    Rotten parties that have held a council for a long time are full of schisms. They could easily splinter.

    Can I just ask this one question, what was the Labour party thinking when they selected a former MP as the candidate in Hartlepool who had voted against Brexit I think 46 times (according to Skynews) in votes at Westminster during his brief tenure there in a constituency that was uber Brexit?

    I assume Labour are smashing it everywhere thanks to Keir Starmers strategy of attacking the left to attract right votes.

    I guess I have to be the bigger man at this point and concede that I was wrong about the electoral pay off of Starmers strategy. Also I have made constant remarks about him being less electable than Jeremy Corbyn....

    Well, egg on my face.

    To be serious for a moment, all thoroughly deserved and predictable.

    Edit: Also this might be why Tories like Topping likes Starmer whilst left wingers don't.

    RochdaleLabour on this site was asking the same thing at the time of the selection.

    Dr Paul Wiliams is Keir Starmer's friend. He wanted him back in Parliament.

    People are voting Conservative because what they really want is a more left wing Labour party......

    They kept changing it. It was 50% to begin with, and then 58% later on.

    People are voting Conservative because what they really want is a more left wing Labour party......
    People aren't voting Labour because Labour is offering them nothing, people who had been voting Labour under Corbyn and other Labour leaders.

    I realise Tories are desperate to keep the golden goose in place but Labour are losing votes everywhere not just Tories, Starmer is electorally useless.

    Just wow, in all the years I have followed election night counts, that is the kind of results I never expected to see in somewhere like Sunderland. And I say that as someone who while being poles apart politically, then became a big fan of former Labour MP for Sunderland South Chris Mullin's diaries.

    He also wrote "A Very British Coup" which was turned into a TV series IIRC.

    To be fair, we're seeing Cons hoovering up the UKIP/BXP vote everywhere, which would be consistent with a victory of that margin in Hartlepool.
    Less than 10% seats my way had UKIP last time, interesting to see trends in areas without them.
