    “For the English”??

Surely the rest of the Celtic British nations - Ireland, Wales, that one with midges - are joining in the jubilation of the dominant nation, England? In a festival of British pride?

Anyway. Beating Germany. In a knockout. What a pleasant feeling

One can’t help noticing that this has not happened since we joined the European Union. As soon as we Brexit - bingo

    The nation advances

It's a fair point. I'd say it was the first victory in a knock-out game that England weren't expected to win since 1966.

And booong the German national anthem
Of all the national anthems you are allowed to boo, surely the German one qualifies?

    “Deutschland Uber alles”

Imagine the criticism if that was the title of the U.K. one?
Is that it's title? I though they didn't even sing that verse anymore.

And historical connotations aside for Germany's, aren't most anthems about how their nationis better than others?

It’s actually a fair question. Why should the EU field about 73 teams, when the “region-nations” within the EU arguably have less autonomy than the noble states that make up the UK

They moan about us entering England, Wales, the porridgey one, well, maybe it’s time there was one EU team. And that’s that

OK they’d win quite a lot, but it would be equable. Down with France and Italy and these useless provinces that barely ever win. Let’s have a proper EU team selected by the EU Commission

We beat them in Euro 2012 (group stage) and QF in the 2018 WC.

One thing England definitely have team spirit. When England scored, even those I think unlucky to be left out e.g. Foden was just so excited. Even the end of the game I saw Calvert-Lewin (who didn't even make the bench, which is crazy decision) was there really pumped.

Compare to France, Mbappe loses and they all bugger off leaving him to it. With 4 days before reports in the French press saying not happy campers, especially with Mbappe behaviour.

Obviously much easier when you are winning to losing, but you still often see footballers there with a strop on if there were selected and the team are winning.

Don't do this. You're spoiling things.
    For you, Kinabalu, for you
No, you were writing the team off whilst I was behind them and calling it all spot on.

So I can celebrate but you can't. If you do it's inauthentic and it spoils my glow - which is unfair because I've earned it.
The truly painful thing here is that you slightly believe this, don’t you?

Expectations should not be that low - this is an unimpressive German team, perhaps the worst since anyone can remember.

It's called Deutschlandlied (song of Germany) and they only sing the third verse now, which is the one that doesn't have them "uber alles"
And the music was written by an Austrian (Haydn), who spent much of his life in what was then and still is in Hungary. Of course, I dare say he would have considered himself "German" if you asked him what his nationality was.
Oh, and the lyrics were written on an island that at the time was British (Heligoland).

I don’t think it’s so much that they ‘haven’t been learned’ as ‘they won’t be applied.’

We all know it was a bloody fool mistake but the squealing of the travel industry and affluent apartment owners will again be louder than the voice of reason.
We don’t say England should be locking down and taking precautions in the face of rapidly rising numbers, so why should we judge Spain any differently? They aren’t as advanced in vaccination as the U.K. but does that matter? They’ve still probably vaccinated many of the most vulnerable.

Of course he is. Always has been. That’s why Cameron was so freaked out - justifiably - when he heard that Boris was backing Leave. Suddenly a Leave win was very do-able, from almost nowhere

Boris Johnson is already the most consequential politician in British history since Churchill, alongside Thatcher and Blair. And he may yet out-do them.

This is not a value judgment. I think in many ways he is terrible. Just an observation

I wish the Germans still had their unofficial 1948 West German anthem, the Trizonesien Song with this chorus -

We are the natives of Trizonesia,
    Hi-di-chimmela-chimmela-chimmela-chimmela-boom!
We have little maids with fiery wild personalities,
    Hi-di-chimmela-chimmela-chimmela-chimmela-boom!

Phrases such as Uber Alles and Uber Allen are very touchy subject. Uber alles because of the infamous Olympics under Nazi regime and uber allen was WWI propaganda.
I don't think "Deutschland Uber Alles" was ever used as the title, and even if it's deemed non-woke to that verse these days, the meaning was to put loyalty a united Germany above loyalty to the various monarchical states that were at the time loosely grouped into a confederation. Probably the real objection to the first verse is that it talks about the territorial limits of the old German Confederation, and mentions places that er, aren't very close to the modern borders of Germany any more.

The second verse is not objectionable, but is about the virtues of German wine, women and song (no, really) so I guess is not serious enough to be the actual words sung at events etc.

Interestingly, the Deutschlandlied was only adopted as the national anthem after the end of the German monarchies in 1918. Although Haydn wrote the tune as a birthday present to the Austrian (well, still Holy Roman at that point) Emperor, Hoffmann von Fallersleben's words were considered too republican for it to be officially used until Germany actually became a republic. The Imperial national anthem under Kaiser Bill etc used the same music as God Save the Queen.

No-one seems to be very sure where that (i.e. GTSQ's) music came from but it was at one time used for the national anthems of many other countries, and still is by Liechtenstein, as well as the American patriotic song My Country 'Tis of Thee.

