No way. Not a chance. None. Nada. He won’t quit. There aren’t enough MPs even willing to risk one of these fabled letters on an anonymous basis for fear of what comes next. He’s the nation’s collective penance for whatever ill has offended the Almighty and we shall all suffer accordingly for another three years.

Wines of Moldova were one key reason why the Russians insisted on (re-) taking it (Bessarabia) in from the Romanians post 1944.

About suffering they were never wrong,
The old Masters: how well they understood
Its human position: how it takes place
    While someone else is eating or opening a window or just walking dully along;
How, when the aged are reverently, passionately waiting
For the miraculous birth, there always must be
Children who did not specially want it to happen, skating
On a pond at the edge of the wood:
    They never forgot
That even the dreadful martyrdom must run its course
Anyhow, in a corner, some untidy spot
Where the dogs go on with their doggy life, and the torturer's horse
Scratches its innocent behind on a tree.

Sure, every human tragedy is a yooman tragedy, but shit happens irrespective of what anyone else is doing. While your spouse of 50 years is dying someone somewhere is having a dump/wank/gin and tonic. This stuff is being overplayed. Not that I'm not delighted it is, mind.

Yes, me and my colleagues bought ours off Amazon in April 2020, as hospital stocks were heavily rationed.

Are we getting to the point when laying a 2022 departure is getting a whiff of value about it? When you remember the cringingly embarrassing way in which Tory backbenchers let the wretched May hang on and on and on despite losing what anyone else would have regarded as votes of no confidence time after time you begin to wonder. And this party is much more united on some things than hers was with the 3rd column Boris so brutally dispatched.

Yes, and the craven moral cowardice of the planted questions at PMQs shows how little spine they have.

A very plausible outcome of a VONC is Johnson winning because of various factions trying to prevent a rival from winning. Then we have to wait for 2023 for the next go.

What about the argument though, your view is a bit binary? In or out. Leave remain. And Brexit always means Brexit.

There is probably a billion changes that can be made to Boris Brexit and it could still be called Brexit?

And the question, is there only one direction for Brexit from here? It can probably go this way or that. To me it’s unclear if Boris is a blocker or enabler in now divulging from the European social model, many would call true Brexit and the whole point of doing Brexit.

I’ll give you one policy example in how Brexit can change if there is new leadership, but still be Brexit means Brexit. Many business backers of Brexit didn’t like Boris tough stance on visa’s in face of too many vacancies hurting business, new leadership could have a more business friendly approach on that question. The temporary workers that get the harvest in, cooks in care homes, waitress in hotels etc

A change of face won't prevent the emotional outpouring. May just cement the Conservative as the target.

It's generally a group that is reliably pro-Boris and they've all deserted him.

The big change I saw tonight was that where until now the worry is that a new leader might put Brexit at risk of backsliding, now Boris staying and losing to Labour is seen as the big risk to ensuring Brexit isn't watered down. I think that view is probably shared by the ERG. Keeping Boris is seen as the riskier Brexit option for the Spartans than dumping him, at least that's the view I got today from City hedgies.

    Interesting. thanks.

Well done that Bristol jury. The police were too scared to intervene as a man set about the Gill sculpture (one of the most poetic pieces of public statuary in central London) so he was allowed to continue for two hours, thereby significantly damaging it, and the cops did absolutely nothing. They merely bleated "please come down and we can talk about it"

    Literally.

We are lost. We have lost all cultural backbone and self confidence. We are finished as a civilisation, from Paris to Portland Place, from Seattle to Saint Denis. Endgame

We will probably be allowed to boast about our property prices for a few more years

I would add that waiting the short time to Sue Gray's report is wise as she is reporting on all the alleged parties, and I would expect further revelations may well result in Boris resigning, or at the very least Brady telling him to do so

I would just say that those who hope Boris going will see a movement to rejoin the EU will be very disappointed though an improved relationship outside the EU would be desirable

Wines of Moldova were one key reason why the Russians insisted on (re-) taking it (Bessarabia) in from the Romanians post 1944.
Is that true? Brilliant, if so

Because the wine is just amazing. This is maybe the 3rd or 4th stunner I have tried

All of south east European wine is making a stellar comeback (the new Greek white wines! Ah!) but Moldova in particular is superb value
It's on my to-visit list. Probably a loop through Ukraine, Transnistria, Romania and maybe back into Ukraine
Yes, I have been thinking about it too, but would add Bukovina and Odessa to the trip. Both sound really interesting.

