    FPT

Virtually certain to be a BIG spike in COVID-19 infections, hospitalizations & deaths in USA this weekend.

Why? Because Saturday is July 4th - Independence Day.

Traditionally the holiday is celebrated from sea to shining sea with fireworks and fire crackers, leading to numerous injuries and a few deaths. THIS year, this body count will be down, but the Creeping Crud will more than make up for the difference.

BTW when yours truly thinks about 4th of July, always remember the great scene from "The Great Escape" when trio of American POWs hosted (if that's the word) an epic Independence Day celebration for the mass of British POWs in Stalag Luft III. This scene was based on a true incident, as described in Paul Brickhill's classic book. At first the German guards thought a riot had broken out - then they realized it was one hell of an Anglo-American party, a real red-white-and-blue hooohaaa and brain fry.

SO this Independence Day, will be thanking you UKers - we couldn't have done it without you

Smart questioning from AleX Forsyth. She is head and shoulders more measured than any other BBC staffers questioning Johnson over the pandemic at these pressers. That said, he didn't answer the questions or give her a right to reply.

That list is like choosing between children!

Lewis Hamilton winning the championship at the last corner in 2008 and Liverpool winning the CL on penalties in 2005 stand out, the 2005 Ashes the runner up, but Jonny Wilkinson Drops for World Cup Glory, at 10am in the pub after about eight pints has to be the winner.

The one that’s not there, the 2012 Olympics as an event, especially that middle Saturday. It set out to inspire a generation and massively overachieved.

    Also FPT

Will Trumpsky quit? Personally think answer is NO.

However, it is true that he's cut and run out of just about EVERYBODY that's trusted him with their money, malt or maidservant.

Just ask Ivana & Marla & residents of Atlantic City & hordes of less-than-satisfied investors & business partners.

SO cannot be ruled out. Except that his all-consuming hubris will make him believe he can rekindle the magic and fool the American people one more time.

FCO says you can return from Singapore without quarantine. Very different, but good news for British expats stuck there or transiting from Australia.
You can't leave Australia any more, the last repatriation flight was about a month ago.
Multiple airlines (Qatar, Etihad, SQ for example) are flying from Sydney.
    https://www.smartraveller.gov.au/

"There’s a ban on overseas travel from Australia. You can’t leave Australia unless you get an exemption from the Department of Home Affairs."

I don't think the ten or so international flights a day from Sydney are for regular travellers.
The planes leaving are mostly 777s full of cargo, some of which have a handful of pax who are happy leaving the country indefinitely.

I thought it quite a reasonable article. Wine makers are missing out on a potential market.

The issues of encouraging Black winemakers in the Cape are pertinent too. The RSA wine industry has quite a long history of abusive labour practices, most notoriously paying the workers wages substantially in cheap rotgut wine in lieu of cash. This perpetuated a cycle of poverty and alcoholism in their workers.

Good to hear that things are looking up there. South Africans of all races are very friendly and welcoming, except too often to each other.

Nicola just playing politics now saying she may agree to the lifting travel restrictions for the 10th July but needs to consider it in more detail

If she fails to follow England then Scots will just fly out of England's airports at the lost of Scots airports and jobs

She`s always been playing politics. Make sure everyone knows we have our own government by doing differently from what Westminster says just because we can.

    She`s playing with fire.
Wait until the furlough scheme ends, with English businesses back open and Scottish ones still locked down.
You mean wait until the furlough scheme ends with so many English and Scottish businesses gone into liquidation. The end of furlough means the end of pretending that millions of jobs still exist. We're seeing the start of this already with thousands of redundancies every day. Sadly.
By international standards, the U.K. furlough scheme has been one of the best anywhere.

But yes, it does have to come to a close, government can’t afford to keep paying people to stay at home, and sadly for many there won’t be a job for them to go back to. Hospitality sectors are going to be very badly affected, everyone should be encouraged to spend their money at home this summer rather than travel abroad.

My point about Scotland was mostly political - Sturgeon just wants to be different, and bonus points if she can blame “Westminster” for the failings of her own decisions. Right now, she seems more than happy to destroy the whole summer tourist season in Scotland.
You couldn’t make it up: a Tory accuses Nicola Sturgeon of “just playing politics”, and then another Tory eventually confesses that he was... just playing politics.

Hint to the Conservative Party: you really ought to focus on fighting this pandemic in a more competent fashion and leave the childishness to a later date. I confidently predict that my advice will be ignored. Again.

I can explain the likely genesis of this article. It's the Guardian's regular wine writer, a white lady of a certain age (judging by her photo) looking nervously around at the Woke Mania, and thinking, Err, how do I assert my alliance with all these young Maoists, I know I'll do a fairly vapid article which will deliver an extremely Woke headline
I think you're ramping not gaslighting.

That's pretty poor for Labour after months of Boris and Dom completely fucking up in the virus and everything else.
Agreed. I’m beginning to wonder if I (and in fairness many others) have been over-rating Keir Starmer? Compared to Corbyn he’s a superstar, but in absolute terms he’s still pretty mediocre.

