People saying "no earlier than" 17 May, or "hopefully" 17 May, or anything along those lines at this stage is the same sort of polite fiction as telling children that "hopefully" they'll be on the nice list at Christmas.

Whilst I'm not predicting that SKS is going anywhere soon, long shots to replace Starmer one day assuming Labour want the best chance to win a GE which involves getting red wall back:

    - Male (just saying)
    - Northern
    - Charisma
    - Can you close your eyes and imagine him at door of No 10?
    - Intelligent enough
    - Voted Leave (or at least clearly expressed support for honouring the result)
    - Patriotic enough
    - Not regarded as a strong left winger

Hmm. John Mann or Dan Jarvis. The former is (sadly) no longer an MP and Jarvis is available at 50/1.

    Starmer:

    - Male (slightly effete)
    - Southern (very London)
    - No charisma
    - Yes, he could do the job well (not the politics - he'd be like a Labour Theresa May)
    - Remainer (big time.. let's be honest)
    - Patriotic? A tad - at heart he thinks we should be past that now
    - Moderately left-wing

Conclusion? He'll get a few extra seats. He'll expunge the far-left. But he won't win.
Tend to agree, with one caveat.

If the government continues to muck things up the way they did in 2020, they'll lose, and Starmer will become PM because he's inoffensive and for want of any alternative.

And with this PM and this cabinet, that can't be ruled out.
I doubt that will happen as the Tories won’t let it. Johnson will be out if he becomes an electoral liability.
People can fool themselves, and a liability might only become inarguable after an election.

Do you get this antagonised by the American right's anti science stances?

You know the Covid denying and evolution denying beliefs.
No, because the mad American creationist right is not winning the culture war. The mad identitarian American Left IS, and, what’s more, they are exporting their poisonous lunacy across the West. Including the UK. So it matters

American education is just the first great temple to fall

My son is the last year of a public elementary school in Los Angeles. We have seen literally zero indication of any of this.

    Zero.

There has been a course on slavery in the US (a bad thing), but that's it.

    My daughter is 13.

She has not been taught about "white privilege" or anything similar. I mean they could be saving it for when they're a bit older. But I suspect that there is no big woke reveal.

Indeed, the only thing even vaguely "woke" about their schools is that one has a single transgender toilet, which is apparently the place you go to vape and not be discovered.

I think a lot of the stories on Twitter are simply untrue, or at the least grossly exaggerated.

Look at how worked up you become - these stories are clickbait and share magnets that end up reinforcing this idea that your culture is under attack. When, in fact, kids education is basically the same as it ever was.
No, they’re true. The evidence is overwhelming

And you know what, people won't send their kids to that PRIVATE school.

So the private school will change their curriculum, because otherwise the money will cease coming in.
You veer all over the place like a shopping trolley on this.

I've seen you (lucidly) critique white privilege, racial identity, "defund the police" Woke language and terminology, and call them nuts. I've also seen you say it's grossly exaggerated and all made up/fabricated, and suggested we're nuts.

Conclusion: you see evidence on both sides of the equation and haven't quite made up your mind on what you think about it yet.
I loathe woke, and I am massively hostile to critical race theory and the like. I think Universities should be actively shutting down departments that promote that kind of psuedoscientific hate.

But I don't see it as an existential threat to the West. Like "blackboard" and political correctness in the UK in the 1980s, there is a huge amount of exaggeration. People share things that alarm them. And the more alarming they are, the more likely they are to be shared.
Bewilderingly dim. It’s not random crazy uni departments that ‘need shutting down’. The crazy folk have already won. They’ve taken OVER the universities

‘Sorry, Professor, We’re Cutting You Off
Funding higher education now means subsidizing the political activists who have hijacked it.

Higher education had a cluster of related purposes in society. Everyone benefited from the new knowledge it developed and the well-informed, thoughtful citizenry it produced. Individual students benefited from the preparation they received for careers in a developed economy. Yet these days, academia has decided that its primary purpose is the promotion of a radical political ideology, to which it gives the sunny label “social justice.”’

What is Happening maybe overblown by the right wing press and maybe click bait. but there is still A trend there that is seeing people losing jobs and opportunities for not adhering to certain dogma. James Dreyfus has lost work too simply based in a letter he signed six years ago. Richard Dawkins has been stripped of his humanist of the year award from the nineties for views he recently expressed. It is happening more and more and Will only continue because the people, with power and influence are not the politicians.

According to their own polling return they have kept only 40% of 2019 voters...

