    Oops!

Poor Boris. Good luck to him against the virus...
  • Boris Johnson was moved into intensive care at 7pm this evening after his condition worsened over the course of this afternoon

The PM asked Dominic Raab to deputise for him before he moved

He remains conscious but has been removed to intensive care in case he needs a ventilator

For the sake of his family, his partner, their unborn child and his friends that he beats this.

My thoughts are certainly with him - and them.

Horrible news about the PM. I may be misremembering here (and very much hope that I am), but intensive care survival rates have been reported to be relatively low, haven't they?

I suspect Boris may have been moved their slightly earlier than other patients would have been.

From my time visiting ICU I wouldn't want to be await while laying there.

Would they really have moved him to an ICU unit, at this time, just on the off chance?

The only reason might be I suppose that they can’t just wheel him across, there would need to be checks and then a security cordon put up.

With hindsight it’s astonishing he wasn’t being more closely monitored from the start (assuming he wasn’t). People in certain positions really should have access to higher quality care.

    Evening all :)

First, I wish Boris well and hope he makes a full recovery. He's not my taste politically but that matters not a jot.

As an aside, my brother was first diagnosed with coronavirus three weeks ago. His symptoms have been mild but even so he has periodic (every 2-3 days) spikes in temperature necessitating paracetamol. This makes me think the virus hangs around much longer than perhaps first realised and throws another variable into the question of easing the current restrictions.

The news Austria and Germany (and others) are looking at a post-Easter easing of restrictions is all well and good but there must be a risk of a renewed spike in cases as has been seen in Singapore.

The balance between the economic imperative and the public health reality is going to be very difficult to walk for any Government.

He only transferred at 1900, it is a bit early to be fully ventilated just a little over an hour later, unless he had done something precipitate like respiratory arrest.

Raab was a strange choice. Gove was the obvious deputy.
  • It's awful on a personal level for his family. It's also awful for us as a nation - he is/was in charge albeit not of an especially positive situation, and are we risk ending up with Raab in charge of a failing plan as the machinery of government is stricken with grief.

I do think going forward we need a much clearer line of responsibility. I well remember back in 2010 the uproar in Conservative circles at the notion Nick Clegg might be running the show when Cameron went on holiday.

There have been times when the post of Deputy PM has been left vacant and that's fine as long as everyone knows who will be in charge if the PM is incapacitated for whatever reason even if for a few hours for routine surgery for example.

Without wishing to be too obvious moving to ICU is really fucking serious. When they say things like conscious but difficulty breathing they don't mean a bit raspy, they means things like Lung capacity down to two thirds of a single lung and dropping.

If he gets ventilated, it may be circulatory and renal support he needs as well as oxygen. Anti-inflammatories and control of clotting too.

Though there is some evidence that early ventilation face down (prone) improves outcomes, if becoming significantly hypoxic.

From what Rigby said he's taken over responsibility for day-to-day running of government. Might not have full powers of PM, but it's very close.

    Let's hope he recovers.

In the meantime, there are legitimate questions around

    1. the Number 10 press handling of this. Did they lie to us all day?
    2. the constitutional position occupied by Raab. He can chair a meeting, but can he command the armed forces, for example?

Actually, I’m not sure I do. Yes, this is very tragic for the PM, as it is for the many thousands of others in this situation. And for his family, and their families. And I hope he gets through it, as I would like all of them to come through it.

But the thought of the Cabinet being left to their own devices under Raab, of all people, is much scarier. They have not shown judgement or restraint in this crisis, and it’s easy to imagine them fighting like ferrets in a sack over position and policy just at the moment we need them to pull together. Much though I dislike and distrust Johnson, his prestige was a bulwark again that. There was no doubt he was in charge and unassailable.

Some of the governmental implications - for all of us - are horrible. For a start, it makes the risk of full lockdown and/or social disorder much higher.

Isn't he basically 50:50 now according to @Foxy matrix based off of his BMI, age, gender ?

Hopefully they are being ultra cautious and the general stats don’t apply to him.
I hope not too bit it's clearly not good.

    Let's hope he recovers.

In the meantime, there are legitimate questions around

    1. the Number 10 press handling of this. Did they lie to us all day?
    2. the constitutional position occupied by Raab. He can chair a meeting, but can he command the armed forces, for example?

    Bore off.

Even oxygen can have a remarkable effect sometimes. Wishing Boris an astonishingly quick turnaround and an improved situation tomorrow.

It's awful on a personal level for his family. It's also awful for us as a nation - he is/was in charge albeit not of an especially positive situation, and are we risk ending up with Raab in charge of a failing plan as the machinery of government is stricken with grief.

To be fair Rochdale, Raab running the show is the least of our concerns.
It’s a considerable one for me.

I think you know to what I was alluding.

You just have to hope cometh the hour, cometh the man for Raab.

It becomes more chilling doesn't it? Really hoping he pulls through.

I genuinely feel quite sick upon hearing this news. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Boris.

And I hope Carole “in hiding” Cadwalladr doesn’t sleep a wink tonight

Where are the "it's just like the flu" mob now?
I don’t think many believe the lies from the Chinese government anymore.
I don't recall anything like that being uttered by the Chinese Gov. I'm not their biggest fan, but any chance you can pipe down about them for a bit? Cheers.

Never been a Bogsy fan, but I am afraid this could be bad news for the body politik. The country, finding itself in the worst crisis for 80 years, does not need the over-inflated egos of second rate Tory ministers pushing and shoving to get to the top of the queue in the succession stakes while their party leader is ill.
If it ever did come to it (and I hope it doesn't) then Jeremy Hunt should go in immediately as the MP's second choice.
It will also be a terrible thing for his girlfriend with her unborn child at this time

The truth is, they’re all pretty rubbish. Wallace, maybe.