Is that it's title? I though they didn't even sing that verse anymore.

And historical connotations aside for Germany's, aren't most anthems about how their nationis better than others?
It's called Deutschlandlied (song of Germany) and they only sing the third verse now, which is the one that doesn't have them "uber alles"
And the music was written by an Austrian (Haydn), who spent much of his life in what was then and still is in Hungary. Of course, I dare say he would have considered himself "German" if you asked him what his nationality was.
Oh, and the lyrics were written on an island that at the time was British (Heligoland).
    That’s why they’re so Bighting.
Did you really have to Dogger us with your nautical punning?
Itsire way of passing the time.

Hampden looks so sad with barely any fans 🙁

It's funny how quickly the world is moving at the moment, at the beginning of the tournament that would have been a respectable number and a decent atmosphere, but at this stage in the tournament it does look a tad forlorn in comparison to some of the big games recently.

Worth remembering that the England v Germany game should have been in Dublin.

Can we just take a minute and remember Big_G predicting Wales to go through and England to go out.

Mmm and YOU saying we had no chance against Germany. ☺
It's a defence mechanism after 20 years of not beating Germany in tournaments. I can't allow myself to believe, it just ends in disappointment.
Yes, fair enough. Totally understand. So you keep doing that. It's working.

No - this is a team with a lefty remainery vibe. Their success will help Labour if anything.

We can already write the script.

The Left will say it's down to BLM and Wokeness.

The Right will say it's down to post Brexit confidence and swagger.
And booong the German national anthem
Of all the national anthems you are allowed to boo, surely the German one qualifies?

    Unity and justice and freedom
    For the German fatherland!
Towards these let us all strive
    Brotherly with heart and hand!
    Unity and justice and freedom
    Are the safeguards of fortune;
Flourish in the radiance of this fortune,
    Flourish, German fatherland!
Flourish in the radiance of this fortune,
    Flourish, German fatherland!

You can see why they lost after singing this greetings card pap.
Also, not Woke enough. Fatherland indeed. Parentland, surely!!

It's definitely a fair point and the whole tournament has been a bit strange with the home advantage for a lot of teams. And having said all that the atmosphere in this second half is still very good and much better than the first half.

I think only the first Wales game in Azerbaijan has had anything less than a decent atmosphere in the whole tournament.

Sweden v Ukraine has been pretty good so far. I'm thinking that Sweden would be the tougher opponent, but I'm not sure there's much in it.

    Ah well, I’ve learnt something...
Phrases such as Uber Alles and Uber Allen are very touchy subject. Uber alles because of the infamous Olympics under Nazi regime and uber allen was WWI propaganda.
It's also debatable whether uber alles is in anyway sinister. When the anthem was written Germany was only recently unified so a lot of people felt more loyalty to their former state than Germany. The verse really exhorts people to put German interests above personal interests and the interests of say Hanover. No-one ever complains about the French anthem despite it being incredibly bloody and warlike.

I have to say I find Leon's support for the England football team about as convincing as Gordon Brown's was

    “For the English”??

Surely the rest of the Celtic British nations - Ireland, Wales, that one with midges - are joining in the jubilation of the dominant nation, England? In a festival of British pride?

Anyway. Beating Germany. In a knockout. What a pleasant feeling

One can’t help noticing that this has not happened since we joined the European Union. As soon as we Brexit - bingo

    The nation advances

May be Boris is a lucky general…
Of course he is. Always has been. That’s why Cameron was so freaked out - justifiably - when he heard that Boris was backing Leave. Suddenly a Leave win was very do-able, from almost nowhere

Boris Johnson is already the most consequential politician in British history since Churchill, alongside Thatcher and Blair. And he may yet out-do them.

This is not a value judgment. I think in many ways he is terrible. Just an observation
Yes - he has reinvented his party and almost single handedly reshaped the political landscape - almost certainly to a greater degree than either Blair or Thatcher.

I want Ukraine to win. They owe us a couple of own goals for sending our gunboat to emphasise their sovereignty over Crimea.....

Ukraine? “Sweden”? Are these even countries, technically?

Who the fuck speaks Swekrainian, or whatever they call it

They should just give England the cup now, and we can let Scotch people briefly touch it once every three years on the special day they eat cooked meat under a roof

It is a real issue, yes. I'm feeling bullish and vindicated - just generally very UP - but I can't be sharing joy with you if you're going to get all jingoistic. We need to agree on a lingua franca for celebrating England wins. Exuberant but with boundaries.

Radical Pessimism is the way forward. If enough of us insist with sufficient conviction that it will all go to pot, then the Universe will drive England to a glorious victory just to prove us all wrong.

Now, everyone repeat: It's all going too well, they are bound to fall flat on their faces in the quarter-final, it will be an unmitigated disaster.