No doubt they are massive supporters of his levelling up agenda.

Well done that Bristol jury. They merely bleated "please come down and we can talk about it"

The problem for Boris is that it’s very hard to blow off this scandal. It impacts people personally. It’s not just some theoretical wrongdoing that people can rationalise as a “but he’s on my side so I can live with it.”

The longer he is allowed to continue in office the longer the rot will spread and contaminate even more of the Tory Party and its policy ambitions with every passing week. They should just take a swig of bourbon and cut off the infection. It’s hard to see how the patient survives otherwise.

Wasn't it more of the issue with the guy's safety? He was up a ladder and so on. Possibly mentally unstable?
Leon has found a reason to attack the forces of wokery. Leave him be, he is happy.
Even when it's an anti woke nutter attacking a statue, it's the fault of the woke. It must be wonderful to be someone for whom every question has the same answer.
Or, more simply, I disapprove of public art being randomly vandalised and the fucking idiot thugs that do it getting away with it. This applies to the anti-paedo nutter attacking the Gill statue AND the posho twats rolling Colston into the river

I submit that my position is the opinion held by most people in this country. Don't go around smashing up or destroying art. If you dislike the art, for whatever reason, we are a democracy and you have multiple avenues to express your discontent and see your iconoclastic desires realised, or not

That's the whole damn point of a democracy. All else is mob rule, or a police state. Take your pick

NEW. @BorisJohnson satisfaction scores in GB 🇬🇧 now half those of @EmmanuelMacron in France 🇫🇷

He's doing worse than a French President, that truly is a national embarrassment, Boris Johnson needs to go now.
Worse than that, he's doing worse than the worst ever French President.

Not forgetting the one that fell out of a train while drunk, the one who turned up at a formal dinner with all his medals on but nothing else at all and the one who died of a heart attack while being fellated.
I would have thought "dying of a heart attack while being fellated AND BEING FRENCH PRESIDENT" would make him a French national hero

He's certainly in my top ten politicians of all time, and I've only just heard of him
I'm surprised that there was no love shown on here for Paris Police 1900 recently on BBC4 which starts with the act of death by BJ and goes on to all sorts of fin de siècle debauchery. I loved it.
It was excellent - I mentioned it at the fag-end of the previous thread. Looking forward to series 2.
What is Death by Boris Johnson?
Involves letting the bodies pile high I believe.

I hear the bell tolling for Boris
  • So what's the consensus:

    1) The party was Boris's idea
    2) The party was Martin Reynolds's idea but with Boris's approval
    3) The party was Martin Reynolds's idea with Boris not really knowing but not being bothered about it

    I think we can discount:

    4) The party was Martin Reynolds's idea with Boris not really knowing but being unhappy about it

Sub 30 for Tory or Labour is when you are done for. 30 is bedrock support level.

Labour still only on 38%, could have been far worse than that. I was expecting Labour to at least hit 40% after this onslaught and be over 10% ahead and be back to near Blair pre 1997 levels based on all the hype. Instead Starmer merely matching Ed Miliband's lead over Cameron in December 2013.

So movement to the LDs and RefUK still on 4% and clearly some Tories gone DK but those can be reclaimed. However I would expect a VONC still in due course, though on those numbers Boris could still survive it

Just had dinner/pub with some City associates, a few donors among them. Until now they've been behind Boris, willing to laugh off any suggestions that he personally had broken lockdowns. The mood has definitely soured. Lots of personal anger that weddings and funerals were cancelled in lockdown while Boris partied at Number 10.

No doubt they are massive supporters of his levelling up agenda.
I think you are right in your point. Brexit voters maybe should be considered as a coalition, not a settled block, not all on the same side at all how they wish to pull it now. The correct way to view Brexit is like the hedgers in the anecdote, Brexit is not binary, it’s not a done deal or static in the direction it can now take.

In my view under Rishi’s new leadership, there will be a more pragmatic approach to business need which Boris is clearly blocking. And that’s the main driver of his downfall.
Finance people are all over Dishy Rishi like the proverbial rash, believe me.
It’s all becoming a bit understandable and predictable isn’t it.
