It has been more a gradual divergence over time - cases fall 10%, Hospitalisations 20%, deaths 30% and so on week after week. They still head in broad synchronisation.
As the roughest estimate it looks to me like Hospitalisations have fallen around 2/3 relative to infections, and deaths about 4/5 relative to Hospitalisations since New Year.
Broadly, if Bolton peak infection levels become widespread, i.e. under current regs, we'd end up up to around 5000 people in hospital, depending on how much the peak was staggered between different localities. I'm not sure what the multiplier with different regulations would actually be, but it would be a significant wave. 5000 is probably manageable and still allows for some progress on the cancer etc backlog during the summer months, two or three times that, not so much. Mind you, a bigger peak would probably blow out fairly quick as both infection and vaccination propelled us quite rapidly towards Delta's higher herd immunity bar (again, a convergence not a point event).
So, I think holding was ultimately the right decision. I've been a dyed in the wool incrementalist throughout this pandemic, and the July one-hit pinky promise unlock looks rash to me.
I'd like to see more imagination as to the how the roadmap might change to allow unlocking to progress even if that is in bits - e.g. changing all the personal bits of legislation to advice, this summer is the right time to emulate elements of the Swedish approach (I'd like to see that sooner if possible). I'd like full view on how businesses can operate in the months to come (e.g. no vertical drinking anywhere, but bar service OK, intervals at full cinemas etc etc). I'd like to see isolation replaced by self-testing for contacts, I'd like to see all advised vaccine or test or formal exemption for attending group events, I'd like to see masking gone for more distanced/short-term indoor interactions, e.g. supermarkets.
Even if we can't unlock we can push things forward bit by bit by bit, until the links of cases to harms are so diverged it doesn't matter.1 -
