Another swings and roundabouts gain for the SNP in Ayr which may prove to be very bad news for Joan McAlpine on the list.

He did say that many weren't letting us in yet.

EU will be very difficult given the EuCo dogma about open borders, and the level of average COVID cases there running at a level we dropped below in *early-mid February* .

I think that Portugal is the interesting one on this list - what are they doing with their Spanish border?

I'd say the next places will be Malta if cases fall, and Canada who are vaccinating like gangbusters.

A suggestion about the meaning of the votes so far: These votes enforce two trends

    1) The move towards voting for power. Labour doing OK in Wales, SNP slightly on the up in Scotland, Tories doing better in most of England especially where they were already making progress.

In each case the immediate holder of the purse strings and power is consolidating.

Not only is identity politics being enforced, so is pork barrel. Eg in part Hartlepool is saying 'Me Too' about help from the centre - maybe they are looking at Darlington.

    2) The move towards opposition between forces. Urban Labour v Tories in the rest, for England. Unionist v Nat in Scotland. And an intensification of Leave v Remain. And a move towards a showdown between the big force where only one winner is possible: Sturgeon v Boris.

Hmm, great mindfs and so on.

Nope. Newport is the aspiration, but there are challenges in running alongside or track sharing with the steam railway, as well as actually extending the line somewhere near Newport, the old route now being covered by a large housing estate.

    Excellent news for BINFACE.

Candidates putting a BIN ON THEIR FACE, and getting serious traction makes me proud to be British.

Think how calmer America would be if they actually had a sense of humour?

You never heard our famous presidential hopefuls Will Rogers, Pat Paulsen and Kanye West?

    Great humorists all!
    Laughing *at* rather than with!
You are right (also correct) re: KW, but NOT Paulsen. And most certain NOT about Will Rogers. Whom I suspect you've never heard of?

Tanks are just the thing for a land-based power like, say, Germany or France but of limited use on an island with no empire left. I suppose if Scotland goes independent then declares war... but suppose Scotland is the country that inherits the tanks!

Just keep those island line railway extensions coming.

I'd vote for anyone who delivered on Newport/Ventnor.

    Anyone.
I was discussing the possible Ventnor extension just last week. We are keen to see it happen, but there are some technical issues as well as the minor issue of funding

    So. It's really Portugal.

    And Singapore.

    And that's it.
Singapore has hotel quarantine and just announced tightened domestic restrictions because of a small handful of cases, despite decent progress with vaccine. They are still in thrall to zero covid-ism.
Once you get to even 55+% of the population vaccinated (see Israel), then the virus finds it very hard to find new hosts.

Which makes panicking over a few dozen cases once you have half the population (or more) vaccinated seem rather unncecessary.

Almost no changes in Scotland and Wales from last time. Since both results were on a knife-edge last time, they're still on a knife-edge this time.

We’re expecting a feasibility study to go to Parliament from Ian Birch any day now. Once we see that - assuming it’s made public - we’ll have a better idea where things stand.

I imagine we need a couple of hundred to credibly deter action across the central European plain?

Of course, it requires Germany, Poland and France to do the same etc. or Russia might decide to dance in the Baltics.

Starmer needs new advisors.....see the 6pm news, Boris with his mini Trump blimp in Hartlepool saying up the people, cut to Starmer in his Westminster office saying well we need to engage with the public...

Obviously Boris visit is carefully handled PR stunt, but the leader of the working man's party banging on about having to engage with the public from London office looks as out of touch as Jacob Ress Mogg talking about single mothers on benefits.

Keir Starmer's reshuffle must be in doubt. There is a certain irony in his wanting to axe Dodds for not cutting through, given his own performance. Does Starmer have the party heft to take on the various wings of the party?

    Dead in the water.

I'm delighted to announce PB's JohnO has been re-elected.

    Excellent news.
Surrey is proving interesting - 30 Conservatives and 23 non-Conservatives elected so far.

Going into the election, the Conservatives held 61 of the 81 seats so the Conservative majority looks set to be substantially reduced.
If I was Dominic Raab I'd be looking for a new seat.
Raab's fine. He's improving too. I know it sounds insane, but I do think Boris is giving opportunity to his ministers to do stuff. Hancock for example seems very confident that he's calling the shots and Boris is with him. To the extent that this might be true it seems a good feature of the Boris regime.

Any hope of West Wight? (Happy memories of taking my host's hound down the line beside the Yar.)
Beautiful line, beautiful route, but the business case for that didn't even stack up in the 1890s sans cars.

Newport and Ventnor are major population centres that are currently 5-6 miles short of the network.

Cowes should really be on the table too, but the route has been built over like a MoFo and it can easily be served by bussing it to death, so probably not.

The Tory donor at the centre of the Downing Street refurbishment row was a trustee of a royal charity when it bought furniture for his home and paid £1 million to his property company, The Times can reveal https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/property-firm-owned-by-tory-donor-in-no11-flat-row-was-paid-1m-by-royal-charity-while-he-was-a-trustee-br6lhq5fh

Starmer needs to do two things with the sleaze allegations swirling round Number 10. First, he needs to nail Boris to the wall so that he must resign. More importantly though, he needs to get the message across to voters that the issue is corruption not wallpaper. The evidence of the yesterday's election results is that he has failed on the politics, even if he can eventually topple the Prime Minister.

The Times story is interesting but is paywalled. What can be seen looks like a loose, easy-come culture, even if there is nothing legally wrong.

There was also a suggestion a couple of days ago that Boris's brother Jo had landed a job with Dyson which if nothing else might explain how they knew each other's mobile numbers.

Stroppy Sir Keir wasn’t a great look. Nor as you say was standing in a room with some old books behind him, looking every bit the cloistered lawyer.

I do feel quite sorry for him. He’s an improvement on Corbyn, but ironically by being a safe pair of hands he’s not radical enough to institute the changes Labour need to make.

I think Labour actually would benefit from rolling the dice and choosing more of a maverick leader. Unfortunately last time they rolled the dice they ended up with just the wrong sort of maverick in Corbyn, and understandably that would put one off doing it again.

Khalid Mahmood has resigned from the Labour front bench saying that 'A London-based bourgeoisie, with the support of brigades of woke social media warriors, has effectively captured the party'

Sounds like this Labour MP has a firm grasp on the culture war that you keep telling us doesn't exist...
Khalid Mahmood basically saying Starmer Out.

If Labour don't get rid of SKS now they will have no chance to recover in time for GE2024

A Socialist leader with a united Party in Wales shows what is possible.

A shockingly poor leader in England also shows what happens to Labour when it abandons the people it is supposed to represent
I have supported the Labour Party throughout. If any of your crackpot Corbynistas get to become leader you lose people like me. However your defeats will be honourable and you can harp on about how bad Boris Johnson's fourth term is for the country. Happy days, eh?
    Nailed on under Starmer.

    Shockingly poor leader.
