14 points of Tories for Bailie to squeeze. Seems like a sure thing to me.
No wonder Grant Shapps didn't read out the full list of 12 countries on the quarantine-free travel 'green list' - it includes Australia and New Zealand, which aren't letting anyone in https://twitter.com/JasonGroves1/status/1390701826211725315
He did say that many weren't letting us in yet.
EU will be very difficult given the EuCo dogma about open borders, and the level of average COVID cases there running at a level we dropped below in *early-mid February* .
I think that Portugal is the interesting one on this list - what are they doing with their Spanish border?
I'd say the next places will be Malta if cases fall, and Canada who are vaccinating like gangbusters.
Think you will likely have to wait more than a wee while for the Canucks to give you a hearty Great White North welcome.

I'd be very surprised too, with her support (uniquely in SLAB) for the nuke missiles and subs.

Sounds like this Labour MP has a firm grasp on the culture war that you keep telling us doesn't exist...
A suggestion about the meaning of the votes so far: These votes enforce two trends
1) The move towards voting for power. Labour doing OK in Wales, SNP slightly on the up in Scotland, Tories doing better in most of England especially where they were already making progress.
In each case the immediate holder of the purse strings and power is consolidating.
Not only is identity politics being enforced, so is pork barrel. Eg in part Hartlepool is saying 'Me Too' about help from the centre - maybe they are looking at Darlington.
2) The move towards opposition between forces. Urban Labour v Tories in the rest, for England. Unionist v Nat in Scotland. And an intensification of Leave v Remain. And a move towards a showdown between the big force where only one winner is possible: Sturgeon v Boris.
Just had a text from a Labour party supporting friend of mine on the results. He's professional, successful, lovely guy and from Wales originally but he's very frustrated on the results saying, "Don't get me started. Gunboats and flags. Sickening."
I responded saying we'll send a couple into Cardiff Bay next flying the skull & crossbones to cheer him up.
It looks like Johnson is doing well in England, Drakeford in Wales, and Sturgeon in Scotland. I'm not sure I'm a fan of this lack of rebelliousness against national leaders.
I've rebelled like Wat Tyler.
If anyone tries taking my meat and fish I might do an actual Wat Tyler.

The count is held up because a batch of postal votes was put in the box for the wrong ward. Council is suggesting all 39 wards may need to be recounted, which to me (I am not actually there) seems an overreaction.

I think he means the Test Cricketer turned Bishop of Woolwich, Bishop of Liverpool 1975-1997 and then Labour Life Peer. Spelt Sheppard, though.

Did a lot wrt Protestant - Roman-Catholic relations in Liverpool alongside Archbishop Derek Worlock.

He was an England Captain for one test, then on the MCC committee.
Inspired by a previous Archbishop Trevor Huddleston speech, he went public with refusal to take part in an MCC tour to South Africa in 1960, which caused an explosion from Lord Bufton-Tufton (actually Lt Col RT Stanyforth).
Then he put motions to the MCC Committee in 1968 (Basil D'Oliveira controversy time) to boycott S.Africa, seconded by Mike Brearley who was 26 and being a little bold for a whipper-snapper.
They were defeated.
Which is establishment stuff at around the same time as Peter Hain etc were campaigning.
Keir Starmer's reshuffle must be in doubt. There is a certain irony in his wanting to axe Dodds for not cutting through, given his own performance. Does Starmer have the party heft to take on the various wings of the party?

Just keep those island line railway extensions coming.
I'd vote for anyone who delivered on Newport/Ventnor.
Is it really necessary for the news programmes to interrupt interviewees mid sentence to bring live declarations? I find it both rude and disruptive to the flow of the programme. If instead they showed the declaration on a delay 30 seconds later then it would not make any difference, and no-one would even notice.

Nope. Newport is the aspiration, but there are challenges in running alongside or track sharing with the steam railway, as well as actually extending the line somewhere near Newport, the old route now being covered by a large housing estate.
I have walked the old estuary line with the dog; it’s now a cracking walk.

(PS. yes, we've been dicks to each other in the past but let's ignore that: this is more important)
Tanks are just the thing for a land-based power like, say, Germany or France but of limited use on an island with no empire left. I suppose if Scotland goes independent then declares war... but suppose Scotland is the country that inherits the tanks!