It's a 2.5% swing from the Tories to Labour since 2016 which makes sense.

Why are 67 million still under restrictions when one person died of covid yesterday?

We don't want to end up reimporting the vaccine.

    You mean the virus?

Currently the municipal map of the Mardid results shows 1 red with most of the rest blue apart frm the undeclared. An interesting contrast to London on Thursday!

So, will the victorious PP go into coalition with VOX to ensure a majority or will they govern on their own as a minority safe in the knowledge the other parties will never get together? PP seem to have scooped up Citizens votes and seats to build their strong performance.

It's also worth mentioning PP's performance in Madrid last time was their worst historically in a city in which they have usually done very well - they governed as a majority after the 2007 and 2011 elections so tonight is, in a sense, a return to how the politics of Madrid were 15-20 years ago and previously.

It's a city where PP has done well even when struggling in other areas of Spain so perhaps not quite as revolutionary as some on here are suggesting.
When the national governing party is struggling to stay in second place in the country's capital I think it is a big deal. Madrid is back to being a PP stronghold and with Barcelona effectively run by nationalists and the PP also in charge in Andalucia I think the PSOE are in real potential difficulties.

    Answer:

‘Really really well, we’ve now got 5 women and just 2 men, but we can do even better’

And no one batted an eyelid

The problem of increasingly polarised preoccupations of identity in Anglo-American society is on both the left and right. Trumpism and Brexitism is its mirror image.

On this, you’re an idiot. Sorry
Of course there is a lot more to it.

What is Happening maybe overblown by the right wing press and maybe click bait. but there is still A trend there that is seeing people losing jobs and opportunities for not adhering to certain dogma. Especially in further education and the performing arts. I noticed Mary Beard was being attacked on Twitter not for the views she holds but for following ‘TERFS’ on Twitter. James Dreyfus has lost work too simply based in a letter he signed six years ago. Richard Dawkins has been stripped of his humanist of the year award from the nineties for views he recently expressed. It is happening more and more and Will only continue because the people, with power and influence are not the politicians.
I know for a fact I've been held back from being a reviewer and mentor in my job because I'm a male.

    The HR director told me.

The basis of the argument was they have a 50:50 split they've achieved (contrived) and because a female resigned from the firm another has to take the spot, and did - who joined 9 months ago.

    I asked five years ago.
I recall an apparently true story from the BBC. The diversity unit was discussing the make-up of various BBC boards and someone asked ‘so, Jenny, how is the Religious Affairs board doing in terms of equality and diversity?’

    Answer:

‘Really really well, we’ve now got 5 women and just 2 men, but we can do even better’

And no one batted an eyelid
And everyone ignores the biggest elephant in the room, which is class inequality. Assuming the story is true, the folks at the BBC would be perfectly happy if the five daughters of the Duke of Westminster got the job (if he had 5) over males from working class backgrounds because, you know, it's progress.

One of the Durham Council Tory candidates, on a Facebook group I’m a member of, is saying their internal polling suggests labour will hold the council and possibly gain seats due to the high number of independents splitting the vote. Maybe expectation management. Make of it what you will.

The problem with the current media in general is their inability to call out politicians who blatantly lie . Johnson in the space of 1 minute lied three times and was allowed to get away with it with no comeback .

I really really can't compute that YouGov poll showing a late swing to Shaun Bailey.

Me neither, though no one wants to vote for Sadiq and the anti vote might just be consolidating around the nearest challenger. Sadiq is obviously still going to win on Thursday.

It's possible Starmer could win, but that'd be on the basis of knocking the Tories down to 300 seats and forming a rainbow coalition to take over.

I don't think he could beat that.
That's probably right. If Scotland decides to vote overwhelmingly SNP, it's not as easy for the Conservatives to assemble a majority (1992 and 2017 both depended on Scottish Conservative MPs), but it's damn near impossible for Labour.
Also, I don't think there's enough Tory fruit for Starmer to pick in England.

There's only so many upper-middle class, metropolitan and student/graduate seats.
Doesn't Labour pretty much have them all?

    Extraordinary - if correct!
So what, personal preference aside, do we make of the simultaneous narrowing of the national polls (leads of 5, 1, 1, 2) and the dramatic improvement for the Tories in all of Hartlepool, London and WM? It seems unlikely that either set of polls are all wrong. So:

    1. The Tories have suddenly become really good at campaigning? Where they're paying attention, they rocket upwards, but it doesn't affect the rest of the country?
    2. Labour is doing wonderfully somewhere else. Scotland? Wales?
    3. What?