That Lib Dem figure of 6 MPs is truly horrific: Baxter predicts them losing all 4 of their Scottish MPs. And yet another SCon wipeout (-6). The only non-SNP MP would be Ian Murray in my “home” constituency of Edinburgh South.
Unlikely in reality - the LDs would hold Orkney & Shetland and - probably - Farron's seat in Cumbria to leave them with 8.
Agreed. Despite fantastic recent polling, I just cannot see Alistair Carmichael* losing Orkney & Shetland. Yes, the SNP have made terrific progress there in recent years, but we still need a 5.4 point swing to gain the seat. We have to fight hard in 59 seats whereas the SLDs will only be focussing on 5, with huge resources poured into the Northern Isles.

We’ll get a better idea when we see the results in the 2 constituencies next May. SLD to SNP Swing needed to gain:

    Orkney 21.6
    Shetland 7.8

If we fail to gain Shetland next year we can forget the Westminster seat.

(*embarrassingly, the former Lib-Con coalition cabinet member was confused for an SNP MP last week by Boris Johnson. He doesn’t even recognise an ally when he sees one.)

    Outdated, yes. Corrupt, no.

Zero evidence that ANY elector since 1789 has been bribed. A few have NOT voted for the candidate who won their state's popular vote, and for whom they were elected to vote. Indeed, there is case from WA State on this currently before SCOTUS - two Clinton electors who did NOT vote for her. Had similar instance in 1976 when WA went for Gerry Ford, and one GOP elector voted for Ronald Reagan.

This article is simultaneously scary yet reassuring

Covid-19 is getting really bad in some American hospitals, BUT they have now developed treatments and protocols which means almost no one needs to die

    ***

But Dr Varon is convinced the real difference is with Maths+.

"No-one needs to die from coronavirus any more," he said.

"This won't cure you of coronavirus but it can stop the build-up of problems which can lead to you needing a ventilator and when that happens, your chances of survival are only about 20%.

"Putting someone on a ventilator is like signing their death warrant.

"Finally, we have an option and I think it's going to work."

They aren't democratically elected. That's the whole point, malc.
Who elected them then, just because they beat the yanks puppet does not mean much. Think we should be investigating our own lots democracy and money laundering rather than pinching more from other people.
You've not heard of corrupt elections?
Yeah, on no less than 5 occasions at US elections, the winner of the popular vote among Americans was prevented from taking office by the corrupt and outdated Electoral Kindergarten!
    Which five elections were those?
1824 - John Quincy Adams over Andrew Johnson (but election decided NOT by Electoral College but rather by US House)

1876 - Rutherford B. Hayes over Samuel Tilden (but election decided by special commission NOT EC) note- Democrats said eventual victor was "Rutherfraud B. Hayes)

1888 - Benjamin Harrison over Grover Cleveland

2000 - George W. Bush over Al Gore

2016 - Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton

Almost crashed the car laughing when I heard the limit on the number of people that should visit one house at this stage in the pandemic was announced as err.. 30.
Implies, almost unbelievably, people had been having larger gatherings than that previously.

I was watching a car crash on TV at 5.00, perhaps it was yours?
The Grand Prix isn’t until Sunday!
    Was this you, FPT ?
...Jonny Wilkinson Drops for World Cup Glory, at 10am in the pub after about eight pints has to be the winner....

I am massively jealous that anyone got to witness such a re-enactment.
What time was it in the UK, as I was there at the time? Sure it started at 8am, and the pubs all opened specially.
    Ah.
I thought you meant you saw the great man himself demonstrate the win, after an early morning session.
LOL, no it was me who had been on a morning session, when I watched Mr Wilkinson on TV kick the greatest drop goal of all time, several times zones ahead!

I’m relieved not to have missed it... but slightly disappointed; it was a magnificent mental image.

Yay! FCO says I can go to Singapore!

    Singapore says no.

As do many of the countries on the list.....

    https://www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-countries-and-territories-exempt-from-advice-against-all-but-essential-international-travel

The ban on departing Australia without permission only applies to Australians - foreigners can leave without permission (providing their home country will have them).

What a bunch of shysters this country has running it, thieving people's money now.
They aren't stealing anything, the UK just doesn't recognise him as the legitimate ruler of Venezuela.
It might make other dodgy dictators less willing to stash their loot in our money laundering system. Good for world governance, and probably less scrupulous bankers...
Indeed. It also appears that various organised crime agencies around the world have had a good few weeks, plenty of international money launderers and drug dealers have been caught out by having to stay in one place for too long.
I think it's more due to the "secure" private communication network the criminal gangs had been using for 4 years being compromised for 3 months before anyone announced the fact.
That was quite hillarious, a bunch of idiots managed a half-arsed effort at an “enctpted phone and messaging system” and convinced thousands of criminals to pay $1500 for them.

In this part of the world, the big takedown was a Nigerian “Propertly Developer” caught with suitcases of cash from running fake bank websites harvesting personal data. He built up a social media following as one of these guys who drives around in Rolls Royces and Ferraris telling everyone how rich he is, and how rich you could be if you invest in his “business”.

He got put on a plane to the US, who plan on not letting him out for a long time

Open invitation to all PBers to attend impromptu weenie roast at the US Embassy; or IF the guards bar the gate, in Grosvenor Sq by the FDR statue.

Tell 'em SeaShanty sent yez! And bring your own fire-crackers!

As added incentive, Casino Royale will read full text of the Declaration of Independence.
