect in my reflection. The night before my ban the question asked what is Putin’s deepest darkest fear in room 101, I posted a picture of Daria Kasatkina and Natalia Zabiiako together - if you understood it was them it’s actually a sharp satirical answer to what Putin finds in room 101? but thinking about it I now appreciate, if you didn’t know that, it just looks weird nonsense picture and way off topic, in this way my jokes using pictures humour might often gone wrong often even without me banned.

I can attest to the rains in Switzerland as I was on holiday there last week. We were lucky that in the early part of the week the rains fell mainly at night and we had good days including a lovely 30c day on a boat on the Brienzersee along with swimming in it!

We ended up coming home a day early as it was due to torrential downpour all day Friday. The first part of the journey home through Switzerland to Germany early on Friday morning was very tricky due to the intensity of the rain. Here's a photo of one of the "atmospheric" evenings when the skies were about to open.

I think this occasion is going to be the exception. She carries a lot of baggage which will hold her back. She is a poor debater, too shrill and shifts from one stance to another. She may pick up a point or two but will not change the general narrative either on accession or later.

Nah, if she bounces to 41 to 42%ish, Labour will be on lowish 30s. And she'd be getting the odd 44 or 45 on a 10% bounce. She wont get that bounce though and Lab will indeed be biggest party imo

Fucking Hell. Gas up to 560GBp per therm, up 21.5% today.

    https://tradingeconomics.com/commodity/uk-natural-gas

"UK natural gas futures were trading around the 550-pence-a-them mark, a level not seen since their March peak, underpinned by prospects of further supply disruptions and elevated demand from the EU. Russia's Gazprom said it would cut flows through the Nord Stream pipeline to Germany for three days of maintenance at the end of August, exacerbating concerns about supplies and raising the risk of a recession in Europe if Russia's natural gas squeeze widens. The state-owned energy company Gazprom has already reduced flows through the Nord Stream pipeline to roughly 20% of its capacity, citing issues with turbines. On top of that, a historic drought triggered by an arid summer that set heat records across Europe threatens to halt energy shipments along the Rhine River, exacerbating concerns in an already tight market."

Thank God our new PM comes to power offering hope, not handouts, and NI cuts for the wealthy and tax cuts for big business.

The job of keeping the seasoned and dried LibDems burning on the fire was surely not one that fell within the purview of a butler, far less ones as magisterial as Jeeves and Beach.

The housemaids, before emptying the chamber pots of dripping wet LibDems, no doubt attended to the lighting of the fires so all was warm and toasty before Sir Boris and family got up.

One of few things that Trump was right about, was that the US and UK were the only countries pulling their weight in NATO, and that everyone else needed to meet the 2% defence spending target - especially the Germans.

Poland, Greece, Slovakia and all of the Baltics spend more than 2%.

The UK cheats by counting pension payments (including mine) toward defence spending.

In the Woodward books, the veracity of which have never been challenged, Trump comes across as absolutely obsessed with eliminating US defence commitements abroad. He was only prevented from withdrawing 30,000 troops from South Korea by Gary Cohn taking the paperwork off his desk before he could sign it.

In his next term when he goes full "Dark MAGA" there are going to be far fewer constraints on his caprice.
IIRC, under the coalition, the move to including pensions in defence spending was as move to a common NATO definition of defence spending.

"Throw another LibDem on the fire, Jeeves."
Beach at Blandings Castle, surely. Jeeves buttled in a flat in central London which I'm sure was centrally heated.

Of course, yes, though perhaps under the housekeeper.

Truss should get a bounce but it is unlikely to be as big as Major, Brown, May or Johnson got. For starters Truss is the continuity Boris candidate. Major was at least somewhat ideologically different from Thatcher as was Brown from Blair and Johnson from May and indeed even May from Cameron so it seemed more of a change in government. In fact the biggest difference between Truss and Boris is she is more of a tax and spending cutter

I guess it's possible (although I sense not) that Truss is doing a Starmer - ie she's telling the members what they want to hear in order to get the leadership but once ensconced will change and become something else entirely.
It's possible - but she is going to have to change an awful lot of what she has promised because what she has promised just isn't possible.

