Maybe it was easier having no vote in the people's republic of Bercow after all.

Overview of Notts seats - the blog is historically left-leaning and anti-Soubry, now less so, but after the playful discussion of the ex-BXP candidate this one is more about other seats and quite neutral in flavour.

The week the Tiggers split off the betting had them halfway to government. Clearly they were the wrong Tiggers. (I find it really quite astonishing that they managed to turn all that good press into nothing in about a week)
  • Weirdly, I wonder if the bigger a majority Johnson gets the closer the relationship with the EU he’ll get.

I don’t want to sound all WilliamGlenn (heaven forbid) but not all his candidates are ERG’ers and I suspect he’ll end up wanting to compromise with the EU, and needing a cushion to do so.

On the other hand, if it gets a majority of just 10, he’ll have to genuflect to the Baker’s and Francois’s because the opposition will gang up to vote it down and he’ll need every vote.

But the policy is spot on, investment in youth clubs and similar activities that have been stripped of funding are an essential part of an attempt to reduce youth knife crime. Taking the piss out of how this has been presented shows that someone doesn’t want to see or understand the message.

I doubt it although some recovery in the Lib Dem vote from the last time is surely inevitable. They did astonishingly well to get the seats they did last time out with the total number of votes received. Some of those votes might come from the SNP. On Brexit at least they are fishing in the same pool.
  • SNP drifting in Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk (Con Maj = 11,060)

    Con 1/3
    SNP 11/4

    Lab 100/1

Note: the Liberal Democrats held this seat from the 1960s until 2015. They are now 50/1. Times change.

I didn't do well in 2017 on them, but am doing better this time, substantially green buying Con at 232, selling Lab at 206.

Corbyn's dream of entering Downing Street courtesy of some nightmarish LAB/LD/SNP coalition appear to be disappearing in a puff of dust. Sturgeon would dismantle him atom by atom if such a coalition was ever formed, he knows it, and his party knows it.

Not sure it was a great idea, but nothing like as bad as the photo ops of Boris and Gove from earlier this year, where they pretended to be out jogging. Rule number one is that if you are going to do that do not come sprinting back at a pace you obviously could not sustain and do not run with a style which most resembles the opening credits of the Benny Hill Show.

There's an entire group of women who generally voted Conservative but can be described as Boris sceptic, whilst Corbyn is the alternative Boris Johnson is fine, but I suspect Jo Swinson is playing the long game for the election after next.

Wouldn't be surprised if Boris Johnson also tries to co-opt his own words whilst introducing some female candidate, leaning into his own words to try to defuse the negativity in having said them. It's the kind of thing self-aware joke he goes for.

If she was sparing someone would have been trying to hit her, which would have made for a more enjoyable photo-opp.
Let’s face it, all our politicians are ridiculous and go out of their way to make themselves even more so for our delectation. Willies pigs are pretty hard to beat though.

Yes, I was, you're right. But think about the soft conservatives with feminist stirrings. Boris is not an ideal home for their vote. Sure, Swinson's sweatshirt will probably be offputting to the far-right incel brigade, but they wouldn't vote Lib Dem anyway.

Some of us remember Rod Crosby too.

I wish we still had him now.

He was better than any of us at modelling and predicting elections and got both GE2010 and GE2015 right.
No matter how many times he was warned, he continued in Holocaust denial. Now that is full on anti-semitism, not the much milderstuff that is bandied about in the last few weeks.
Plus he used to slip in Hitler references in occasional posts. I bow to nobody in my admiration of @RodCrosby 's modelling skills and predictive power: he was one of the best we've ever had. But his Hitler idolatry did rather intrude. It's the Matthew Goodwin problem: good analyst, bad advocate.

It is good, although I have grudging admiration for anyone who goes in with pigs. I used to have an opening partner (cricket!) who was a pig farmer. His knees were completely shot by age 40 from large porkers leaning against him. God knows what would have happened to Rennie if that pig had taken a fancy to him instead of the other pig.

Swingback will be a prominent feature of this election, north of the border.

    SCon to SLD swingback.
I doubt it although some recovery in the Lib Dem vote from the last time is surely inevitable. They did astonishingly well to get the seats they did last time out with the total number of votes received. Some of those votes might come from the SNP. On Brexit at least they are fishing in the same pool.
The Lib Dems took Scottish seats even as their vote share fell.

It is now double what it was in 2017, where do you think those voters are coming from given the SNP vote is up?

Kinda ties in with the bollocks to Brexit meme. Juvenile.

Like the "wanker" thing and much else from Johnson - including his original "girly swot" comment.

If you are offended by juvenile antics from party leaders - and I commend you if so - I suggest you give serious consideration to two who do not indulge in them.

    Nicola Sturgeon. Jeremy Corbyn.
There must be something wrong in your workings when your answer is such.

I hadn't realised quite how useless Jon Ashworth actually is. He's being ripped apart by Brillo.

He is a slightly more articulate version of Richard Burgon.

Brillo is taking him to the cleaners.

Any aide who suggested this to Margaret Thatcher would have been looking for a P45 pdq. Jo Swinson might have been better to not do it.

It doesn't even beat Willie Rennie mucking out pigs.

Why is she wearing a “Girly Swot” t-shirt?

Again, without being subtle or funny, it’s just a bit juvenile.

I was told that the Girly Swot jibe comes up an awful lot in focus groups (and not just the ones run by the Tories.)

There's an entire group of women who generally voted Conservative but can be described as Boris sceptic, whilst Corbyn is the alternative Boris Johnson is fine, but I suspect Jo Swinson is playing the long game for the election after next.
She’ll have to given she’s blown this one.
Well it depends on when the next election is, if we do get a hung Parliament, or technical Tory majority that is more observed in the breach than observance then we could have another election in 2020.
Yep. See you all for GE Mar/April 2020.

On the day your leader is making wank jokes at the Leader of Her Majesty's Opposition?
Boris can pull it off, no pun intended. He can make a jibe seem fun and light-hearted.

This just comes across as irritable and passive-aggressive.

    It doesn’t work.
I don't think it works for BoZo. His lack of dignity and gravitas is losing him votes. Churchill was witty, not puerile.
If it is losing him votes that hasn’t shown through yet.
Well, depends where you think he would be without the infantalism.

You gotta remember he's up against a wretchedly incompetent and unpopular Leader Of The Opposition.

I think it is. The BXP is shedding votes, but Con isn't nudging proportionally.

I think Swinson is cutting through in target seats and demographics. That is why LDs are second in the YouGov polls in SE and SW, and EE too.

Sadly most of the labour front bench are equally as good!

    Why not? Tory-lite.

Leaning into the casual sexism from Boris Johnson, co-opting it. It's a confident message. It works for me.
    But, you were already convinced?

    It’s soft Tories she needs.
But the policy she pushes on this issue is right. Not her tee shirt etc etc any better ideas on how to reduce under 18 violent crime?
No-one cares about policies of leaders who don’t convince or cut through.
    More fool you
It’s not about me. I’m describing the behaviour of the electorate.
Casino_Royal speaks for the people. Only s/he really knows the deep currents of the electorate, and the tiny vibrations of hour-to-hour events. We're so lucky to have his/her wisdom.