It's also a poll that shows 10% voting for Siân Berry, the Green candidate. She;s a longtime figure in London politics but Khan would probably poll higher if the race were more competitive.

"Paul Rossi, a math teacher at Grace Church School in New York City who 'was relieved of his teaching duties' after he blew the whistle on the private school's critical race theory-based curriculum."
    via @theblaze

Check the audio. The head admits they are ‘demonising white kids’. Admits it

    https://twitter.com/freethepeople/status/1388576456196820993?s=21

Something has gone wrong with a section of Western upper middle class folk, who seem eaten up with hate for their own societies.
Orwell identified this trait in posh English people many decades ago. They’d rather fart the Greek alphabet at the Queen than sing the National Anthem

However this self hatred has now crossed the Atlantic, interbred with the toxic guilt-ridden legacy of slavery, and infested much of intellectual America, from academia to Hollywood. And now America re-exports it around the world, like the Brits in the 60s giving the Blues back to the States

China fuels it all via social media, because China benefits from rampant western decline
Orwell was a brilliant novelist, but his social criticism tends to the shallow, glib and gigantically overrated, mainly because it's always been convenient for the anti-metropolitan right. His hatred of the "self-hating English intelligentsia" was par for the course for a very long line of English public schoolboys trying to demonstrate their more authentic and gritty credentials.

Scotland? Wales?
    3. What?

The London polls still show a swing to Khan in the Mayoralty and Labour in the Assembly since 2016.

Labour and the LDs are making progress in the South and the Tories are doing better in Wales, the Midlands and Leave voting areas of the North

Wycombe, Reading, Crawley, Worthing, Peterborough, Stevenage..

On a very good day places like that.

Well yes, any attempt to define privilege as somehow being exclusively defined by a fairly narrow set of genes is clearly bonkers.

It's also contradictory to say that parts 1,223,600 to 1,245,233 of your genetic code are immovable and somehow bring with them you being part of some shared history and culture... while this bit of your genetic code which determines if you have a penis or a womb is completely in your control to change.

I always use President Obama's children as my example. Does anyone really think Malia Obama is less privileged than the average (white) inhabitant of Marion County, West Virginia*.

    * Average household income around £8,000/year.

    I absolutely condemn it.

But - in Los Angeles public schools - it is invisible.

Which makes me think (perhaps wrongly) that's it's probably exaggerated.

I wonder how many votes Labour is gaining in southern England.

Its little noticed how much support Labour gained in safe Conservative areas in 2017 before losing it again in 2019.

Now if the loss in 2019 was because of Corbyn or Brexit then the removal of the issues should see Labour able to regain those votes.

Especially so if the impetus is from student debt or housing unaffordability - the numbers affected by each growing year by year.

Possibly places where they already weigh the labour vote like london
    And yet Khan is down.
My money's on the Home Counties.
I agree. Starmer’s picking up votes in blue-remainia, isn’t he?

Labour could put in a surprisingly good performance in Chesham & Amersham.
I actually doubt your last point and wrt the Home counties not sure they would win much in a GE here - potential to make the Tory vote even more efficient.
Well indeed. Analogous to Tyne and Wear. Massive swings to the Tories all this century has left 12 out of 12 Labour seats much more efficiently won.
I do think my home town seat of Sunderland central could go blue for the first time since 1963!
I'm not convinced. Sunderland Central is a university seat after all and is being gentrified, albeit slowly (believe it or not). It also contains the more middle class metropolitan liberal elite parts of Sunderland.

Plus Sunderland/Tyne and Wear generally hasn't exactly been given a ton of Tory red meat to chew on like Teesside.

The council elections on Thursday should be informative.
    Gentrified??? Metropolitan liberal elite???

You'll have to let me know where to find the artisan bakers and organic cyclist cafes in Sunderland city centre...
"Metropolitan liberal elite" is relative, of course. ;)
It's a state of mind, not geography.

Same with being a man of the people (gender and/or actualy connection with 'the people' not required)
Some of us are metropolitan liberal elite and a man of the people.
    No doubt. Who?
    Me.

Well I was recently upgraded to upper class by some friends (they were doing a quiz and it asked them how many upper class people they knew, for this you didn't need a title for to be upper class.)
The test is whether you’d see a home of John Lewis decor and furnishings as a nightmare?
I loathe modern furniture ... sofas with no proper backs, uncomfortable chairs etc I always buy old and stylish and refurbish if required.