I note that over the weekend she suggested a review of IR35 - I can point to £70bn reasons why that will never get anywhere...
TBF - abolishing IR35 might bring in more tax than keeping it. When it was introduced, the tax take went noticeably down and, IIRC, it has barely "broke even" in nearly 20 years.
I will give you the Treasury argument.

Employment numbers are reducing as more companies move towards using contingency and freelance workers.
This is having a significant impact on Employer NI.

And given the amount of money generated by Employer NI we cannot take the risk that that money will erode away. That literally was the argument used for the changes to IR35 in the public sector (2017) and large firms (2021)..

Now I wouldn't have a problem if the discussion was about employment (as employment law and employment tax law is a utter mess that doesn't relate in whole sets of places) but it's not that - it's a story about IR35 because Liz thinks she will get some votes out of it...
The problem is that the IR35 system as it now exists is broken. HMRC were pissed off because they were doing their normal trick of pushing the remit of the legislation way beyond where it should have been and ended up losing large numbers of court cases where they had said contractors should be inside when clearly under their own rules they should have been outside.

As a result they changed the scheme to take responsibility for deciding who should be inside and who outside away from themselves and the contractor and place it on the end user client. With the threat of massive fines for any company that got it wrong.

The result is that almost all large companies are now using blanket decisions to put all contractors inside IR35 even those who should not be. It is safer for them and HMRC love it.

Of course the result is a massive reduction in consultants to the extent now that, in my business, projects are having to be delayed or abandoned because they do not have the skill sets to complete them.

IR35 can be a sensible system. But it needs to be properly managed and operated and HMRC have shown themselves to be incapable to doing that.
The problem is that IR35 is lipstick on a pig. The problem comes from NI and a sensible long-term solution to abolish it would be better.
Too much money in it and no chance that removing it would result in workers receiving big enough pay increases to ensure they aren't worse off.
That's why I said a long-term solution. It ought to be phased out over time.

Sunak and Brown have done the opposite though, making the problem worse.
What is interesting about say, a UBI, is discussing it with a politician.

They hate the “crudity” of a simple approach. They adore lots of edge cases and the laws get longer and longer.

I remember one MP being aghast, when I explained UBI - at the vast amount of administration that would be axed….

Is Moon Rabbit going to admit to being a Tory now

As you rightly pointed out to them Horse I never praised Johnson or his rubbish cabinet. So how can many posters be wrong about me and what I honestly believe needs explaining. It was obviously frustrating banned as I couldn’t reply.

To be fair I thought, I could be a bit all over the road to some of you - but I concluded that’s only your own silly fault for assuming all the anti Tory coalition today are the same thing on the same side. They are not, they wouldn’t be passionate about their different parties they are in if they were.

Let me explain how proper Conservatives can be voting Lib Dem right now. Becuase I have been raised by conservatives not lefty’s, I am just like pure HY in supporting monarchy and Church of England. But there is a big difference between Conservative ideology and right wing populism ideology and it’s people poles apart.

Right wing Populism pushes the idea of popular sovereignty above the independence of democratic institutions, and the professionalism of the representatives of those institutions, conservatism does not. populism like Trump and Boris are populist opportunism masquerading as values and agenda for government, a crusading ideology pretending it is the voice of all the people, undemocratically deaf to anyone with a different view. They have hi jacked conservatism in UK, and they are trashing it. Instead of listening to criticism from CoE they instinctively attack the CoE, that is not UK conservatism. Likewise their undermining of civil service and attack on all the counterbalances of power - this too is not UK Conservatism.

