The scientists will inevitably be more on the cautious side, the politicians will need to read the public mood, it seems to me that Boris is doing that quite well at the moment, even though personally I agree that the restrictions should go.MaxPB said:

I am not an opinion pollster but I would guess that people will support the current level of restrictions until such point as the double vaccination programme is concluded or the hospitalisation rate from the current problematic variant subsides. Thats the vibe I get. People seem to think that the current level of restriction isn't too difficult to live with rightly or wrongly. The scientists will inevitably be more on the cautious side, the politicians will need to read the public mood, it seems to me that Boris is doing that quite well at the moment, even though personally I agree that the restrictions should go.MaxPB said:

The cross party, multi administration psyops conspiracy theory is too far fetched for me. The only non-“exotic” explanation that makes even remote sense, is that mundane misinterpreted observations have captured the imagination of a hardcore of the US security state and it’s taken on a life of its own with each retelling. Secret US tech and foreign tech make no sense at all to me.Leon said:

By the way I meant to say to Topping yesterday, anyone that uses the phrase “little green men” in a pejorative way at this point of the game, marks themselves out as being at best intellectually incurious. If I’m polite about it. And in any case, if you’ve paid attention since as far back as Mulder and Scully, it should be “little grey men”.
As it happens my explanation has switched back to a mixture of hyperbole, pilot error - and elaborate
US psy-ops exploiting the same, but that is still a huge story - esp given the scale of the establishment reaction. Anyone who dismisses this as a ‘normal’ UFO flap really isn’t paying attention
And I do not rule out other conclusions
But to be honest this looks less likely than the simple conclusion that there is non human technology on earth / in its atmosphere (which has probably been here a long time, probably predating us). There really is no reason why this should be considered a fantastical explanation, it’s the most simple and logical explanation of the wealth of public evidence. And of course the multiple statements by various individuals with past or present top classification security status.0 -

Let's see where we are next month. After all, there are plenty more vaccination excuses left to use: presumably the vast bulk of the under 40s won't have been jabbed twice, the vaccines are supposedly much less effective against Delta on a single dose, some of the youngsters won't have had their first jabs for long enough even for those to take effect, many of the scientists are almost certain to shift the target to children, and the modellers will scream that the anti-vaxxers plus the elderly for whom the vaccinations haven't worked well will still be entirely sufficient to destroy the NHS if we don't lock down, to a greater or lesser extent, quite literally forever.Philip_Thompson said:

Its ridiculous this garbage was swallowed from the scientists and its irritating nobody with the numeracy and balls to stand up to them said "wait, this is ridiculous" or even "what JCVI groups will these tens of thousands dead be from ...
... But in 4 weeks time every single adult in the country will be vaccinated that wants to be, anyone left unvaccinated its their own damned fault by then, which isn't the case today. In 4 weeks time there'll be millions more with second jabs.
So as ridiculous as this extension is, its not permanent.
It's what the public health fascists ultimately want, and they're determined to have it.
Its not about real public heath its about the desire to be the savvier, and all the kudos, respect and power that comes with it.
COVID and the pandemic are much more 'front page news' making it both harder for them to go too over the top but also more seductive.
I'm not saying all the people coming out with modals started off as bad people, just that ones you have been impotent and parsed for 15 months it will be very hard to let that go.0 -

I wish they wouldn't keep saying 'break the link between infections and Hospitalisations' because it makes it sound like cases can sky rocket in short order and Hospitalisations will just sit limply at nothing. To state the bleeding obvious, if you think about it for the briefest second, you realise that is patently untrue, yet it has a powerful hold on the mind set.
It has been more a gradual divergence over time - cases fall 10%, Hospitalisations 20%, deaths 30% and so on week after week. They still head in broad synchronisation.
As the roughest estimate it looks to me like Hospitalisations have fallen around 2/3 relative to infections, and deaths about 4/5 relative to Hospitalisations since New Year.
Broadly, if Bolton peak infection levels become widespread, i.e. under current regs, we'd end up up to around 5000 people in hospital, depending on how much the peak was staggered between different localities. I'm not sure what the multiplier with different regulations would actually be, but it would be a significant wave. 5000 is probably manageable and still allows for some progress on the cancer etc backlog during the summer months, two or three times that, not so much. Mind you, a bigger peak would probably blow out fairly quick as both infection and vaccination propelled us quite rapidly towards Delta's higher herd immunity bar (again, a convergence not a point event).
So, I think holding was ultimately the right decision. I've been a dyed in the wool incrementalist throughout this pandemic, and the July one-hit pinky promise unlock looks rash to me.
I'd like to see more imagination as to the how the roadmap might change to allow unlocking to progress even if that is in bits - e.g. changing all the personal bits of legislation to advice, this summer is the right time to emulate elements of the Swedish approach (I'd like to see that sooner if possible). I'd like full view on how businesses can operate in the months to come (e.g. no vertical drinking anywhere, but bar service OK, intervals at full cinemas etc etc). I'd like to see isolation replaced by self-testing for contacts, I'd like to see all advised vaccine or test or formal exemption for attending group events, I'd like to see masking gone for more distanced/short-term indoor interactions, e.g. supermarkets.
Even if we can't unlock we can push things forward bit by bit by bit, until the links of cases to harms are so diverged it doesn't matter.1 -