    Private polling klaxon.

Labour set for huge election defeat in Hartlepool, internal polling suggests

Exclusive: Party’s own figures show only 40% of previous supporters pledge to back its candidate this time

Fewer than half of recent Labour voters in Hartlepool say they will back the party in Thursday’s crucial byelection, according to internal data based on the canvassing of more than 10,000 people, leading activists to fear an historic Conservative victory.

Labour insiders said that polling from its ground campaign in the town showed that only about 40% of the party’s previous supporters had pledged to vote for its candidate, Paul Williams.

Such an outcome would deal a significant blow to Keir Starmer’s leadership and a decisive Conservative win in a north-east England seat that has elected a Labour MP at every parliamentary election since 1964.

Labour sources said they were in “huge trouble” in Hartlepool and also in danger of losing control of Sunderland and Durham councils for the first time in half a century. Voters across England, Scotland and Wales will go to the polls on what has been dubbed “Super Thursday”, in the biggest set of local elections since 1973.

Look at how worked up you become - these stories are clickbait and share magnets that end up reinforcing this idea that your culture is under attack. When, in fact, kids education is basically the same as it ever was.
No, they’re true. The evidence is overwhelming

"Paul Rossi, a math teacher at Grace Church School in New York City who 'was relieved of his teaching duties' after he blew the whistle on the private school's critical race theory-based curriculum."
    via @theblaze

Check the audio. The head admits they are ‘demonising white kids’. Admits it

    https://twitter.com/freethepeople/status/1388576456196820993?s=21

Though on current projections it is India which is the biggest threat to China, overtaking China in terms of population within a few decades and then maybe on economic strength in due course too
India will overtake China by population in the next few years, I believe
It may have already done so, they were practically tied in 2019, and China is forecasting a decline in absolute population this year.

I believe the Right's creationism stuff is wrong.

Will you condemn what is happening on the woke side in return?
    I absolutely condemn it.

But - in Los Angeles public schools - it is invisible.

Which makes me think (perhaps wrongly) that's it's probably exaggerated.
The evidence is in. You’re wrong. Here’s a school in LA, private for sure, but I can give you plentiful proof this affects US state schools as well. The posh ones are just more newsworthy

‘In the year since Floyd’s murder, the atmosphere at this bucolic, super-exclusive, $38,000- to $45,000-a-year private LA school has only grown more poisonous, with some Brentwood alumni of color not only hurling accusations of racism but also demanding that the school completely scrap what they see as a biased curriculum. Meanwhile, parents, teachers, and administrators spent much of last summer and fall wrestling over the value of books like To Kill a Mockingbird—a civil rights classic to some; an outdated, problematic text to others—in what’s shaping up to be an epic battle over the hearts and minds of the children of America’s one percent.

To be sure, scenes like this are not occurring only at Brentwood. Similar skirmishes are breaking out at elite prep schools all over—at Harvard-Westlake, Marlborough, and Archer School for Girls in L.A. and in New York at Chapin and Dalton—making headlines across the country in publications as ideologically divergent as the New York Post and The Atlantic. But it’s worth focusing on what’s going on at this particular school off West Sunset. Because it’s here at Brentwood that all the forces arrayed in this conflict—woke alumni who want to tear the system down; teachers who’ve had a hard enough time getting through the year on Zoom, let alone dealing with paradigm shifts in educational priorities; and angry, frustrated moms and dads who just want their kids to get into good colleges—are most dramatically and publicly clashing, like those stranded boys battling each other on a deserted island in Lord of the Flies, one of the novels Brentwood struck from reading lists last year.’

    * Average household income around £8,000/year.
any attempt to define privilege as somehow being exclusively defined by a fairly narrow set of genes is clearly bonkers

I think its more likely to be self-serving than bonkers.

There's plenty of upper-middle class women who benefit from gender being deemed more important than class in the privilege stakes.

Scotland? Wales?
    3. What?

It is a mystery - one possibility is that the national polls reflect public exasperation about Boris and money but this isn't going to show up in real votes. Another could be Labour piling up lots more votes where they aren't needed or alternativley denting the Tory leads in the southern shires. Most likley a combo of all3 and some others!
There's also differential turnout to consider. Perhaps a large chunk would vote Lab in a GE but can't be bothered with the locals.

I would be interested to hear from any canvassers, how they think turnout will bear up compared to normal local elections.
The reprt from the Guardian posted earlier suggested in the mayorals, Hartlepool and some north-east councils the Labour people were in despair.