Hope that explains how proper Conservatives can be voting Lib Dem right now, as high time to see right wing populism as being the main enemy of UK conservatives now, and oppose it like Liz Cheney opposing the Trump garbage. This explains my Conservative instincts coming across, whilst my enemy is not Tory’s but right wing populism. It also suggests HY is no longer a proper Conservative for sticking with the taken over Conservative party.

Alternatively maybe I take Christian values far more seriously than my family and others who are still voting Conservative, so ideas like “beware apartheid of the pocket” from Lord David Steel, keeps my vote Lib Dem forever and is my natural home despite how I was socialised 🤷‍♀️ Ancient tribes used to have a first birth into families, and second teenage birth into your tribe.

Of course it was, which is why reported defence spending increased by the pension commitment. Or was it used to cover yet more Tory defence cuts?

They fed off each other, I reckon. All sides looked at the opposition and thought "they're so unelectable that we don't have to try to please the public next time, so we'll just indulge ourselves."

Lib Dems as much as anyone.

    Indeed yes.

Speaking of which, I see the cheating racists (who are probably still going to be force relegated in October) have been busy thieving players from other counties again, and trying to make sure they're not all whiter than an accountant on being showing Liz Truss' tax plans.

A pasta joke has been voted as Dave’s funniest joke of the Edinburgh Fringe.

Masai Graham was the winner, with the joke:

"I tried to steal spaghetti from the shop, but the female guard saw me and I couldn't get pasta.

FFS was this the fringe for 6 year olds?
Its a shit joke, i mean seriously shit. Having to put in 'female guard' makes it so painfully contrived

The runners up were way better

My attempts to combine nitrous oxide and Oxo cubes made me a laughing stock 🙂
I once took nitrous oxide and laxatives, just for shits and giggles.

Although in their first year they earn under £20,000 after expenses and do not earn £40,000+ after expenses until at least their third year
    Barristers are not salaried.

Criminal barristers vote to go on indefinite strike from next month

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-62629776

They came bottom of the 'public support for strikes' table so i'd expect the govt to take the hardlineiest hardline with them
People can now try and experience a criminal justice system with no barristers.

See also Free Movement of Labour.
We badly need free movement of Labour if we're to save our economy.

    From Opposition to Government...
I had a response from Alun Cairns. I had accused him of opportunism in his switch from Sunak to Truss. Although he claimed them both to be "strong candidates".

He explained that the change was necessary because Truss was the candidate most likely to save the Union. You can image my lengthy critique in response to his workings out!

I suggested that if his main aim was to save the Union, a vote for Starmer's Labour Party at the next GE would be more useful than his current vote for Truss.

I also suggested that with a Conservative victory at the next GE the Union was f*****, so I pointed him in the direction of HYUFD's plan B (military intervention, and beyond).
To be honest with you, I have been surprise by the strength of feeling from Tory grass roots towards Sturgeon and SNP - revealed to us by this democratic exercise.

“I supporting Truss as she will kick Sturgeons butt.” Seems to be the gist again and again. The widespread strength of feeling, hatred and anger there has surprised me to be honest. I havn’t really noticed it in the handful of Conservatives I have been around.
Well I certainly hate the SNP more than Labour and the LDs and the feeling is mutual from most SNP to we Tories. Most SNP rhetoric is how awful the Tories are as UK government and in turn we will just continue to refuse indyref2 in power

    SKS shrugs

So in effect a maximum wage at private companies, not likely to help UK companies attract the best international talent to lead them
At a certain point - I'm not sure salary becomes the main driver in attracting talent. "You could make £50K instead of £30K" - "ooh, tell me more". "You could make £350K instead of £300K." "Meh." Working conditions and sheer job interest become more important.

Of course it was, which is why reported defence spending increased by the pension commitment. Or was it used to cover yet more Tory defence cuts?
It was the agreed NATO definition - which meant unanimous sign off. I’m quite sure that Cameron liked the fact that it took spending over 2%

As did, I’m sure, every other country not counting pensions at the time. A fair number counted pensions as part of spending previously, IIRC.