Can you come up here and sort out our Metro system please? Bonus: less woke people.
Singapore has hotel quarantine and just announced tightened domestic restrictions because of a small handful of cases, despite decent progress with vaccine. They are still in thrall to zero covid-ism.
Once you get to even 55+% of the population vaccinated (see Israel), then the virus finds it very hard to find new hosts.
Which makes panicking over a few dozen cases once you have half the population (or more) vaccinated seem rather unncecessary.

We’re expecting a feasibility study to go to Parliament from Ian Birch any day now. Once we see that - assuming it’s made public - we’ll have a better idea where things stand.
Tanks are just the thing for a land-based power like, say, Germany or France but of limited use on an island with no empire left. I suppose if Scotland goes independent then declares war... but suppose Scotland is the country that inherits the tanks!
I imagine we need a couple of hundred to credibly deter action across the central European plain?
Of course, it requires Germany, Poland and France to do the same etc. or Russia might decide to dance in the Baltics.
Starmer needs new advisors.....see the 6pm news, Boris with his mini Trump blimp in Hartlepool saying up the people, cut to Starmer in his Westminster office saying well we need to engage with the public...

I'm delighted to announce PB's JohnO has been re-elected.
Excellent news.
Surrey is proving interesting - 30 Conservatives and 23 non-Conservatives elected so far.
Going into the election, the Conservatives held 61 of the 81 seats so the Conservative majority looks set to be substantially reduced.
If I was Dominic Raab I'd be looking for a new seat.
Raab's fine. He's improving too. I know it sounds insane, but I do think Boris is giving opportunity to his ministers to do stuff. Hancock for example seems very confident that he's calling the shots and Boris is with him. To the extent that this might be true it seems a good feature of the Boris regime.

Beautiful line, beautiful route, but the business case for that didn't even stack up in the 1890s sans cars.
Newport and Ventnor are major population centres that are currently 5-6 miles short of the network.
Cowes should really be on the table too, but the route has been built over like a MoFo and it can easily be served by bussing it to death, so probably not.
Kirsty to Tice: “you talk about Rome not being built in a day, but you are like the lost city of Atlantis...”
Pompey would be better example?
Portsmouth isn’t often compared to Rome. Even Venice is a stretch, despite Pompey being Britain’s only island city (handy to remember as that crops up in quizzes now and again)

Lozza Fox may have assisted Shaun Bailey in London by getting more people to preference him, Bailey, than would otherwise have been the case.
Lawrence Fox, it must surely be argued, is going to go on to become one of the foremost thinkers of the 21st Century. He's already in demand all over Europe, famous even in Russia.
The LibDems in Scotland have managed to repeat their Westminster trick of getting lots of tactical voting. It results in 5 seats with decent majorities, and then sub 2% shares almost everywhere else.

Even has his own news channel in the States. And does some half decent glacier mints.
Boris has had two Falklands moments: Brexit and COVID, and he even chased the French away with boats yesterday. Labour recently suffered their worst defeat since before they had the capacity to form majority government and have been squeezed out of the news ever since.
Starmer needs to do two things with the sleaze allegations swirling round Number 10. First, he needs to nail Boris to the wall so that he must resign. More importantly though, he needs to get the message across to voters that the issue is corruption not wallpaper. The evidence of the yesterday's election results is that he has failed on the politics, even if he can eventually topple the Prime Minister.
The Times story is interesting but is paywalled. What can be seen looks like a loose, easy-come culture, even if there is nothing legally wrong.
There was also a suggestion a couple of days ago that Boris's brother Jo had landed a job with Dyson which if nothing else might explain how they knew each other's mobile numbers.

I do feel quite sorry for him. He’s an improvement on Corbyn, but ironically by being a safe pair of hands he’s not radical enough to institute the changes Labour need to make.
I think Labour actually would benefit from rolling the dice and choosing more of a maverick leader. Unfortunately last time they rolled the dice they ended up with just the wrong sort of maverick in Corbyn, and understandably that would put one off doing it again.

God, that would be HILARIOUS.
She is out of parliament so it is moot but at least Pidcock gives the impression when speaking that she might be about to say something interesting, whether or not you agree with her. Starmer has not mastered the art of story-telling.