Especially so if the impetus is from student debt or housing unaffordability - the numbers affected by each growing year by year.

Survation at the weekend indeed had the Tories lead in the South down to just 7%, 42% to 35% for Labour with the LDs up to 13%.

By contrast the best region for the Tories was the Midlands where the Tories led by 52% to 38% for Labour.

In London Labour had a big lead of 22%, on 49% to 27% for the Tories

I cannot believe this given the narrowing in the polls recently. It just beggars belief, if true.

Scotland? Wales?

Their mood not helped by many of them being laid off by Labour on Friday.

I live in Maidenhead, which has previously been a white town with a fairly small Muslim community (one mosque).

In the last year I have definitely noticed a few more black families moving in (presumably from London).

We have heard a lot of reports about the population of London dropping but less about where people are relocating to.

I can see a scenario where Maidenhead becomes more competitive in the next 10-20 years

    1) The Borough are putting all the housing development in Maidenhead with huge numbers of flats (probably quite a lot of them rented)
    2) Due to population growth the seat will gradually become more tightly drawn around the town and lose the Thames-side villages

This is in a similar bracket of concern to Trump saying white supermacists included some "very fine people", or Johnson describing changes to the Brexit bill as the "surrender bill". There is a potentially very damaging problem of ethnocultural ultra-polarisation taking place.

Of 3,142 counties in the United States in 2013, McDowell County ranked 3,142 in the life expectancy of both male and female residents.

In 2015, McDowell County had the highest rate of drug-induced deaths of any county in the United States, with 141 deaths per 100,000 people.

The county has been classified as a "food desert" by the USDA. In 2017, there were two full-sized grocery stores serving the county's 535 square miles.[28] The county's only Walmart Supercenter, the county's largest employer, closed in 2016.[29]

Financial services remain scant in the area. In 1999, The First National Bank of Keystone, the only bank then located in the coal town of Keystone and the town's major employer at the time, was closed by the FDIC due to fraud.

    McDowell's population has fallen from 98k in 1950 to 17k in 2019.

I sourced from here (https://www.onlyinyourstate.com/west-virginia/poorest-counties-wv/) but may be out of date.
We drive through Marion Co with the horse trailer each time we go to an event in Lexington KY. There are certain trucker gas stations where my wife won't stop.

The national polling has very little relevance to local elections.

Hartlepool - IF CON win then it is down to local factors, I am still calling a marginal LAB hold.

London - everyone hates CON there. I am considering asking for a benefit as the last CON supporter there. Sadiq is massive. LAB possibly 11/14 of the constituency seats.

West Midlands - looks like Street is safe

Scotland - no one likes CON, LAB coming back well

Wales - better for Drakeford than expected

England local elections - CON on a high 2016, 2017 - LAB looking to come back, might not happen

    Don’t send your kids there

‘Brentwood alerted parents that at least one day of school would be starting late so that faculty could spend a morning discussing chapters of White Fragility.’

This is in a similar bracket of concern to Trump saying neo-nazis included some "very fine people", or Johnson describing changes to the Brexit bill as the "surrender bill". There is a very pressing problem of ethnocultural ultra-polarisation.
Yes there is and both of the polarised sides are as bad as each other but both are convinced of their own virtue above all else. It’s only going to get worse.

"Paul Rossi, a math teacher at Grace Church School in New York City who 'was relieved of his teaching duties' after he blew the whistle on the private school's critical race theory-based curriculum."

Check the audio. The head admits they are ‘demonising white kids’. Admits it

And you know what, people won't send their kids to that PRIVATE school.

So the private school will change their curriculum, because otherwise the money will cease coming in.

Mmm, the populist right are absolutely teeming with plans to restribute wealth and power away from financial and social elites and in favour of the working class.

That's why they're always banging on about the evils of woke and the joys of strong borders and making their countries great again. You know, just like they used to be in those halcyon far off days of unwoke when workers ruled the roost.

It's all about reducing class inequalities. It's what keeps those guys awake at nights. The Trumps. The Farages. The ERG.

PB is at its most dull when posters from right and left proactively dig out extreme (yet atypical) examples of wokeism and prejudice. It adds zero value: Internet Rule 54 states the possibly of some organisation or individual somewhere behaving stupidly at any given time is precisely 1 in 1.

This is correct ; the modern left spends identity preoccupations of varying usefulness, some of which mirror the right, and genuine social concern. Boris Johnson's and Farage's class concern is not genuine.

What’s on Earth is ‘white fragility’ ?
    A best selling book.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Fragility

The concept is that white people are used to their position at the top of the social hierarchy, and feel threatened by social equality measures challenging their status.

You may have seen some examples on here tonight. Male fragility and class fragility are similar.

It's a very poor, even totalitarian concept, I would say. As mentioned previously, it reminds me of very literal-minded, clumsy and official interpretations of Marx in Eastern Bloc regimes.

Scotland? Wales?
    3. What?

I wonder how many votes Labour is gaining in southern England.

Its little noticed how much support Labour gained in safe Conservative areas in 2017 before losing it again in 2019.

Now if the loss in 2019 was because of Corbyn or Brexit then the removal of the issues should see Labour able to regain those votes.

Especially so if the impetus is from student debt or housing unaffordability - the numbers affected by each growing year by year.
Survation at the weekend indeed had the Tories lead in the South down to just 7%, 42% to 35% for Labour with the LDs up to 13%.

By contrast the best region for the Tories was the Midlands where the Tories led by 52% to 38% for Labour.

In London Labour had a big lead of 22%, on 49% to 27% for the Tories

    https://cdn.survation.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/30202446/Survation-Daily-Mail-Politics-Poll-Tables.xlsx

Very astute point. 2) will be revealed by the boundary review. Watford, Hastings (possibly without Rye), MK and the like become competitive. A fair few more have majorities cut.
    That is even before 1).

    Nick

The national polling has very little relevance to local elections.

Hartlepool - IF CON win then it is down to local factors, I am still calling a marginal LAB hold.

London - everyone hates CON there. I am considering asking for a benefit as the last CON supporter there. Sadiq is massive. LAB possibly 11/14 of the constituency seats.

West Midlands - looks like Street is safe

Scotland - no one likes CON, LAB coming back well

Wales - better for Drakeford than expected

England local elections - CON on a high 2016, 2017 - LAB looking to come back, might not happen
Are you availing yourself of some of the 6/1 for the Labour hold then?
    No - I don't do betting!

Yes, perhaps. In my neck of Surrey Labour has been putting up a serious effort over the last two years (my turning up may have helped), gaining our first borough councillors since 2002 and I suspect getting 15-20% in our main target ward this year. That's irrelevant in Parliamentary terms, but of course there are places like Reading and Portsmouth which are seeing the same sort of shift over time.

Very astute point. 2) will be revealed by the boundary review. Watford, Hastings (possibly without Rye), MK and the like become competitive. A fair few more have majorities cut.
    That is even before 1).
Hastings has long been competitive tbf. But your general point is a good one.

    Thanks for the info.

Just realised Wokeness is great for Eng Lit students.

Faced with a boring old book you HAVE to read? Dickens? Melville? Tolstoy? Just get it canceled because it’s ‘problematic’. Eventually you can whittle the curriculum down to ‘White Fragility’ and some exciting Latinx graffiti in East LA

What’s on Earth is ‘white fragility’ ?
It's a term for white people who cannot discuss the concept of white privilege without having an emotional and intellectual meltdown.

This forum is awash with it. You don't even need to be paying attention to see this.
I don't think it's a useful concept at all, and I speak as someone who even has less problem with concepts like White Privilege. It's a kind of lazy ideological literalism that in its general emotional characterisation is also even racist, I would say.

Let the culture warriors form a homeland on the Isle of Man where they can luxuriate in their differences and enjoy mutual opprobrium for ever more. The rest of us can just get on with our lives.
    That’s what Twitter exists for.
    Too noisy for everyone else.

Final YouGov poll for the London Mayoral election has a large swing to,the Tory candidate.

I cannot believe this given the narrowing in the polls recently. It just beggars belief, if true.

Scotland? Wales?
    3. What?

I wonder how many votes Labour is gaining in southern England.

Its little noticed how much support Labour gained in safe Conservative areas in 2017 before losing it again in 2019.

    It certainly does happen.

But the opposite can and does too - namely an urban centre becomes too big to be one constituency and is split in half with each half getting rural areas added to make up the numbers.

‘The nation’s reckoning over race has reached thousands of U.S. schools, and so, too, has a conservative backlash.

Schools across the country are working to address systemic racism and inject an anti-racist mind-set into campus life. But where advocates see racial progress, opponents see an effort to shame White teachers and sometimes students for being part of an oppressive system.’

    See that?

    ‘Thousands of US schools’.

Hear that? It’s the unusual sound of a PB debate: ending.
